Active Learning with Statistical Models
For many types of machine learning algorithms, one can compute the
statistically `optimal' way to select training data. In this paper, we review
how optimal data selection techniques have been used with feedforward neural
networks. We then show how the same principles may be used to select data for
two alternative, statistically-based learning architectures: mixtures of
Gaussians and locally weighted regression. While the techniques for neural
networks are computationally expensive and approximate, the techniques for
mixtures of Gaussians and locally weighted regression are both efficient and
accurate. Empirically, we observe that the optimality criterion sharply
decreases the number of training examples the learner needs in order to achieve

An astronomical search for evidence of new physics: Limits on gravity-induced birefringence from the magnetic white dwarf RE J0317-853
The coupling of the electromagnetic field directly with gravitational gauge
fields leads to new physical effects that can be tested using astronomical
data. Here we consider a particular case for closer scrutiny, a specific
nonminimal coupling of torsion to electromagnetism, which enters into a
metric-affine geometry of space-time. We show that under the assumption of this
nonminimal coupling, spacetime is birefringent in the presence of such a
gravitational field. This leads to the depolarization of light emitted from
extended astrophysical sources. We use polarimetric data of the magnetic white
dwarf to set strong constraints on the essential coupling
constant for this effect, giving k^2 \lsim (19 {m})^2 .Comment: Statements about Moffat's NGT modified. Accepted for publication in

Numerical study of the hard-core Bose-Hubbard Model on an Infinite Square Lattice
We present a study of the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model at zero temperature on
an infinite square lattice using the infinite Projected Entangled Pair State
algorithm [Jordan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 250602 (2008)]. Throughout the
whole phase diagram our values for the ground state energy, particle density
and condensate fraction accurately reproduce those previously obtained by other
methods. We also explore ground state entanglement, compute two-point
correlators and conduct a fidelity-based analysis of the phase diagram.
Furthermore, for illustrative purposes we simulate the response of the system
when a perturbation is suddenly added to the Hamiltonian.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Sex differences in exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue in endurance-trained athletes
There is evidence that female athletes may be more susceptible to exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia and expiratory flow limitation and have greater increases in operational lung volumes during exercise relative to men. These pulmonary limitations may ultimately lead to greater levels of diaphragmatic fatigue in women. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to determine whether there are sex differences in the prevalence and severity of exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue in 38 healthy endurance-trained men (n = 19; maximal aerobic capacity = 64.0 ± 1.9 ml·kg–1·min–1) and women (n = 19; maximal aerobic capacity = 57.1 ± 1.5 ml·kg–1·min–1). Transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) was calculated as the difference between gastric and esophageal pressures. Inspiratory pressure-time products of the diaphragm and esophagus were calculated as the product of breathing frequency and the Pdi and esophageal pressure time integrals, respectively. Cervical magnetic stimulation was used to measure potentiated Pdi twitches (Pdi,tw) before and 10, 30, and 60 min after a constant-load cycling test performed at 90% of peak work rate until exhaustion. Diaphragm fatigue was considered present if there was a 15% reduction in Pdi,tw after exercise. Diaphragm fatigue occurred in 11 of 19 men (58%) and 8 of 19 women (42%). The percent drop in Pdi,tw at 10, 30, and 60 min after exercise in men (n = 11) was 30.6 ± 2.3, 20.7 ± 3.2, and 13.3 ± 4.5%, respectively, whereas results in women (n = 8) were 21.0 ± 2.1, 11.6 ± 2.9, and 9.7 ± 4.2%, respectively, with sex differences occurring at 10 and 30 min (P < 0.05). Men continued to have a reduced contribution of the diaphragm to total inspiratory force output (pressure-time product of the diaphragm/pressure-time product of the esophagus) during exercise, whereas diaphragmatic contribution in women changed very little over time. The findings from this study point to a female diaphragm that is more resistant to fatigue relative to their male counterparts

Less government intervention in biodiversity management: risks and opportunities
n a changing global environment, with increasing pressure on ecosystem goods and services, biodiversity conservation is likely to become increasingly important. However, with the current global financial crisis, governments are increasingly trying to stabilise economies through spending cuts aiming to reduce national deficits. Within such an economic climate, the devolution of governance through public participation is an intrinsically appealing concept. We outline a number of challenges that explain why increased participation in biodiversity management has been and may continue to be problematic. Using as a case study the local stakeholder-driven Moray Firth Seal Management Plan in Scotland, we identify four key conditions that were crucial to the successful participatory management of a biodiversity conflict: a local champion, the emergence of a crisis point, the involvement of decision-makers, and long-term financial and institutional support. Three of the four conditions point to the role of direct government involvement, highlighting the risk of devolving responsibility for biodiversity conflict management to local communities. We argue that without an informed debate, the move towards a more participatory approach could pose a danger to hard-won policy gains in relation to public participation, biodiversity conservation and conflict management
A periodically active pulsar giving insight into magnetospheric physics
PSR B1931+24 (J1933+2421) behaves as an ordinary isolated radio pulsar during
active phases that are 5-10 days long. However, the radio emission switches off
in less than 10 seconds and remains undetectable for the next 25-35 days, then
it switches on again. This pattern repeats quasi-periodically. The origin of
this behaviour is unclear. Even more remarkably, the pulsar rotation slows down
50% faster when it is on than when it is off. This indicates a massive increase
in magnetospheric currents when the pulsar switches on, proving that pulsar
wind plays a substantial role in pulsar spin-down. This allows us, for the
first time, to estimate the currents in a pulsar magnetospheric during the

Phase-resolved HST/STIS spectroscopy of the exposed white dwarf in the high-field polar AR UMa
Phase-resolved HST/STIS ultraviolet spectroscopy of the high-field polar AR
UMa confirms that the WD photospheric Ly alpha Zeeman features are formed in a
magnetic field of ~200 MG. In addition to the Ly alpha pi and sigma+
components, we detect the forbidden hydrogen 1s0->2s0 transition, which becomes
``enabled'' in the presence of both strong magnetic and electric fields. Our
attempt in fitting the overall optical+UV low state spectrum with single
temperature magnetic WD models remains rather unsatisfactory, indicating either
a shortcoming in the present models or a new physical process acting in AR UMa.
As a result, our estimate of the WD temperature remains somewhat uncertain,
Twd=20000+-5000K. We detect a broad emission bump centered at ~1445A and
present throughout the entire binary orbit, and a second bump near ~1650A,
which appears only near the inferior conjunction of the secondary star. These
are suggestive of low harmonic cyclotron emission produced by low-level
(M-dot~1e-13 Msun/yr) accretion onto both magnetic poles. However, there is no
evidence in the power spectrum of light variations for accretion in gas blobs.
The observed Ly alpha emission line shows a strong phase dependence with
maximum flux and redshift near orbital phase phi~0.3, strongly indicating an
origin on the trailing hemisphere of the secondary star. An additional Ly alpha
absorption feature with similar phasing as the Ly alpha emission, but a
\~700km/s blueshift could tentatively be ascribed to absorption of WD emission
in a moderately fast wind. We derive a column density of neutral hydrogen of

Inside the Adventure: A Case Study on the Immersive Engagement Practices at Universal Studios Hollywood
The success of theme parks relies heavily on immersion and identification of the elements that create such immersion to further enhance it. Universal Studios Hollywood utilizes many engagement tactics to immerse their guests in the worlds of their park. The purpose of this study was to analyze guest engagement through themed, immersive experiences and touchpoints at Universal Studios Hollywood. A case study was conducted on Universal Studios Hollywood to analyze what immersive engagement tactics were utilized as well as their effectiveness. The results of this study determined that the park very effectively engages guests through themed experiences with its newer attractions and lacks some key immersive engagement strategies in its older attractions. The researcher recommends that Universal Studios should work to update older attractions to raise them to the caliber of their top-tier attractions, focusing on storytelling and reduction of negative cues
