Este trabalho gerou uma carta de declividade e uma carta hipsométrica da Ilha de São Sebastião - SP a partir de três modelos digitais de elevação.     A massless scalar field minimally coupled to the gravitational field in a simplified spherical symmetry is discussed. It is shown that, in this case, the solution found by Roberts, describing a scalar field collapse, is in fact the most general one.     Within- and among-population variation in oviposition preference for urea-supplemented food in Drosophila melanogaster

    Oviposition preference for ureasupplemented food was assayed by simultaneous choice trials on five pairs of closely related laboratory populations of Drosophila melanogaster.Each pair of populations had been derived from a separate ancestral population about 85 generations prior to this study. One population in each pair had been subjected to selection for larval tolerance to the toxic effects of urea; the other population served as a control. Considerable variation in oviposition preference was seen both within and among populations, with four of the ten populations showing a significant mean preference for ureasupplemented food. The degree of specificity shown by individual females was surprisingly high, leading to a bimodal distribution of oviposition preference in some populations. Overall, selection for larval tolerance to urea did not significantly affect oviposition preference. However, the data indicated that pairwise comparisons between randomly selected populations from the two larval selection regimes would lead to a range of possible outcomes, suggesting, in several cases, that selection for larval urea tolerance had led to significant differentiation of adult oviposition preference for urea in one or the other direction. The results, therefore, highlight the importance of population level replication and caution against the practice, common in ecological studies, of assaying oviposition preference in two populations that utilize different hosts in nature, and then drawing broad evolutionary inferences from the results

    An extreme critical space-time: echoing and black-hole perturbations

    A homothetic, static, spherically symmetric solution to the massless Einstein- Klein-Gordon equations is described. There is a curvature singularity which is central, null, bifurcate and marginally trapped. The space-time is therefore extreme in the sense of lying at the threshold between black holes and naked singularities, just avoiding both. A linear perturbation analysis reveals two types of dominant mode. One breaks the continuous self-similarity by periodic terms reminiscent of discrete self-similarity, with echoing period within a few percent of the value observed numerically in near-critical gravitational collapse. The other dominant mode explicitly produces a black hole, white hole, eternally naked singularity or regular dispersal, the latter indicating that the background is critical. The black hole is not static but has constant area, the corresponding mass being linear in the perturbation amplitudes, explicitly determining a unit critical exponent.     On critical behaviour in gravitational collapse

    We give an approach to studying the critical behaviour that has been observed in numerical studies of gravitational collapse. These studies suggest, among other things, that black holes initially form with infinitesimal mass. We show generally how a black hole mass formula can be extracted from a transcendental equation. Using our approach, we give an explicit one parameter set of metrics that are asymptotically flat and describe the collapse of apriori unspecified but physical matter fields.     We present an exact collapsing solution to 2+1 gravity with a negative cosmological constant minimally coupled to a massless scalar field, which exhibits physical properties making it a candidate critical solution. We discuss its global causal structure and its symmetries in relation with those of the corresponding continously self-similar solution derived in the Λ=0\Lambda=0 case. Linear perturbations on this background lead to approximate black hole solutions. The critical exponent is found to be γ=2/5\gamma = 2/5.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures.     Surface gravity in dynamical spherically symmetric spacetimes

    A definition of surface gravity at the apparent horizon of dynamical spherically symmetric spacetimes is proposed. It is based on a unique foliation by ingoing null hypersurfaces. The function parametrizing the hypersurfaces can be interpreted as the phase of a light wave uniformly emitted by some far-away static observer. The definition gives back the accepted value of surface gravity in the static case by virtue of its nonlocal character. Although the definition is motivated by the behavior of outgoing null rays, it turns out that there is a simple connection between the generalized surface gravity, the acceleration of any radially moving observer, and the observed frequency change of the infalling light signal. In particular, this gives a practical and simple method of how any geodesic observer can determine surface gravity by measuring only the redshift of the infalling light wave. The surface gravity can be expressed as an integral of matter field quantities along an ingoing null line, which shows that it is a continuous function along the apparent horizon. A formula for the area change of the apparent horizon is presented, and the possibility of thermodynamical interpretation is discussed. Finally, concrete expressions of surface gravity are given for a number of four-dimensional and two-dimensional dynamical black hole solutions.Comment: 35 pages, revtex, 3 figures included using eps

    Perturbations and Critical Behavior in the Self-Similar Gravitational Collapse of a Massless Scalar Field

    This paper studies the perturbations of the continuously self-similar critical solution of the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field (Roberts solution). The perturbation equations are derived and solved exactly. The perturbation spectrum is found to be not discrete, but occupying continuous region of the complex plane.
