    Adiponectin circulating levels and 10-year (2002–2012) cardiovascular disease incidence:the ATTICA Study

    Purpose: Adiponectin is an adipokine with anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular-protective properties. Existing epidemiological evidence is conflicting on the exact relationship between adiponectin and long-term cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Our aim was to prospectively assess whether circulating adiponectin is associated with long-term incident CVD. Methods: A population-based, prospective study in adults (>18 years) without previous CVD history (ATTICA study). Circulating total adiponectin levels were measured at baseline (2001–2002) in a sub-sample (n = 531; women/men: 222/309; age: 40 ± 11 years) of the ATTICA cohort and complete 10-year follow-up data were available in 366 of these participants (women/men: 154/212; age: 40 ± 12 years). Results: After adjusting for multiple factors, including age, sex, body mass index, waist circumference, smoking, physical activity, Mediterranean diet adherence, hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia, our logistic regression analysis indicates that an increase in circulating total adiponectin levels by 1 unit was associated with 36% lower CVD risk (relative risk [RR]: 0.64, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.42–0.96; p = 0.03). Further adjusting for interleukin-6 plasma levels had no significant impact (RR: 0.60, 95% CI 0.38–0.94; p = 0.03), while additional adjustment for circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) modestly attenuated this association (RR: 0.63, 95% CI 0.40–0.99; p = 0.046). Conclusions: In our study, elevated circulating total adiponectin levels were associated with lower 10-year CVD risk in adults without previous CVD, independently of other established CVD risk factors. This association appeared to be modestly attenuated by CRP, yet was not mediated by interleukin-6 which is the main endocrine/circulating pro-inflammatory cytokine

    Abstract The present paper is the geotechnical study of landslides, carried out as a consequence of the news paper reports with photographs during a tropical depression on 15th and 16th of November 2005. Torrential showers caused extensive floods and landslides accounting for some deaths and damage to houses, agricultural land properties, roadways and bridges. Large amount of debris and mud was dumped into the streams contributing to flooding of some rivers. This is a common phenomenon every year during heavy rains in this part. The sites where landslides have been reported recently and also some other places where landslides took place in the earlier years were visited and the geotechnical observations were made

    Amniocentesis before 14 completed weeks as an alternative to transabdominal chorionic villus sampling:A controlled trial with infant follow-up

    A (semi-) randomized controlled study with long-term follow-up was conducted to compare the effects of transabdominal chorionic villus sampling and early amniocentesis on fetal mortality and child morbidity. Women requesting early prenatal diagnosis for advanced maternal age were allocated to early amniocentesis or transabdominal chorionic villus sampling either by randomization or, if they declined randomization, by their own choice. Of the 212 women who entered the study, 117 were randomized, 70 chose early amniocentesis and 25 chose transabdominal chorionic villus sampling. Overall, 130 women underwent early amniocentesis and 74 underwent transabdominal chorionic villus sampling at a median gestation of 12 weeks. Two women were excluded because of fetal death before the procedure. Mosaic karyotypes were found in 5.4 per cent of the early amniocenteses and in none of the chorionic villus samples. All unintended fetal losses occurred after early amniocentesis with a frequency of 6.2 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval: 2.7 per cent to 11.8 per cent). Talipes equinovarus was only observed after early amniocentesis with a frequency of 3.1 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval: 0.8 per cent to 7.7 per cent). We conclude that chorionic villus sampling remains the method of choice if prenatal diagnosis is needed in the first trimester of pregnancy. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
