Far Ultraviolet Fluorescence of Molecular Hydrogen in IC 63
We present observations of H_2 fluorescence at wavelengths between 1000 and
1200 A from the bright reflection nebula IC 63. Observations were performed
with the Berkeley spectrograph on the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission. To the best of
our knowledge, this is the first detection of astrophysical H_2 fluorescent
emission at these wavelengths (excluding planetary atmospheres). The shape of
the spectrum is well described by the model of Sternberg (1989). The absolute
intensity, however, is fainter than an extrapolation from observations at
longer ultraviolet wavelengths (Witt et al. 1989) by a factor of ten. Of the
mechanisms that might help reconcile these observations, optical depth effects
in the fluorescing H_2 itself are the most promising (or at least the most

Contemplating workplace change: evolving individual thought processes and emergent story lines
Drawing on topical life histories of physicians in a particularly volatile public health
sector environment, we build theory around the contemplation of workplace change.
Overall, our study provides evidence as to why single or multiple independent factors,
such as pay or job structure, may fail to predict or explain individual decisions to stay
in or change workplaces. Instead, the contemplation process we argue is a complex,
evolutionary, and context-dependent one that requires individualized interventions.
Our findings reveal the prevalence of episodic context-self fit assessments prompted
by triggering stimuli, two mechanisms by which thought processes evolved
(reinforcement and recalibration), and four characteristic story lines that explain
why the thought processes manifested as they did (exploring opportunities, solving
problems, reconciling incongruence, and escaping situations). Based on our findings,
we encourage practitioners to regularly engage in story-listening and dialogic
conversations to better understand, and potentially affect the evolving socially
constructed realities of staff members

Molecular Lines as Diagnostics of High Redshift Objects
Models are presented for CO rotational line emission by high redshift
starburst galaxies. The influence of the cosmic microwave background on the
thermal balance and the level populations of atomic and molecular species is
explicitly included. Predictions are made for the observability of starburst
galaxies through line and continuum emission between z=5 and z=30. It is found
that the Millimeter Array could detect a starburst galaxy with ~10^5 Orion
regions, corresponding to a star formation rate of about 30 Mo yr^{-1}, equally
well at z=5 or z=30 due to the increasing cosmic microwave background
temperature with redshift. Line emission is a potentially more powerful probe

A Monte Carlo study of temperature-programmed desorption spectra with attractive lateral interactions
We present results of a Monte Carlo study of temperature-programmed
desorption in a model system with attractive lateral interactions. It is shown
that even for weak interactions there are large shifts of the peak maximum
temperatures with initial coverage. The system has a transition temperature
below which the desorption has a negative order. An analytical expression for
this temperature is derived. The relation between the model and real systems is

H_2 Absorption and Fluorescence for Gamma Ray Bursts in Molecular Clouds
If a gamma ray burst with strong UV emission occurs in a molecular cloud,
there will be observable consequences resulting from excitation of the
surrounding H2. The UV pulse from the GRB will pump H2 into
vibrationally-excited levels which produce strong absorption at wavelengths <
1650 A. As a result, both the prompt flash and later afterglow will exhibit
strong absorption shortward of 1650 A, with specific spectroscopic features.
Such a cutoff in the emission from GRB 980329 may already have been observed by
Fruchter et al.; if so, GRB 980329 was at redshift 3.0 < z < 4.4 . BVRI
photometry of GRB 990510 could also be explained by H2 absorption if GRB 990510
is at redshift 1.6 < z < 2.3. The fluorescence accompanying the UV pumping of
the H2 will result in UV emission from the GRB which can extend over days or
months, depending on parameters of the ambient medium and beaming of the GRB
flash. The 7.5-13.6 eV fluorescent luminosity is \sim 10^{41.7} erg/s for
standard estimates of the parameters of the GRB and the ambient medium.
Spectroscopy can distinguish this fluorescent emission from other possible

Wigner crystallization in Na(3)Cu(2)O(4) and Na(8)Cu(5)O(10) chain compounds
We report the synthesis of novel edge-sharing chain systems Na(3)Cu(2)O(4)
and Na(8)Cu(5)O(10), which form insulating states with commensurate charge
order. We identify these systems as one-dimensional Wigner lattices, where the
charge order is determined by long-range Coulomb interaction and the number of
holes in the d-shell of Cu. Our interpretation is supported by X-ray structure
data as well as by an analysis of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat
data. Remarkably, due to large second neighbor Cu-Cu hopping, these systems
allow for a distinction between the (classical) Wigner lattice and the 4k_F
charge-density wave of quantum mechanical origin.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The geomorphological setting of some of Scotland's east coast freshwater mills: a comment on Downward and Skinner (2005) ‘Working rivers: the geomorphological legacy...’
Many of the water mills on Scotland's east coast streams, unlike those discussed recently by Downward and Skinner (2005 Area 37 138–47), are found in predominantly bedrock reaches immediately downstream of knickpoints (i.e. bedrock steps). Bedrock knickpoints in the lower reaches of Scottish rivers are a widespread fluvial response to the glacio-isostatic rebound of northern Britain. These steps in the river profile propagate headward over time, but for intervals of a few centuries or so they are sufficiently stable to be exploited for the elevational fall necessary to power the mill wheel. Many of these mills were apparently powered by ‘run-of-the-river’, as are some today that formerly had mill dams. The typical lack of sediment storage along the erosional lower reaches of many Scottish rivers means that failure of mill structures in Scotland will probably have less dramatic geomorphological and management implications than those suggested by Downward and Skinner for southern English rivers
