Arm cavity resonant sideband control for laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors
We present a new optical control scheme for a laser interferometric gravitational wave detector that has a high degree of tolerance to interferometer spatial distortions and noise on the input light. The scheme involves resonating the rf sidebands in an interferometer arm cavity
Network sensitivity to geographical configuration
Gravitational wave astronomy will require the coordinated analysis of data
from the global network of gravitational wave observatories. Questions of how
to optimally configure the global network arise in this context. We have
elsewhere proposed a formalism which is employed here to compare different
configurations of the network, using both the coincident network analysis
method and the coherent network analysis method. We have constructed a network
model to compute a figure-of-merit based on the detection rate for a population
of standard-candle binary inspirals. We find that this measure of network
quality is very sensitive to the geographic location of component detectors
under a coincident network analysis, but comparatively insensitive under a
coherent network analysis.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for proceedings of the 4th Edoardo

Pump-probe differencing technique for cavity-enhanced, noise-canceling saturation laser spectroscopy
We present an experimental technique enabling mechanical-noise free,
cavity-enhanced frequency measurements of an atomic transition and its
hyperfine structure. We employ the 532nm frequency doubled output from a Nd:YAG
laser and an iodine vapour cell. The cell is placed in a traveling-wave
Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with counter-propagating pump and probe beams.
The FPI is locked using the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique. Mechanical noise
is rejected by differencing pump and probe signals. In addition, this
differenced error signal gives a sensitive measure of differential
non-linearity within the FPI.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Optics Letter

Paper-based electroanalytical devices for accessible diagnostic testing
Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) use the passive capillary-driven flow of aqueous solutions through patterned paper channels to transport a sample fluid into distinct detection zones that contain the reagents for a chemical assay. These devices are simple, affordable, portable, and disposable; they are, thus, well suited for diagnostic applications in resource-limited environments. Adding screen-printed electrodes to the detection zones of a μPAD yields a device capable of performing electrochemical assays (an EμPAD). Electrochemical detection has the advantage over colorimetric detection that it is not affected by interferences from the color of the sample, and can be quantified with simple electronics. The accessibility of EμPADs is, however, limited by the requirement for an external potentiostat to power and interpret the electrochemical measurement. New developments in paper-based electronics may help loosen some of this requirement. This review discusses the current capabilities and limitations of EμPADs and paper-based electronics, and sketches the ways in which these technologies can be combined to provide new devices for diagnostic testing.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
Is Entrepreneurial Success Predictable? An Ex-Ante Analysis of the Character-Based Approach
This paper empirically analyzes whether the character-based approach, which focuses on the personality structure and the human capital of business founders, allows prediction of entrepreneurial success. A unique data set is used consisting of 414 persons whose personal characteristics were analyzed by different methods, namely an one-day assessment center (AC) and a standardized questionnaire, before they launched their business. Results are partly unexpected and weaker than previous ex-post findings: first, we found correlations between the AC data and the questionnaire in one subgroup only. Second, the predictive power of the AC data is slightly better than that of the questionnaire, but lower than expected in theory. Interestingly, for those subgroups where the AC data have low predictive power, the questionnaire does better. Third, when success is measured in terms of employees hired, the character-based approach is a poor predictor. Copyright 2008 The Authors.
The ACIGA Data Analysis programme
The Data Analysis programme of the Australian Consortium for Interferometric
Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA) was set up in 1998 by the first author to
complement the then existing ACIGA programmes working on suspension systems,
lasers and optics, and detector configurations. The ACIGA Data Analysis
programme continues to contribute significantly in the field; we present an
overview of our activities.Comment: 10 pages, 0 figures, accepted, Classical and Quantum Gravity,

Atom lithography using MRI-type feature placement
We demonstrate the use of frequency-encoded light masks in neutral atom
lithography. We demonstrate that multiple features can be patterned across a
monotonic potential gradient. Features as narrow as 0.9 microns are fabricated
on silicon substrates with a metastable argon beam. Internal state manipulation
with such a mask enables continuously adjustable feature positions and feature
densities not limited by the optical wavelength, unlike previous light masks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Causal interventions expose implicit situation models for commonsense language understanding
Accounts of human language processing have long appealed to implicit
``situation models'' that enrich comprehension with relevant but unstated world
knowledge. Here, we apply causal intervention techniques to recent transformer
models to analyze performance on the Winograd Schema Challenge (WSC), where a
single context cue shifts interpretation of an ambiguous pronoun. We identify a
relatively small circuit of attention heads that are responsible for
propagating information from the context word that guides which of the
candidate noun phrases the pronoun ultimately attends to. We then compare how
this circuit behaves in a closely matched ``syntactic'' control where the
situation model is not strictly necessary. These analyses suggest distinct
pathways through which implicit situation models are constructed to guide
pronoun resolution.Comment: Findings of AC
Bod1, a novel kinetochore protein required for chromosome biorientation
We have combined the proteomic analysis of Xenopus laevis in vitro–assembled chromosomes with RNA interference and live cell imaging in HeLa cells to identify novel factors required for proper chromosome segregation. The first of these is Bod1, a protein conserved throughout metazoans that associates with a large macromolecular complex and localizes with kinetochores and spindle poles during mitosis. Small interfering RNA depletion of Bod1 in HeLa cells produces elongated mitotic spindles with severe biorientation defects. Bod1-depleted cells form syntelic attachments that can oscillate and generate enough force to separate sister kinetochores, suggesting that microtubule–kinetochore interactions were intact. Releasing Bod1-depleted cells from a monastrol block increases the frequency of syntelic attachments and the number of cells displaying biorientation defects. Bod1 depletion does not affect the activity or localization of Aurora B but does cause mislocalization of the microtubule depolymerase mitotic centromere- associated kinesin and prevents its efficient phosphorylation by Aurora B. Therefore, Bod1 is a novel kinetochore protein that is required for the detection or resolution of syntelic attachments in mitotic spindles
A multichannel feature-based approach for longitudinal lung CT registration in the presence of radiation induced lung damage
Quantifying parenchymal tissue changes in the lungs is imperative in furthering the study of radiation-induced lung damage (RILD). Registering lung images from different time-points is a key step of this process. Traditional intensity-based registration approaches fail this task due to the considerable anatomical changes that occur between timepoints. This work proposes a novel method to successfully register longitudinal pre- and post-radiotherapy (RT) lung CT scans that exhibit large changes due to RILD, by extracting consistent anatomical features from CT (lung boundaries, main airways, vessels) and using these features to optimise the registrations. Pre-RT and 12-month post-RT CT pairs from fifteen lung cancer patients were used for this study, all with varying degrees of RILD, ranging from mild parenchymal change to extensive consolidation and collapse. For each CT, signed distance transforms from segmentations of the lungs and main airways were generated, and the Frangi vesselness map was calculated. These were concatenated into multi-channel images and diffeomorphic multichannel registration was performed for each image pair using NiftyReg. Traditional intensity-based registrations were also performed for comparison purposes. For the evaluation, the pre- and post-registration landmark distance was calculated for all patients, using an average of 44 manually identified landmark pairs per patient. The mean (standard deviation) distance for all datasets decreased from 15.95 (8.09) mm pre-registration to 4.56 (5.70) mm post-registration, compared to 7.90 (8.97) mm for the intensity-based registrations. Qualitative improvements in image alignment were observed for all patient datasets. For four representative subjects, registrations were performed for 3 additional follow-up timepoints up to 48-months post-RT and similar accuracy was achieved. We have demonstrated that our novel multichannel registration method can successfully align longitudinal scans from RILD patients in the presence of large anatomical changes such as consolidation and atelectasis, outperforming the traditional registration approach both quantitatively and through thorough visual inspection
