Can a strongly interacting Higgs boson rescue SU(5)?
Renormalization group analyses show that the three running gauge coupling
constants of the Standard Model do not become equal at any energy scale. These
analyses have not included any effects of the Higgs boson's self-interaction.

Use of thermal inertia determined by HCMM to predict nocturnal cold prone areas in Florida
The HCMM transparency scenes for the available winter of 1978-1979 were evaluated; scenes were identified on processed magnetic tapes; other remote sensing information was identified; and a soil heat flux model with variable-depth thermal profile was developed. The Image 100 system was used to compare HCMM and GOES transparent images of surface thermal patterns. Excellent correspondence of patterns was found, with HCMM giving the greater resolution. One image shows details of thermal patterns in Florida that are attributable to difference in near surface water contents. The wide range of surface temperatures attributable to surface thermal inertia that exist in the relatively flat Florida topography is demonstrated
Use of thermal inertia determined by HCMM to predict nocturnal cold prone areas in Florida
Transparencies, prints, and computer compatible tapes of temperature differential and thermal inertia for the winter of 1978 to 1979 were obtained. Thermal inertial differences in the South Florida depicted include: drained organic soils of the Everglades agricultural area, undrained organic soils of the managed water conservation areas of the South Florida water management district, the urbanized area around Miami, Lake Okeechobee, and the mineral soil west of the Everglades agricultural area. The range of wetlands and uplands conditions within the Suwanee River basin was also identified. It is shown that the combination of wetlands uplands surface features of Florida yield a wide range of surface temperatures related to wetness of the surface features
Use of thermal inertia determined by HCMM to predict nocturnal cold prone areas in Florida
Surface temperatures derived from HCMM data were compared with to those obtained by GOES satellite and the apparent thermal inertia (ATI) calculated. For two dates, the HCMM temperatures appear to be about 5 C lower than the GOES temperatures. The ATI for excessively-drained to well-drained mineral soils was greater than for drained organic soils possibly because of long periods of low rainfall during late 1980 and early 1981. Organic soils cropped to sugar cane showed lower ATI after a severe killing freeze. With dead leaves, there was less transpiration and more solar radiation probably reached the dark soil surface. This would explain the larger diurnal temperature amplitude observed
A Tale of Two Theories: Quantum Griffiths Effects in Metallic Systems
We show that two apparently contradictory theories on the existence of
Griffiths-McCoy singularities in magnetic metallic systems [1,2] are in fact
mathematically equivalent. We discuss the generic phase diagram of the problem
and show that there is a non-universal crossover temperature range T* < T < W
where power law behavior (Griffiths-McCoy behavior) is expect. For T<T* power
law behavior ceases to exist due to the destruction of quantum effects
generated by the dissipation in the metallic environment. We show that T* is an
analogue of the Kondo temperature and is controlled by non-universal couplings.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Experimental criteria for steering and the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox
We formally link the concept of steering (a concept created by Schrodinger
but only recently formalised by Wiseman, Jones and Doherty [Phys. Rev. Lett.
98, 140402 (2007)] and the criteria for demonstrations of
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox introduced by Reid [Phys. Rev. A, 40, 913
(1989)]. We develop a general theory of experimental EPR-steering criteria,
derive a number of criteria applicable to discrete as well as
continuous-variables observables, and study their efficacy in detecting that
form of nonlocality in some classes of quantum states. We show that previous
versions of EPR-type criteria can be rederived within this formalism, thus
unifying these efforts from a modern quantum-information perspective and
clarifying their conceptual and formal origin. The theory follows in close
analogy with criteria for other forms of quantum nonlocality (Bell-nonlocality,
entanglement), and because it is a hybrid of those two, it may lead to insights
into the relationship between the different forms of nonlocality and the

Modulation of endoglin expression in islets of langerhans by VEGF reveals a novel regulator of islet endothelial cell function
BACKGROUND: Endoglin/CD105 is an auxiliary receptor for transforming growth factor-β with established roles in vascular remodelling. It has recently been shown that heterozygous endoglin deficiency in mice decreases insulin secretion in an animal model of obesity, highlighting a potential role for endoglin in the regulation of islet function. We have previously identified two different populations of endoglin expressing cells in human and mouse islets which are: (i) endothelial cells (ECs) and (ii) islet mesenchymal stromal cells. The contribution of islet EC endoglin expression to islet development and sensitivity to VEGF is unknown and is the focus of this study. RESULTS: In vitro culture of mouse islets with VEGF164 for 48 h increased endoglin mRNA levels above untreated controls but VEGF did not modulate VEGFR2, CD31 or CD34 mRNA expression or islet viability. Removal of EC-endoglin expression in vivo reduced islet EC area but had no apparent effect on islet size or architecture. CONCLUSION: EC-specific endoglin expression in islets is sensitive to VEGF and plays partial roles in driving islet vascular development, however such regulation appears to be distinct to mechanisms required to modulate islet viability and size
