Long-Range Plasmon Assisted Energy Transfer Between Fluorescent Emitters
We demonstrate plasmon assisted energy transfer between fluorophores located
at distances up to m on the top of a thin silver film. Thanks to the
strong confinement and large propagation length of surface plasmon polaritons,
the range of the energy transfer is almost two orders of magnitude larger than
the values reported in the literature so far. The parameters driving the energy
transfer range are thoroughly characterized and are in very good agreement with

The stakeholder requirements of building systems for coastal low income housing concerning safety and adaptability
Many coastal settlements in humid tropical developing countries face the burdens of risks due to their location as well as due to a rather low quality of housing that does not meet the requirements of sustainability. An important aspect is that the provided building systems for coastal houses in some developing countries (DCs) do not cater for the stakeholder requirement of building safety and adaptability in the coastal area. This paper describes the results on stakeholder requirements and preferences of building systems for determination and adaptation of the performance of low cost housing in HTCCs towards improved sustainability concerning safety and adaptability. Activities and space use for enabling local economy in coastal low income housing : towards a methodologycal approach
Many low income households are supported by Home Based Enterprises (HBE) for their income generation. However, settlements in coastal areas have physical problems related to the corrosive land and climate condition, as well as the possibilities of natural hazards such as flooding (ADB, 2003: UNHABITAT 2003). The rapid growth of cities especially in developing countries (DCs) contributes to social problems, serious burdens for human health and the environment. In order to improve the quality of human life in the coastal cities, some local governments decided to remove some settlements to the inland area such as problems in some big coastal cities in Indonesia. In many cases, many resettlements of housing failed to meet community’s and user’s requirements. To reduce and avoid sustainability problems, it is necessary to have more insight and understanding of the used of space in coastal low income housing. This paper describes user’s activities and methodological approach used in order to determine user’s requirements in coastal low income housing (LIH). Early-onset primary antibody deficiency resembling common variable immunodeficiency challenges the diagnosis of Wiedeman-Steiner and Roifman syndromes
Syndromic primary immunodeficiencies are rare genetic disorders that affect both the immune system and other organ systems. More often, the immune defect is not the major clinical problem and is sometimes only recognized after a diagnosis has been made based on extra-immunological abnormalities. Here, we report two sibling pairs with syndromic primary immunodeficiencies that exceptionally presented with a phenotype resembling early-onset common variable immunodeficiency, while extra-immunological characteristics were not apparent at that time. Additional features not typically associated with common variable immunodeficiency were diagnosed only later, including skeletal and organ anomalies and mild facial dysmorphism. Whole exome sequencing revealed KMT2-Aassociated Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome in one sibling pair and their mother. In the other sibling pair, targeted testing of the known disease gene for Roifman syndrome (RNU4ATAC) provided a definite diagnosis. With this study, we underline the importance of an early-stage and thorough genetic assessment in paediatric patients with a common variable immunodeficiency phenotype, to establish a conclusive diagnosis and guide patient management. In addition, this study extends the mutational and immunophenotypical spectrum of Wiedemann-Steiner and Roifman syndromes and highlights potential directions for future pathophysiological research
The European Commission’s Green Deal is an opportunity to rethink harmful practices of research and innovation policy
The European Union’s Green Deal and associated policies, aspiring to long-term environmental sustainability, now require economic activities to ‘do no significant harm’ to EU environmental objectives. The way the European Commission is enacting the do no significant harm principle relies on quantitative tools that try to identify harm and adjudicate its significance. A reliance on established technical approaches to assessing such questions ignores the high levels of imprecision, ambiguity, and uncertainty—levels often in flux—characterizing the social contexts in which harms emerge. Indeed, harm, and its significance, are relational, not absolute. A better approach would thus be to acknowledge the relational nature of harm and develop broad capabilities to engage and ‘stay with’ the harm. We use the case of European research and innovation activities to expose the relational nature of harm, and explore an alternative and potentially more productive approach that departs from attempts to unilaterally or uniformly claim to know or adjudicate what is or is not significantly harmful. In closing, we outline three ways research and innovation policy-makers might experiment with reconfiguring scientific and technological systems and practices to better address the significant harms borne by people, other-than-human beings, and ecosystems
