Are the therapeutic strategies in anorexia of ageing effective on nutritional status? A systematic review with meta-analysis
BACKGROUND:
Anorexia of ageing (AA) may be considered as a risk factor for frailty and has an important impact on quality of life, morbidity and mortality.
METHODS:
A systematic review and a meta-analysis were performed to summarise the results from several trials on the effectiveness of treatments in AA, as associated with depression, sensory impairment of taste and smell, decreased appetite or early satiety, and disability. Eligible studies were required to report baseline and follow-up values, the mean change (â-change) from baseline, and/or the mean difference among intervention groups versus control group, concerning food intake (kcal/daily) and/or nutritional outcomes, such as body weight, body mass index, albumin and Mini Nutritional Assessment.
RESULTS:
The systematic review included 20 papers based on different therapeutic approaches concerning food intake and/or nutritional outcomes. The results of the meta-analysis indicate that the interventions for AA have an important impact on body weight [+1.59 kg; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.48-+1.71 kg; P < 0.001) and on energy intake (+56.09 kcal; 95% CI = -54.05 to +166.25 kcal; P = 0.32). Regarding secondary outcomes, it was not possible to meta-analyse the limited amount of data availab le.
CONCLUSIONS:
The different variants of AA need to be defined because diverse therapeutic approaches are available. A more precise definition of the functional impairments associated with AA may allow a more correct decision about the most appropriate therapy to be prescribed. Moreover, this may allow for a more effective performance of the different therapeutic approaches once they are better targeted to the different scenarios of AA
3_D modeling using TLS and GPR techniques to characterize above and below-ground wood distribution in pyroclastic deposits along the Blanco River (Chilean Patagonia)
To date, the study of in-stream wood in rivers has been focused mainly on quantifying wood pieces deposited above
the ground. However, in some particular river systems, the presence of buried dead wood can also represent an
important component of wood recruitment and budgeting dynamics. This is the case of the Blanco River (Southern
Chile) severely affected by the eruption of Chait\ue9n Volcano occurred between 2008 and 2009. The high pyroclastic
sediment deposition and transport affected the channel and the adjacent forest, burying wood logs and standing
trees. The aim of this contribution is to assess the presence and distribution of wood in two study areas (483 m2 and
1989 m2, respectively) located along the lower streambank of the Blanco River, and covered by thick pyroclastic
deposition up to 5 m. The study areas were surveyed using two different devices, a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS)
and a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). The first was used to scan the above surface achieving a high point cloud
density ( 48 2000 points m-2) which allowed us to identify and measure the wood volume. The second, was used
to characterize the internal morphology of the volcanic deposits and to detect the presence and spatial distribution
of buried wood up to a depth of 4 m. Preliminary results have demonstrated differences in the numerousness and
volume of above wood between the two study areas. In the first one, there were 43 wood elements, 33 standing
trees and 10 logs, with a total volume of 2.96 m3 (109.47 m3 km-1), whereas the second one was characterized
by the presence of just 7 standing trees and 11 wood pieces, for a total amount of 0.77 m3 (7.73 m3 km-1). The
dimensions of the wood elements vary greatly according to the typology, standing trees show the higher median
values in diameter and length (0.15 m and 2.91 m, respectively), whereas the wood logs were smaller (0.06 m and
1.12 m, respectively). The low dimensions of deposited wood can be probably connected to their origin, suggesting
that these elements were generated by toppling and breaking of surrounding dead trees. Results obtained with the
GPR confirm the ability of this instrument to localize the presence and distribution of buried wood. From the 3-
D analysis it was possible to assess the spatial distribution and to estimate, as first approach, the volume of the
buried wood which represents approximately 0.04% of the entire volcanic deposit. Further analysis will focus on
additional GPR calibration with different wood sizes for a more accurate estimation of the volume. The knowledge
of the overall wood amount stored in a fluvial system that can be remobilized over time, represent an essential
factor to ensure better forest and river management actions
Circulating SIRT1 inversely correlates with epicardial fat thickness in patients with obesity
Background and aim: Obesity is increasing worldwide and is related to undesirable cardiovascular outcomes. Epicardial fat (EF), the heart visceral fat depot, increases with obesity and correlates with cardiovascular risk. SIRT1, an enzyme regulating metabolic circuits linked with obesity, has a cardioprotective effect and is a predictor of cardiovascular events. We aimed to assess the relationship of EF thickness (EFT) with circulating SIRT1 in patients with obesity.
Methods and results: Sixty-two patients affected by obesity and 23 lean controls were studied. Plasma SIRT1 concentration was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). EFT was measured by echocardiography. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, heart rate (HR), blood pressure, and laboratory findings (fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c, cholesterol, and triglycerides) were assessed. SIRT1 was significantly lower (P = 0.002) and EFT was higher (P < 0.0001) in patients with obesity compared with lean controls. SIRT1 showed a negative correlation with EFT and HR in the obesity group (rho = -0.350, P = 0.005; rho = -0.303, P = 0.008, respectively). After adjustment for obesity-correlated variables, multiple linear regression analysis showed that EFT remained the best correlate of SIRT1 (beta = -0.352, P = 0.016).
Conclusions: Circulating SIRT1 correlates with the visceral fat content of the heart. Serum SIRT1 levels might provide additional information for risk assessment of coronary artery disease in patients with obesity. The population of deformed bands in Cr by emission of Be from the S + Mg reaction
Using particle- coincidences we have studied the population of final
states after the emission of 2 -particles and of Be in nuclei
formed in S+Mg reactions at an energy of . The data were obtained in a setup
consisting of the GASP -ray detection array and the multidetector array
ISIS. Particle identification is obtained from the E and E signals of
the ISIS silicon detector telescopes, the Be being identified by the
instantaneous pile up of the E and E pulses. -ray decays of the
Cr nucleus are identified with coincidences set on 2 -particles
and on Be. Some transitions of the side-band with show
stronger population for Be emission relative to that of 2
-particles (by a factor ). This observation is interpreted as
due to an enhanced emission of Be into a more deformed nucleus.
Calculations based on the extended Hauser-Feshbach compound decay formalism
confirm this observation quantitatively.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures accepted for publication in J. Phys.
Nuclear alpha-clustering, superdeformation, and molecular resonances
Nuclear alpha-clustering has been the subject of intense study since the
advent of heavy-ion accelerators. Looking back for more than 40 years we are
able today to see the connection between quasimolecular resonances in heavy-ion
collisions and extremely deformed states in light nuclei. For example
superdeformed bands have been recently discovered in light N=Z nuclei such as
Ar, Ca, Cr, and Ni by -ray spectroscopy.
The search for strongly deformed shapes in N=Z nuclei is also the domain of
charged-particle spectroscopy, and our experimental group at IReS Strasbourg
has studied a number of these nuclei with the charged particle multidetector
array {\sc Icare} at the {\sc Vivitron} Tandem facility in a systematical
manner. Recently the search for -decays in Mg has been
undertaken in a range of excitation energies where previously nuclear molecular
resonances were found in C+C collisions. The breakup reaction
MgC has been investigated at E(Mg) = 130 MeV, an
energy which corresponds to the appropriate excitation energy in Mg for
which the C+C resonance could be related to the breakup
resonance. Very exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction
Spectrometer in coincidence with {\sc Euroball IV} installed at the {\sc

Microscopic cluster model for the description of new experimental results on the C 13 (O 18, O 16) C 15 two-neutron transfer at 84 MeV incident energy
The C13(O18,O16)C15 reaction is studied at 84 MeV incident energy. Excitation energy spectra and absolute cross-section angular distributions for the strongest transitions are measured with good energy and angular resolutions. Strong selectivity for two-neutron configurations in the states of the residual nucleus is found. The measured cross-section angular distributions are analyzed by exact finite-range coupled reaction channel calculations. The two-particle wave functions are extracted using the extreme cluster and the independent coordinate scheme with shell-model derived coupling strengths. A new approach also is introduced, the microscopic cluster, in which the spectroscopic amplitudes in the center-of-mass reference frame are derived from shell-model calculations using the Moshinsky transformation brackets. This new model is able to describe well the experimental cross section and to highlight cluster configurations in the involved wave functions

Excitation energy spectra and absolute cross-section angular distributions were measured for the 13C(18O,16O)15C two-neutron transfer reaction at 84 MeV incident energy. Exact finite-range coupled reaction channel calculations are used to analyse the data considering both the direct two-neutron transfer and the two-step sequential mechanism. For the direct calculations, two approaches are discussed: The extreme cluster and the newly introduced microscopic cluster. The latter makes use of spectroscopic amplitudes in the centre-of-mass reference frame, derived from shell-model calculations. The results describe well the experimental cross sections
Metabolic syndrome and risk of cancer:a sistematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE - Available evidence supports the emerging hypothesis that metabolic syndrome may be associated with the risk of some common cancers. We did a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association between metabolic syndrome and risk of cancer at different sites. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - We conducted an electronic search for articles published through October 2011 without restrictions and by reviewing reference lists from retrieved articles. Every included study was to report risk estimates with 95% CIs for the association between metabolic syndrome and cancer. RESULTS - We analyzed 116 datasets from 43 articles, including 38,940 cases of cancer. In cohort studies in men, the presence of metabolic syndrome was associated with liver (relative risk 1.43, P < 0.0001), colorectal (1.25, P < 0.001), and bladder cancer (1.10, P = 0.013). In cohort studies in women, the presence of metabolic syndrome was associated with endometrial (1.61, P = 0.001), pancreatic (1.58, P < 0.0001), breast postmenopausal (1.56, P = 0.017), rectal (1.52, P = 0.005), and colorectal (1.34, P = 0.006) cancers. Associations with metabolic syndrome were stronger in women than in men for pancreatic (P = 0.01) and rectal (P = 0.01) cancers. Associations were different between ethnic groups: we recorded stronger associations in Asia populations for liver cancer (P = 0.002), in European populations for colorectal cancer in women (P = 0.004), and in U.S. populations (whites) for prostate cancer (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS - Metabolic syndrome is associated with increased risk of common cancers; for some cancers, the risk differs betweens sexes, populations, and de finitions of metabolic syndrome
Band termination in the N=Z Odd-Odd Nucleus 46V
High spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 46V have been identified. At low
spin, the T=1 isobaric analogue states of 46Ti are established up to I = 6+.
Other high spin states, including the band terminating state, are tentatively
assigned to the same T=1 band. The T=0 band built on the low-lying 3+ isomer is
observed up to the 1f7/2-shell termination at I=15. Both signatures of a
negative parity T=0 band are observed up to the terminating states at I = 16-
and I = 17-, respectively. The structure of this band is interpreted as a
particle-hole excitation from the 1d3/2 shell. Spherical shell model
calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental

Phase transition and stiffer core fluid in neutron stars: Effects on stellar configurations, dynamical stability, and tidal deformability
In this work, we investigate the influence of the phase transition and a
stiffer fluid in neutron stars' cores on the static equilibrium configuration,
dynamical stability, and tidal deformability. For this aim, it is taken into
account that the fluid in the core and the envelope follow the relativistic
polytropic equation of state. We find that the phase transition and a stiffer
fluid in the core will reflect in the total mass, radius, speed of sound, core
radius, radial stability with a slow and rapid conversion at the interface, and
tidal deformability. We also investigate the dimensionless tidal deformability
and for a binary neutron stars system with chirp mass
equal to GW. Finally, we contrast our results with observational data
to show the role that phase transition and a stiffer core fluid could play in
the study of neutron stars.Comment: To appear in EPJ
