Inspired into being in 1979 by the late astronaut, Dr. Ronald McNair, the primary goal of this student centered program is to perform two experiments, Arthopod Development Study and Crystal Growth Study. Since 1979, 78 different students representing 12 majors have participated in every phase of development of the payload -- from coming up with the original ideas to final fabrication and testing. Students have also been involved in many extra activities such as presenting their results at annual meetings and hosting tours of our lab for local schools. The program has received extensive outside support in the form of funds, technical assistance and donated parts. The payload, made primarily out of aluminum, consists of a central column structure, a battery box, a crystal growth box, an arthropod development box, four control circuit boxes, and a thermograph box. The battery box contains 24, Eveready 6V, Alkaline batteries. The thermograph box contains 3 Ryan TempMentors. Fabrication of the payload is essentially complete and a complete testing program has been initiated

One of the purposes of this study was to examine types of classroom management methods used by regular education teachers and special education teachers. Another purpose of this study was to·investigate which management strategies were the most successful and unsuccessful in regular education and special education classrooms . The subjects of this study included 96 elementary school teachers (N=96) from four counties in the state of Virginia. A self developed questionnaire, containing a Likert-type scale in Part A and open-ended questions in Part B, was used to collect data for this study. Fifty-six percent of the questionnaires were returned to the researcher with 54% being scorable . An independent sample t-test was used to determine the significant difference between the strategies used by regular education and special education teachers . Results of the study indicated that there was a significant difference between regular education teachers\u27and special education teachers\u27use of Token Economy (t = -3.31, p \u3c .05) and Classroom Arrangement (t = -2.38, p \u3c .05) strategies in classroom management. No significant differences were found between the seven other classroom management strategies used by regular and special education teachers. A qualitative analysis of the open-ended questions indicated positive reinforcement was perceived as the most successful method in classroom management by both regular and special education teachers. Regular education teachers perceived the most unsuccessful method of classroom management strategies as Punishment, while special educators perceived the most unsuccessful method to be behavior contracts

The purpose of this study was to devise an emergency preparedness plan handbook for the Blue Ridge School District #18, Farmer City, Illinois. The handbook was designed to aid the school administration and staff by defining definite administrative action in carrying out the steps necessary to protect students and staff in the event of an emergency situation. A data base was formed from several sources. Information was received through a review of the literature; a review of organizational materials; a review of information from school districts through a questionnaire; interviews with individuals from professional agencies; and a review of school districts emergency manuals. This study revealed that all 11 school districts bordering the 10 mile zone around the Clinton Nuclear Power Plan have a need for a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan. The Emergency Preparedness Plan Handbook for the Blue Ridge School District #18 is designed to serve as a base for a coordinated district wide emergency plan for district administrators who are unfamiliar with the decisions they may have to make in the event of emergency situation. The handbook contains important procedures for administration to follow when a crisis situation develops and decisions made are of critical importance for the safety of the students and staff. While this handbook is prepared for use by the Blue Ridge School District, the information is readily adaptable as a base upon which any school district may develop a handbook for dealing with emergency situations
