Adaptronics contribute to the optimal use of products. In particular, 'intelligent' structures can quickly adjust their conduct autonomically to changing operational conditions. The spectrum of areas of application ranges from automobile industry, aviation and astronautics, medical technology up to the micro system technology. Adaptronics build a bridge between the material and system and encompasses the search for multifunctional elements and their integration into a system or structure. All physical technologies as well as chemical and biological technologies are influential areas of technology. Application fields, exemplary projects and research centers involved in adaptronics are presented, and obstacles and deficits in the application related research are discussed. BIONICS as a young scientific discipline deal systematically with the technical transformation and application of constructions, procedures and development principles of biological systems. The spectrum of application for bionic methods extends to almost all technical disciplines and is divided into the areas of construction bionics, procedural bionics, as well as information bionics. As an applied analogical research, bionics require technical biology as a basis to analyze biological systems employing models and methods. The state of art in the field of bionics is described, and exemplary bionic projects are presented. It is concluded that there is a considerable need for action, especially in the transfer of information between research and industrial application. This book contains the five published papers on ''Low temperature deposition of crystalline silicium films for solar cells'' presented at the European Photovoltaic conferences in Montreux (1992), Amsterdam (1994) and Nizza (1995) and published in the conference documentation. Papers presented at the PV-status seminars held by the Juelich Research Centre in 1993 and 1996 are also briefly summarised. They are published in the status reports. Speaking truth to power revisited: science, policy and climate change

Auf Grundlage der Ergebnisse zweier Fragebogenaktionen wird diskutiert, wie sich die Problematik von Klimaveraenderungen aus der Perspektive von Klimaforschern und aus der Perspektive von mit Klimapolitik befassten Entscheidungstraegern darstellt. Die Betonung liegt auf den Verhaeltnissen in Deutschland. Eingeschlossen ist eine Einschaetzung des aktuellen Standes der Klimaforschung durch die Wissenschaftler selbst sowie der Bedeutung, welche von politischen Entscheidungstraegern verschiedenen Informationsquellen beigemessen wird. Es zeigt sich, dass sich politische Entscheidungstraeger auf zahlreiche Informationsquellen verlassen, die nur indirekt die Resultate der Klimaforschung wiedergeben und, dass dieser Personenkreis das Problem der Klimaveraenderungen als draengender ansieht als die Wissenschaftler selbst. (orig.)The issue of climate change from the perspectives of climate change scientists and climate policy makers is discussed using results from two survey questionnaires. Emphasis is given to the German context. Included is the self assessment of the state of the art of the climate sciences and the importance assigned to different sources of information by policy makers. Conclusions indicate that policy makers rely on a number of sources other than the direct results of science, and have assigned a greater sense of urgency to the issue of climate change than have scientists. Wie schaetzt die deutsche Exekutive die Gefahr eines globalen Klimawandels ein? Eine Meinungsumfrage zum Risikomanagement in der Umweltpolitik

Die Warnung vor einer globalen Erwaermung konfrontiert die Politik mit einem Problem, das wissenschaftlich komplex und politisch riskant ist. Die Bewaeltigung derartiger Probleme erfordert ein hohes Mass an Informationsaustausch und Verstaendigung zwischen politischen und wissenschaftlichen Institutionen, um Risikomanagement zu betreiben und Entscheidungen unter Unsicherheit zu treffen. Um ein genaueres Bild davon zu gewinnen, wie die Bedrohung des Klimawandels in der deutschen Politik wahrgenommen und handhabbar gemacht wird, wurde ein wichtiges Segment des deutschen politischen Systems unter die Lupe genommen: Fuehrende Vertreter der Exekutive (Verwaltung), die auf Bundes- und Laenderebene mit Fragen des Umwelt-Natur- und Klimaschutzes befasst sind, wurden zum Thema Klimawandel und Klimaforschung befragt. (orig.)Global warming is a problem which is scientifically complex and risky for political institutions. Coping with this problem requires elaborate methods of information exchange and accommodation between scientific and political institutions in order to facilitate risk management and decisions under uncertainty. This paper explores the relationship between science and politics based on the results of a survey of representatives of the German executive branch (both on the Federal and the Laender level) who are in charged with regulating environmental, nature and climate protection affairs. Results indicate that the top-level administrative staff in Germany perceive climate change as an urgent problem but are undecided whether 'climate research has managed to remain a neutral, value-free science'. Climate change is perceived as an exceptionally complex problem for science which is still faced with numerous knowledge gaps.
