    Does Birth Order Have an Effect on an Individual’s Conscientiousness?

    Looking at familial relationships, specifically between sibling dynamics, has been focused on in many different angles in the field of psychology. Psychologists seek to understand the relationships between siblings, and how the relationships affect their bond, personality, and social life. Past studies have shown that siblings do tend to bounce off of each other, such as older sibling control having more of an effect in conflicts rather than in intimacy (Tucker & Updegraff). We hypothesized that the oldest siblings would clean up after themselves or not make a mess, middle children would clean up after themselves, the youngest would make a mess and leave, and only children would clean up after themselves. The participant sample is 60 introductory to psychology students who participated in this study to receive credit in their courses. The study should only take thirty minutes. They will first be brought into a room and be asked to watch a fifteen minute episode of Spongebob while eating a nature valley granola bar. We are measuring the amount of crumbs left behind by each individual and which sibling they are. Afterward, they will be given a short demographics survey and a questionnaire containing the BFI items, Responsibility Manifesto items, Self-Responsibility scale, and Social Responsibility Scale. Afterwards we will debrief them on the true nature of our study. Results will be presented at SURS

    Carnivore Territoriality: Simulating Economic Selection of Territories

    We are developing theoretical models of territorial behavior of carnivores. This work will be useful for predicting the abundance of wolf (Canis lupus) territories in Montana and Idaho. Coupled with a patch occupancy model, it will provide more accurate estimates of abundance of wolves in each state. Ultimately, our work will also provide a better understanding of territorial behavior of a large carnivore. We are simulating the territory selection process for carnivores choosing patches on a landscape based on benefits of prey, where prey distribution ranges from overdispersed to highly clumped. Simulated carnivores will also consider hypothesized costs of patch ownership, including travel, competition, and mortality risk. In each simulation, carnivores will acquire patches for a territory as economically as possible based on these benefits and costs. Simulating various combinations of these hypothesized benefits and costs of patch ownership will provide predictions of territorial behavior. We can then compare these predictions to the territories of real wolves to determine which model is most predictive of actual wolf behavior. Starting with a model for benefits of prey and costs of travel, we found that prey distribution may influence mean size, quality, and fragmentation of simulated territories. Based on these preliminary results, we might expect differences in size or quality of territories in regions with different prey communities. Most importantly, this work provides a foundation from which we will build more complex models of territorial behavior of carnivores

    Structural features distinguishing infectious ex vivo mammalian prions from non-infectious fibrillar assemblies generated in vitro

    Seeded polymerisation of proteins forming amyloid fibres and their spread in tissues has been implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple neurodegenerative diseases: so called "prion-like" mechanisms. While ex vivo mammalian prions, composed of multichain assemblies of misfolded host-encoded prion protein (PrP), act as lethal infectious agents, PrP amyloid fibrils produced in vitro generally do not. The high-resolution structure of authentic infectious prions and the structural basis of prion strain diversity remain unknown. Here we use cryo-electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to examine the structure of highly infectious PrP rods isolated from mouse brain in comparison to non-infectious recombinant PrP fibrils generated in vitro. Non-infectious recombinant PrP fibrils are 10 nm wide single fibres, with a double helical repeating substructure displaying small variations in adhesive force interactions across their width. In contrast, infectious PrP rods are 20 nm wide and contain two fibres, each with a double helical repeating substructure, separated by a central gap of 8-10 nm in width. This gap contains an irregularly structured material whose adhesive force properties are strikingly different to that of the fibres, suggestive of a distinct composition. The structure of the infectious PrP rods, which cause lethal neurodegeneration, readily differentiates them from all other protein assemblies so far characterised in other neurodegenerative diseases

    Liaison Old Age Psychiatry Service in a Medical Setting: Description of the Newcastle Clinical Service

    Liaison Old Age Psychiatry services (LOAP) have begun to emerge in the UK and further development of the service is supported by the latest health policies. Since qualitative and quantitative studies in this area are lacking, we have undertaken a detailed quantitative prospective review of referrals to the Newcastle LOAP to evaluate the clinical activity of the service. We report high referral rates and turnover for the LOAP service. Reasons for referral are diverse, ranging from requests for level of care and capacity assessments and transfer to other clinical services to management of behaviour, diagnosis, and treatment. We outline the value of a multidisciplinary model of LOAP activity, including the important role of the liaison nursing team, in providing a rapid response, screening, and followup of high number of clinical referrals to the service

    Molecular characterization of adipose tissue in the African elephant (Loxodonta africana)

    Adipose tissue (AT) is a dynamic and flexible organ with regulatory roles in physiological functions including metabolism, reproduction and inflammation; secreted adipokines, including leptin, and fatty acids facilitate many of these roles. The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is experiencing serious challenges to optimal reproduction in captivity. The physiological and molecular basis of this impaired fertility remains unknown. AT production of leptin is a crucial molecular link between nutritional status, adiposity and fertility in many species. We propose that leptin has a similar function in the African elephant. African elephant visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (AT) was obtained from both sexes and a range of ages including females with known pregnancy status. RNA was extracted and histological sections created and analyzed by microarray, PCR and immunohistochemistry respectively. Gas-chromatography was used to determine the fatty acid composition of AT. Microarray expression profiling was used to compare gene expression profiles of AT from pre-pubertal versus reproductively competent adult African elephants. This study demonstrates, for the first time, leptin mRNA and protein expression in African elephant AT. The derived protein sequence of the elephant leptin protein was exploited to determine its relationship within the class I helical cytokine superfamily, which indicates that elephant leptin is most closely related to the leptin orthologs of Oryctolagus cuniculus (European rabbit), Lepus oiostolus (woolly hare), and members of the Ochotonidae (Pika). Immunohistological analysis identified considerable leptin staining within the cytoplasm of adipocytes. Significant differences in fatty acid profiles between pregnant and non-pregnant animals were revealed, most notably a reduction in both linoleic and α linoleic acid in pregnant animals. This report forms the basis for future studies to address the effect of nutrient composition and body condition on reproduction in captive and wild elephants

    Until now, the 3-dimensional structure of infectious mammalian prions and how this differs from non-infectious amyloid fibrils remained unknown. Mammalian prions are hypothesized to be fibrillar or amyloid forms of prion protein (PrP), but structures observed to date have not been definitively correlated with infectivity. One of the major challenges has been the production of highly homogeneous material of demonstrable high specific infectivity to allow direct correlation of particle structure with infectivity. We have recently developed novel methods to obtain exceptionally pure preparations of prions from prion-infected murine brain and have shown that pathogenic PrP in these high-titer preparations is assembled into rod-like assemblies (Wenborn et al. 2015. Sci. Rep. 10062). Our preparations contain very high titres of infectious prions which faithfully transmit prion strain-specific phenotypes when inoculated into mice making them eminently suitable for detailed structural analysis.     Mathematical stories: Why do more boys than girls choose to study mathematics at AS-level in England?

I draw on the findings of a qualitative research study involving interviews with 43 young people all studying mathematics in post-compulsory education in England. Working within a post-structuralist framework, I argue that gender is a project and one that is achieved in interaction with others. Through a detailed reading of Toni and Claudia’s stories I explore the tensions for young women who are engaging in mathematics, something that is discursively inscribed as masculine, while (understandably) being invested in producing themselves as female. I conclude by arguing that seeing ‘doing mathematics’ as ‘doing masculinity’ is a productive way of understanding why mathematics is so male dominated and by looking at the implications of this understanding for gender and mathematics reform work.This work is funded by the ESR
