    Resolved magnetic structures in the disk-halo interface of NGC 628

    Magnetic fields are essential to fully understand the interstellar medium (ISM) and its role in the disk-halo interface of galaxies is still poorly understood. Star formation is known to expel hot gas vertically into the halo and these outflows have important consequences for mean-field dynamo theory in that they can be efficient in removing magnetic helicity. We perform new observations of the nearby face-on spiral galaxy NGC 628 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at S-band and the Effelsberg 100-m telescope at frequencies of 2.6 GHz and 8.35 GHz. We obtain some of the most sensitive radio continuum images in both total and linearly polarised intensity of any external galaxy observed so far in addition to high-quality images of Faraday depth and polarisation angle from which we obtained evidence for drivers of magnetic turbulence in the disk-halo connection. Such drivers include a superbubble detected via a significant Faraday depth gradient coinciding with a HI hole. We observe an azimuthal periodic pattern in Faraday depth with a pattern wavelength of 3.7±\pm 0.1 kpc, indicating Parker instabilities. The lack of a significant anti-correlation between Faraday depth and magnetic pitch angle indicates that these loops are vertical in nature with little helical twisting, unlike in IC 342. We find that the magnetic pitch angle is systematically larger than the morphological pitch angle of the polarisation arms which gives evidence for the action of a large-scale dynamo where the regular magnetic field is not coupled to the gas flow and obtains a significant radial component. We additionally discover a lone region of ordered magnetic field to the north of the galaxy with a high degree of polarisation and a small pitch angle, a feature that has not been observed in any other galaxy so far and is possibly caused by an asymmetric HI hole.Comment: 25 pages, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Radio haloes in nearby galaxies modelled with 1D cosmic-ray transport using SPINNAKER

    We present radio continuum maps of 12 nearby (D27 MpcD\leq 27~\rm Mpc), edge-on (i76i\geq 76^{\circ}), late-type spiral galaxies mostly at 1.41.4 and 5 GHz, observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, Very Large Array, Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, Effelsberg 100-m and Parkes 64-m telescopes. All galaxies show clear evidence of radio haloes, including the first detection in the Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 55. In 11 galaxies, we find a thin and a thick disc that can be better fitted by exponential rather than Gaussian functions. We fit our SPINNAKER (SPectral INdex Numerical Analysis of K(c)osmic-ray Electron Radio-emission) 1D cosmic-ray transport models to the vertical model profiles of the non-thermal intensity and to the non-thermal radio spectral index in the halo. We simultaneously fit for the advection speed (or diffusion coefficient) and magnetic field scale height. In the thick disc, the magnetic field scale heights range from 2 to 8 kpc with an average across the sample of 3.0±1.7 kpc3.0\pm 1.7~\rm kpc; they show no correlation with either star-formation rate (SFR), SFR surface density (ΣSFR\Sigma_{\rm SFR}) or rotation speed (VrotV_{\rm rot}). The advection speeds range from 100 to 700 kms1700~\rm km\,s^{-1} and display correlations of VSFR0.36±0.06V\propto \rm SFR^{0.36\pm 0.06} and VΣSFR0.39±0.09V\propto \Sigma_{\rm SFR}^{0.39\pm 0.09}; they agree remarkably well with the escape velocities (0.5V/Vesc20.5\leq V/V_{\rm esc}\leq 2), which can be explained by cosmic-ray driven winds. Radio haloes show the presence of disc winds in galaxies with ΣSFR>103 Myr1kpc2\Sigma_{\rm SFR} > 10^{-3}~\rm M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}\,kpc^{-2} that extend over several kpc and are driven by processes related to the distributed star formation in the disc.Comment: 39 pages, 20 colour figures, 10 tables.     In the Interests of clients or commerce? Legal aid, supply, demand, and 'ethical indeterminacy' in criminal defence work

    As a professional, a lawyer's first duty is to serve the client's best interests, before simple monetary gain. In criminal defence work, this duty has been questioned in the debate about the causes of growth in legal aid spending: is it driven by lawyers (suppliers) inducing unnecessary demand for their services or are they merely responding to increased demand? Research reported here found clear evidence of a change in the handling of cases in response to new payment structures, though in ways unexpected by the policy's proponents. The paper develops the concept of 'ethical indeterminacy' as a way of understanding how defence lawyers seek to reconcile the interests of commerce and clients. Ethical indeterminacy suggests that where different courses of action could each be said to benefit the client, the lawyer will tend to advise the client to decide in the lawyer's own interests. Ethical indeterminacy is mediated by a range of competing conceptions of 'quality' and 'need'. The paper goes on to question the very distinction between 'supply' and 'demand' in the provision of legal services

    Structural and Antiferromagnetic Properties of Ba(Fe1−x−yCoxRhy)2As2 compounds

    We present a systematic investigation of the electrical, structural, and antiferromagnetic properties for the series of Ba(Fe1 −x−yCoxRhy)2As2 compounds with fixed x ≈ 0.027 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.035. We compare our results for the Co-Rh doped Ba(Fe1−x−yCoxRhy)2As2 compounds with the Co doped Ba(Fe1−xCox)2As2 compounds. We demonstrate that the electrical, structural, antiferromagnetic, and superconducting properties of the Co-Rh doped compounds are similar to the properties of the Co doped compounds. We find that the overall behaviors of Ba(Fe1−x−yCoxRhy)2As2 and Ba(Fe1−xCox)2As2 compounds are very similar when the total number of extra electrons per Fe/TM (TM=transition metal) site is considered, which is consistent with the rigid band model. Despite the similarity, we find that the details of the transitions, for example, the temperature difference between the structural and antiferromagnetic transition temperatures and the incommensurability of the antiferromangetic peaks, are different between Ba(Fe1−x−yCoxRhy)2As2 and Ba(Fe1−xCox)2As2 compounds

    The PULSE@Parkes project: A new observing technique for long-term pulsar monitoring

    The PULSE@Parkes project has been designed to monitor the rotation of radio pulsars over time spans of days to years. The observations are obtained using the Parkes 64-m and 12-m radio telescopes by Australian and international high school students. These students learn the basis of radio astronomy and undertake small projects with their observations. The data are fully calibrated and obtained with the state-of-the-art pulsar hardware available at Parkes. The final data sets are archived and are currently being used to carry out studies of 1) pulsar glitches, 2) timing noise, 3) pulse profile stability over long time scales and 4) the extreme nulling phenomenon. The data are also included in other projects such as gamma-ray observatory support and for the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project. In this paper we describe the current status of the project and present the first scientific results from the Parkes 12-m radio telescope. We emphasise that this project offers a straightforward means to enthuse high school students and the general public about radio astronomy while obtaining scientifically valuable data sets.Comment: accepted for publication by PAS

    Deep LOFAR observations of the merging galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301

    Previous studies have shown that CIZA J2242.8+5301 (the 'Sausage' cluster, z = 0.192) is a massive merging galaxy cluster that hosts a radio halo and multiple relics. In this paper, we present deep, high-fidelity, low-frequency images made with the LOw-Frequency Array (LOFAR) between 115.5 and 179 MHz. These images, with a noise of 140 μJy beam- 1 and a resolution of θbeam = 7.3 arcsec × 5.3 arcsec, are an order of magnitude more sensitive and five times higher resolution than previous low-frequency images of this cluster. We combined the LOFAR data with the existing Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) (153, 323, 608 MHz) and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) (1.2, 1.4, 1.7, 2.3 GHz) data to study the spectral properties of the radio emission from the cluster. Assuming diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), we found Mach numbers of Mn=2.7{}_{-0.3}^{+0.6} and Ms=1.9_{-0.2}^{+0.3} for the northern and southern shocks. The derived Mach number for the northern shock requires an acceleration efficiency of several percent to accelerate electrons from the thermal pool, which is challenging for DSA. Using the radio data, we characterized the eastern relic as a shock wave propagating outwards with a Mach number of Me=2.4_{-0.3}^{+0.5}, which is in agreement with MeX=2.5{}_{-0.2}^{+0.6} that we derived from Suzaku data. The eastern shock is likely to be associated with the major cluster merger. The radio halo was measured with a flux of 346 ± 64 mJy at 145 MHz. Across the halo, we observed a spectral index that remains approximately constant (α ^{145 MHz-2.3 GHz}_{{across ˜ 1 Mpc}^2}=-1.01± 0.10) after the steepening in the post-shock region of the northern relic. This suggests a generation of post-shock turbulence that re-energies aged electrons

    (un)Doing standards in education with actor-network theory

    Recent critiques have drawn important attention to the depoliticized consensus and empty promises embedded in network discourses of educational policy. While acceding this critique, this discussion argues that some forms of network analysis – specifically those adopting actor-network theory (ANT) approaches - actually offer useful theoretical resources for policy studies. Drawing from ANT-inspired studies of policy processes associated with educational standards, the article shows the ambivalences and contradictions as well as the possibilities that can be illuminated by ANT analysis of standards as networks. The discussion outlines the diverse network conceptions, considerations and sensibilities afforded by ANT approaches. Then it shows four phenomena that have been highlighted by ANT studies of educational standards: ordering (and rupturing) practice through ‘immutable mobiles’, local universality, tensions among networks of prescription and networks of negotiation, and different co-existing ontological forms of the same standards. The conclusion suggests starting points, drawing from these ANT-inspired network analyses, for examining policy processes associated with educational standards
