    The vegetation of the habitat of the Brenton blue butterfly, Orachrysops niobe (Trimen), in the Western Cape, South Africa

    The Brenton blue butterfly is known only from a small population in one hectare of asteraceous coastal fynbos at Brenton-on-Sea. This fynbos is characterized by a great diversity of shrubs, herbs and graminoids, with a successional gradient to thicket where Pterocelastrus tricuspidatus is dominant. The eggs of the butterfly are laid on the lower side of the leaves of Indigofera erecta, on which the larvae feed. Fifteen 1-mÂČ quadrats containing plants of Indigofera erecta with and without eggs of the butterfly were distinguished and sampled separately from 15 1-mÂČ quadrats containing plants of Indigofera erecta without eggs. No marked differences in total vegetation, shrub or herb cover between the sites with and without eggs were observed. There was a difference in abundance of the fern Pteridium aquilinum, with over 30% cover at sites with no eggs and only about 6% at sites with eggs present. This could reflect the absence of other plants where the ferns had such dense cover

    Multiple Deprivation, Severity and Latent Sub-Groups:Advantages of Factor Mixture Modelling for Analysing Material Deprivation

    Material deprivation is represented in different forms and manifestations. Two individuals with the same deprivation score (i.e. number of deprivations), for instance, are likely to be unable to afford or access entirely or partially different sets of goods and services, while one individual may fail to purchase clothes and consumer durables and another one may lack access to healthcare and be deprived of adequate housing . As such, the number of possible patterns or combinations of multiple deprivation become increasingly complex for a higher number of indicators. Given this difficulty, there is interest in poverty research in understanding multiple deprivation, as this analysis might lead to the identification of meaningful population sub-groups that could be the subjects of specific policies. This article applies a factor mixture model (FMM) to a real dataset and discusses its conceptual and empirical advantages and disadvantages with respect to other methods that have been used in poverty research . The exercise suggests that FMM is based on more sensible assumptions (i.e. deprivation covary within each class), provides valuable information with which to understand multiple deprivation and is useful to understand severity of deprivation and the additive properties of deprivation indicators

    Genotypic Characterization of Streptococcus canis Isolated from Distinct Hosts with Special Emphasis on Multilocus Sequence Typing

    Background: The animal pathogen Streptococcus canis is increasingly being noticed in human infections. Our aim was to develop a new multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme for Streptococcus canis and to compare isolates recovered from house pets and humans, in order to define the clonal structure of the S. canis population and explore the zoonotic potential of distinct S. canis genetic lineages. Methods: Eighty-five S. canis isolates recovered from infections in animals (n = 78, recovered from 2000 to 2010 in three European countries, mainly from house pets) and humans (n = 7, recovered from 2006 to 2010 in Portugal) were studied. Isolates were identified by API 20 Strep, 23S rRNA gene targeted PCR and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and characterized by MLST, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and emm typing. Results: All isolates were successfully typed with the proposed MLST scheme, indicating its applicability to S. canis from distinct sources. The MLST analysis showed a polyclonal structure of the S. canis population, where the same genetic lineages are found infecting house pets and humans and are disseminated in distinct geographic locations. PFGE confirmed the MLST findings, as it identified the same prevailing lineages and further strengthened the similarity between animal and human isolates. Phylogenetic analysis conducted with the 16S rRNA and MLST loci sequence data indicated that S. canis was a divergent taxon of the sister species Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis, and found evidence of acquisition of genetic material by S. canis from the latter species. The presence of emm-like genes was restricted to a few isolates and correlated with MLST defined genetic lineages. Conclusion: Our data shows that S. canis isolated from house pets and humans are a single population, and demonstrates that isolates belonging to the main genetic lineages identified are able to infect the human host, providing strong evidence for the zoonotic nature of S. canis infection in humans.     Evaluating the Potential Benefits of Metal Ion Doping in SnO2 Negative Electrodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

    Nine different transition metal doped (<10 at%) tin dioxides and undoped SnO2 nanopowders with similar specific surface areas were made using a continuous hydrothermal process and then investigated as potential negative electrode materials for lithium ion batteries. The as-prepared nanopowders were characterized via a range of analytical techniques including powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements. Doped SnO2 materials were grouped into two classes according to the potential redox activity of the dopant (those presumed to be redox inactive: Nb, Ti, Zr; and those presumed to be redox active: Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni). The role of the transition metal ion dopant on the cycling performance (overall capacity and voltage hysteresis), was elucidated for the first cycle via cyclic voltammetry measurements in half cells versus lithium metal. In particular, the authors were able to evaluate whether the initial Coulombic efficiency and the delithiation potential (vs. Li/Li+) of the doped samples, would be likely to offer any increased energy density (compared to undoped SnO2) for lithium ion batteries

    Evaluation of POSSUM scoring system in patients with gastric cancer undergoing D2-gastrectomy

    BACKGROUND: Risk adjustment and stratification play an important role in quality assurance and in clinical research. The Physiological and Operative Severity Score for the enUmeration of Mortality and morbidity (POSSUM) is a patient risk prediction model based on 12 patient characteristics and 6 characteristics of the surgery performed. However, because the POSSUM was developed for quality assessment in general surgical units, its performance within specific subgroups still requires evaluation. The aim of the present study was to assess the accuracy of POSSUM in predicting mortality and morbidity in patients with gastric cancer undergoing D2-gastrectomy. METHODS: 137 patients with gastric cancer undergoing gastrectomy were included in this study. Detailed, standardized risk assessments and thorough documentation of the post-operative courses were performed prospectively, and the POSSUM scores were then calculated. RESULTS: The 30- and 90- day mortality rates were 3.6% (n = 5) and 5.8% (n = 8), respectively. 65.7% (n = 90) of patients had normal postoperative courses without major complications, 14.6% (n = 20) had moderate and 13.9% (n = 19) had severe complications. The number of mortalities predicted by the POSSUM-Mortality Risk Score (R1) was double the actual number of mortalities occurring in the median and high-risk groups, and was more than eight times the actual number of mortalities occurring in the low-risk group (R1 < 20%). However, the calculated R1 predicted rather well in terms of severe morbidity or post-operative death in each risk group: in predicted low risk patients the actual occurrence rate (AR) of severe morbidity or post-operative death was 14%, for predicted medium risk patients the AR was 23%, and for predicted high risk patients the AR was 50% (p < 0.05). The POSSUM-Morbidity Risk Score (R2) overestimated the risk of morbidity. CONCLUSION: The POSSUM Score may be beneficial and can be used for assessment of the peri- and post-operative courses of patients with gastric carcinoma undergoing D2-gastrectomy. However, none of the scores examined here are useful for preoperative prediction of postoperative course

    Transition-Metal-Doped alpha-MnO2 Nanorods as Bifunctional Catalysts for Efficient Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Reactions

    Nano‐sized α‐MnO2 nanorods doped with Co or Ru were directly synthesized using a continuous hydrothermal synthesis process (production rate 10 g h−1) and investigated as relatively inexpensive (due to the small Ru content) bifunctional catalysts for both the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). The materials were extensively characterized using a range of analytical methods; these including Extended X‐Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy measurements, which was accompanied by density functional theory studies, in order to elucidate the role of dopants in α‐MnO2 structure. Electrochemical ORR and OER investigations of the as‐prepared doped α‐MnO2 nanomaterials were compared to more expensive Pt/C or RuO2 catalysts. The doped manganese oxide nanomaterials were used as bifunctional catalysts in the positive electrode of zinc air batteries (with oversized zinc metal negative electrode and limited density of discharge window) and displayed excellent performance (the overpotential was 0.77 and 0.68 V for α‐MnO2 modified with 7.6 at% Co and 9.4 at% Ru, respectively). Overall, as a result of doping, this study achieved improved bifunctional catalytic activities of metal oxide catalysts, which was comparable to more expensive alternatives
