    Water Supply Planning under Interdependence of Actions: Theory and Application

    An ongoing water supply planning problem in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, is studied to select the best water supply combination, within a multiple-objective framework, when actions are interdependent. The interdependencies in the problem are described and shown to be essential features. The problem is formulated as a multiple-criteria integer program with interdependent actions. Because of the large number of potential actions and the nonconvexity of the decision space, it is quite difficult to find nondominated subsets of actions. Instead, a modified goal programming technique is suggested to identify promising subsets. The appropriateness of this technique is explained, and the lessons learned in applying it to the Waterloo water supply planning problem are described

    Assessment of human errors in driving accidents; Analysis of the causes based on aberrant behaviors

    Introduction: Today, mortalities and injuries due to traffic accidents have been confirmed as a global phenomenon. Meanwhile, mistakes and high risk behaviors by drivers, is the most important intervening factor in traffic accidents. This study is to analyze the causes of traffic accidents according to drivers' aberrant behaviors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 540 taxi drivers using Manchester Driving Behaviour Questinnaire in 0-5 Likert scale. After being gathered, the data were analyzed by SPSS 11.5 using Pearson Correlation and Logistic Regression. Findings: The mean score of aberrant driving behaviors was obtained 2.06 (± 0.47) and lapse obtained the highest score and driving mistakes did the lowest. As age advanced, the rate of aberrant behaviours declined (P = 0.006). Commitment of mistakes and offences was more prevalent in ages under 30 years compared to other age ranges and lapse in the individuals over 50 years was more prevalent compared to other items. The results of logistic regression indicated that all variables of DBQ are important in predicting Iranian drivers' aberrant behaviors (P < 0.001), but intentional offences had the highest correlation. There was an inverse correlation between driving history and intentional offences and mistakes (P < 0.001). Conclusion: According to the results, it could be said that intentional offences and lapse in driving behaviors are more predictive of self-reported accidents compared to other variables. The drivers in low ages are more willing to practice aberrant behaviors due to lack of adequate skill and experience and having intrinsic excitements. By contrast, as age advances, intentional offenses declines and the rate of lapses ascends. It seems that through provision of regular, periodic training for the drivers by occupation and creating awareness, aberrant behaviors and, by extension, traffic accidents could be effectively decreased

    The damping properties of the foam‑filled shaft of primary feathers of the pigeon Columba livia

    The avian feather combines mechanical properties of robustness and flexibility while maintaining a low weight. Under periodic and random dynamic loading, the feathers sustain bending forces and vibrations during flight. Excessive vibrations can increase noise, energy consumption, and negatively impact flight stability. However, damping can alter the system response, and result in increased stability and reduced noise. Although the structure of feathers has already been studied, little is known about their damping properties. In particular, the link between the structure of shafts and their damping is unknown. This study aims at understanding the structure-damping relationship of the shafts. For this purpose, laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) was used to measure the damping properties of the feather shaft in three segments selected from the base, middle, and tip. A combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and micro-computed tomography (μCT) was used to investigate the gradient microstructure of the shaft. The results showed the presence of two fundamental vibration modes, when mechanically excited in the horizontal and vertical directions. It was also found that the base and middle parts of the shaft have higher damping ratios than the tip, which could be attributed to their larger foam cells, higher foam/cortex ratio, and higher percentage of foam. This study provides the first indication of graded damping properties in feathers

    An exploratory cross-cultural study of community-based health literacy interventions to promote the mental well-being of disadvantaged and disabled young Africans: a multi-method approach

    Background: This study explores the impact of community-based health literacy interventions on the health and mental well-being of disadvantaged young Africans in Zambia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and South Africa. The pandemic has exacerbated mental health problems amongst children and young people, underscoring the urgent need for equitable access to mental healthcare resources. Emphasizing the importance of equitable access to mental healthcare resources, the research addresses educational and income disparities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly amongst young Africans with disabilities or vulnerabilities. Methods: The study comprised 1,624 young Africans, of whom 1,592 were surveyed, while 191 later participated in in-depth interviews and focus groups. Additionally, 32 participants exclusively joined focus groups. Participants were recruited to complete the Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (SWEMWBS), WHO-5 Well-being Index, Pandemic Anxiety Scale (PAS), and Self-rating of Happiness, as well as semi-structured interviews or focus groups. Results: The findings highlight the significance of tailored health literacy interventions in addressing mental health challenges and promoting well-being in marginalized African communities. In the sample, 43.1% (686) reported to have at least a physical disability or serious health condition and 51.4% (818) had special educational needs (SENs). Mental health scores were significantly lower in participants with two or more physical disabilities and pre-existing mental health problems. Factors significantly associated with poor mental health included poor health literacy, physical disabilities, and pre-existing mental health problems. Four main themes were generated from the thematic analysis: early childhood trajectories and mental illness experiences; positionality, open communication, and mental illness experience; mental illness experience, emotional honesty, and social stratification; and spirituality, cultural beliefs, and mental illness experience. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the need for context-specific, culturally appropriate health literacy interventions to support the mental health and well-being of young Africans in LMICs. By focusing on the lived experiences of disadvantaged groups, the research contributes to a better understanding of effective strategies for promoting health literacy and addressing health inequalities in African communities during and after health emergencies

    Developing methodology to evaluate the oral sensory features of pharmaceutical tablet coatings

    Acceptability of medicines is critical for effective pharmacotherapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the oral sensory properties of tablet coatings to determine how mouthfeel can improve acceptability. A randomised double-blind study was performed in 84 adult volunteers (51% ≥55 years). Each participant received 4 placebo tablets (3 coated and 1 uncoated) to evaluate (i) ease of swallowing and (ii) palatability. Visual analogue scales (VAS) were used to capture sensory parameters. Acceptability was assessed using the following parameters: ease of swallowing; amount of water taken with the tablet; rank order of preference; roughness; adhesiveness and slipperiness. Ease of swallowing was determined to be the most sensitive measure of acceptance. The best coating was the one that was reported to be the most slippery and smooth. The presence of a coating improved ease of swallowing, mouthfeel and overall palatability. This study demonstrates that slippery coatings improve acceptability of tablets. The study also demonstrates the value of VAS to measure the sensory attributes of coated tablets

    Does the Formulation of Oral Solid Dosage Forms Affect Acceptance and Adherence in Older Patients?:A Mixed Methods Systematic Review

    OBJECTIVES: Age-related changes mean that the older population can encounter barriers toward taking medication orally. Further work is needed to identify the characteristics of oral solid dosage forms that will improve patient acceptance and adherence. The aim of this systematic review was to identify if and how formulation aspects of oral solid dosage forms affect acceptance and adherence in older people. DESIGN: Mixed methods systematic review using a data-based convergent synthesis design. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Articles were selected if they included participants aged 60 years and older, or included health care professionals, social care professionals, and informal carers of patients aged 60 years and older. METHODS: A systematic search of the following databases was undertaken: Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, and The Cochrane Databases. The search of databases was supplemented by a search of gray literature, and reference lists of included papers were manually searched. RESULTS: A total of 16 studies were included in the final synthesis. Three themes were generated from the thematic analysis: (1) dimensions, (2) palatability, and (3) appearance. The dimensions and palatability are often modified to improve swallowability by breaking tablets in half or taste masking with food. Polypharmacy can lead to patients using the appearance to identify tablets; however, this can lead to confusion when products appear similar. No study was identified that explored formulation characteristics across all 3 categories directly in the older population. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Manufacturers should take into account practical problems older people may encounter when considering the dimensions, palatability, and appearance of the final drug product. These characteristics should be optimized to aid visual identification and swallowability. Medical providers and pharmacists have an important role in ensuring that these patient-centric drug products are prescribed and dispensed appropriately so that patients receive the most suitable formulation
