Space-time paraproducts for paracontrolled calculus, 3d-PAM and multiplicative Burgers equations
We sharpen in this work the tools of paracontrolled calculus in order to
provide a complete analysis of the parabolic Anderson model equation and
Burgers system with multiplicative noise, in a -dimensional Riemannian
setting, in either bounded or unbounded domains. With that aim in mind, we
introduce a pair of intertwined space-time paraproducts on parabolic H\"older
spaces, with good continuity, that happens to be pivotal and provides one of

Entropic forces generated by grafted semiflexible polymers
The entropic force exerted by the Brownian fluctuations of a grafted
semiflexible polymer upon a rigid smooth wall are calculated both analytically
and by Monte Carlo simulations. Such forces are thought to play an important
role for several cellular phenomena, in particular, the physics of
actin-polymerization-driven cell motility and movement of bacteria like
Listeria. In the stiff limit, where the persistence length of the polymer is
larger than its contour length, we find that the entropic force shows scaling
behavior. We identify the characteristic length scales and the explicit form of
the scaling functions. In certain asymptotic regimes we give simple analytical
expressions which describe the full results to a very high numerical accuracy.
Depending on the constraints imposed on the transverse fluctuations of the
filament there are characteristic differences in the functional form of the
entropic forces; in a two-dimensional geometry the entropic force exhibits a

Pair distribution function and structure factor of spherical particles
The availability of neutron spallation-source instruments that provide total
scattering powder diffraction has led to an increased application of real-space
structure analysis using the pair distribution function. Currently, the
analytical treatment of finite size effects within pair distribution refinement
procedures is limited. To that end, an envelope function is derived which
transforms the pair distribution function of an infinite solid into that of a
spherical particle with the same crystal structure. Distributions of particle
sizes are then considered, and the associated envelope function is used to
predict the particle size distribution of an experimental sample of gold
nanoparticles from its pair distribution function alone. Finally, complementing
the wealth of existing diffraction analysis, the peak broadening for the
structure factor of spherical particles, expressed as a convolution derived
from the envelope functions, is calculated exactly for all particle size
distributions considered, and peak maxima, offsets, and asymmetries are

Does continuous renal replacement therapy favourably influence the outcome of the patients?
Continuous haemodialysis and continuous haemofiltration are efficient and safe techniques for the treatment of acute renal failure. Theoretical advantages are improved haemodynamic stability and easier fluid removal. All 15 available studies comparing intermittent (522 patients) with continuous (651 patients) renal replacement therapy have been reviewed. From these studies it cannot be established, whether the use of a continuous instead of an intermittent treatment modality improves the outcome in patients with acute renal failure. Reviewing all 67 published studies dealing with continuous renal replacement therapy revealed a trend to a decreasing mortality rate (P<0.08) over the last 11 years, whereas the mean age and the severity of illness of the patients, measured by the APACHE II score, did not change. In order to establish whether the quality of treatment has improved as a function of time, two quality factors (QF) were created, i.e. QF for age (mean age/mean mortality rate of the patients treated) and QF for severity of diseases (mean APACHE II/mean mortality rate). Both QF improved from 1984 until 1994, when analyzed for continuous (P<0.001) or intermittent (P<0.001) treatment modality. Thus the quality of treatment of patients with acute renal failure improved during the last decade. Warped Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter
Warped compactifications of type IIB string theory contain natural dark
matter candidates: Kaluza-Klein modes along approximate isometry directions of
long warped throats. These isometries are broken by the full compactification,
including moduli stabilization; we present a thorough survey of Kaluza-Klein
mode decay rates into light supergravity modes and Standard Model particles. We
find that these dark matter candidates typically have lifetimes longer than the
age of the universe. Interestingly, some choices for embedding the Standard
Model in the compactification lead to decay rates large enough to be observed,
so this dark matter sector may provide constraints on the parameter space of

One-Bead Microrheology with Rotating Particles
We lay the theoretical basis for one-bead microrheology with rotating
particles, i.e, a method where colloids are used to probe the mechanical
properties of viscoelastic media. Based on a two-fluid model, we calculate the
compliance and discuss it for two cases. We first assume that the elastic and
fluid component exhibit both stick boundary conditions at the particle surface.
Then, the compliance fulfills a generalized Stokes law with a complex shear
modulus whose validity is only limited by inertial effects, in contrast to
translational motion. Secondly, we find that the validity of the Stokes regime

Dual-Frequency VSOP Observations of AO 0235+164
AO 0235+164 is a very compact, flat spectrum radio source identified as a BL
Lac object at a redshift of z=0.94. It is one of the most violently variable
extragalactic objects at both optical and radio wavelengths. The radio
structure of the source revealed by various ground-based VLBI observations is
dominated by a nearly unresolved compact component at almost all available
frequencies.
Dual-frequency space VLBI observations of AO 0235+164 were made with the VSOP
mission in January-February 1999. The array of the Japanese HALCA satellite and
co-observing ground radio telescopes in Australia, Japan, China and South
Africa allowed us to study AO 0235+164 with an unprecedented angular resolution
at frequencies of 1.6 and 5 GHz. We report on the sub-milliarcsecond structural
properties of the source. The 5-GHz observations led to an estimate of T_B >
5.8 x 10^{13} K for the rest-frame brightness temperature of the core, which is
