Transmission and Reflection of Collective Modes in Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensate
We study tunneling properties of collective excitations in spin-1
Bose-Einstein condensates. In the absence of magnetic fields, the total
transmission in the long wavelength limit occurs in all kinds of excitations
but the quadrupolar spin mode in the ferromagnetic state. The quadrupolar spin
mode alone shows the total reflection. A difference between those excitations
comes from whether the wavefunction of an excitation corresponds to that of the
condensate in the long wavelength limit. The correspondence results in the
total transmission as in the spinless BEC.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Dynamic Structure Factor of Normal Fermi Gas from Collisionless to Hydrodynamic Regime
The dynamic structure factor of a normal Fermi gas is investigated by using
the moment method for the Boltzmann equation. We determine the spectral
function at finite temperatures over the full range of crossover from the
collisionless regime to the hydrodynamic regime. We find that the Brillouin
peak in the dynamic structure factor exhibits a smooth crossover from zero to
first sound as functions of temperature and interaction strength. The dynamic
structure factor obtained using the moment method also exhibits a definite
Rayleigh peak (), which is a characteristic of the hydrodynamic
regime. We compare the dynamic structure factor obtained by the moment method
with that obtained from the hydrodynamic equations.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figure
Towards first-principles understanding of the metal-insulator transition in fluid alkali metals
By treating the electron-ion interaction as perturbation in the
first-principles Hamiltonian, we have calculated the density response functions
of a fluid alkali metal to find an interesting charge instability due to
anomalous electronic density fluctuations occurring at some finite wave vector
{\bi Q} in a dilute fluid phase above the liquid-gas critical point. Since
|{\bi Q}| is smaller than the diameter of the Fermi surface, this instability
necessarily impedes the electric conduction, implying its close relevance to
the metal-insulator transition in fluid alkali metals.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Reflection and Refraction of Bose-condensate Excitations
We investigate the transmission and reflection of Bose-condensate excitations
in the low energy limit across a potential barrier separating two condensates
with different densities. The Bogoliubov excitation in the low energy limit has
the incident angle where the perfect transmission occurs. This condition
corresponds to the Brewster's law for the electromagnetic wave. The total
internal reflection of the Bogoliubov excitation is found to occur at a large
incident angle in the low energy limit. The anomalous tunneling named by Kagan
et al. [Yu. Kagan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 90, 130402 (2003)] can be
understood in terms of the impedance matching. In the case of the normal
incidence, comparison with the results in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids is made.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figure
Properties of global monopoles with an event horizon
We investigate the properties of global monopoles with an event horizon. We
find that there is an unstable circular orbit even if a particle does not have
an angular momentum when the core mass is negative. We also obtain the
asymptotic form of solutions when the event horizon is much larger than the
core radius of the monopole, and discuss if they could be a model of galactic
halos.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Absence of Anomalous Tunneling of Bogoliubov Excitations for Arbitrary Potential Barrier under the Critical Condensate Current
We derive the exact solution of low energy limit of Bogoliubov equations for
excitations of Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of arbitrary potential
barrier and maximum current of condensate. Using this solution, we give the
explicit expression for the transmission coefficient against the potential
barrier, which shows partial transmission in the low energy limit. The
wavefunctions of excitations in the low energy limit do not coincide with that
of the condensate. The absence of the perfect transmission in the critical
current state originates from local enhancement of density fluctuations around
the potential barrier.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
ELISA: a cryocooled 10 GHz oscillator with 10-15 frequency stability
This article reports the design, the breadboarding and the validation of an
ultra-stable Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillator operated in an autonomous
cryocooler. The objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility of
a frequency stability of 3x10-15 between 1 s and 1,000 s for the European Space
Agency deep space stations. This represents the lowest fractional frequency
instability ever achieved with cryocoolers. The preliminary results presented
in this paper validate the design we adopted for the sapphire resonator, the
cold source and the oscillator loop.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
Isovector unpolarized quark distribution in the nucleon in the large-N_c limit
We calculate the isovector (flavor-nonsinglet) unpolarized quark- and
antiquark distributions in the nucleon at a low normalization point in the
large-N_c limit. The nucleon is described as a soliton of the effective chiral
theory. The isovector distribution appears in the next-to-leading order of the
1/N_c-expansion. Numerical results for the quark- and antiquark distributions
compare well with the parametrizations of the data at a low normalization
point. This large-N_c approach gives a flavor asymmetry of the antiquark
distribution (violation of the Gottfried sum rule) in good agreement with the
measurements.Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX, 1 table, 4 figures included using eps
