Coefficients and terms of the liquid drop model and mass formula
The coefficients of different combinations of terms of the liquid drop model
have been determined by a least square fitting procedure to the experimental
atomic masses. The nuclear masses can also be reproduced using a Coulomb radius
taking into account the increase of the ratio with increasing
mass, the fitted surface energy coefficient remaining around 18 MeV

Inventory of wetland habitat using remote sensing for the proposed Oahe irrigation unit in eastern South Dakota
An inventory of wetlands for the area included in the proposed Oahe irrigation project was conducted to provide supplemental data for the wildlife mitigation plan. Interpretation techniques for inventoring small wetlands in the low relief terrain of the Lake Dakota Plain were documented and data summaries included. The data were stored and tabulated in a computerized spatial data analysis system
Boundary-detection algorithm for locating edges in digital imagery
The author has identified the following significant results. Initial development of a computer program which implements a boundary detection algorithm to detect edges in digital images is described. An evaluation of the boundary detection algorithm was conducted to locate boundaries of lakes from LANDSAT-1 imagery. The accuracy of the boundary detection algorithm was determined by comparing the area within boundaries of lakes located using digitized LANDSAT imagery with the area of the same lakes planimetered from imagery collected from an aircraft platform
Stability of bubble nuclei through Shell-Effects
We investigate the shell structure of bubble nuclei in simple
phenomenological shell models and study their binding energy as a function of
the radii and of the number of neutron and protons using Strutinsky's method.
Shell effects come about, on the one hand, by the high degeneracy of levels
with large angular momentum and, on the other, by the big energy gaps between
states with a different number of radial nodes. Shell energies down to -40 MeV
are shown to occur for certain magic nuclei. Estimates demonstrate that the
calculated shell effects for certain magic numbers of constituents are probably
large enough to produce stability against fission, alpha-, and beta-decay. No

Determination of the Joint Confidence Region of Optimal Operating Conditions in Robust Design by Bootstrap Technique
Robust design has been widely recognized as a leading method in reducing
variability and improving quality. Most of the engineering statistics
literature mainly focuses on finding "point estimates" of the optimum operating
conditions for robust design. Various procedures for calculating point
estimates of the optimum operating conditions are considered. Although this
point estimation procedure is important for continuous quality improvement, the
immediate question is "how accurate are these optimum operating conditions?"
The answer for this is to consider interval estimation for a single variable or
joint confidence regions for multiple variables.
In this paper, with the help of the bootstrap technique, we develop
procedures for obtaining joint "confidence regions" for the optimum operating
conditions. Two different procedures using Bonferroni and multivariate normal
approximation are introduced. The proposed methods are illustrated and
substantiated using a numerical example.Comment: Two tables, Three figure

In this paper we compare and into four-fermion production
at centre-of-mass energies typical of LEP2 and somewhat larger. The theoretical
framework considered is the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The interest
in exploiting the CERN collider at values of greater than
192 GeV could come from the discovery of Supersymmetric signals during runs at
lower energy. If these indicate that a charged Higgs boson exists in the mass
range \MH\approx95-105 GeV, then a few years of running at
GeV and nominal luminosity could make the detection of such scalars feasible,
in the purely leptonic channel and, for small
\tb's, also in the semi-hadronic(leptonic) one . Charged
Higgs bosons of the above nature cannot be produced by the beam energies
approved at present for LEP2. However, if runs beyond the so-called `192 GeV
cryogenic limit' will be approved by the CERN Council, our selection procedure
will enable us to establish the presence, or otherwise, of charged Higgs bosons

Black Holes with a Generalized Gravitational Action
Microscopic black holes are sensitive to higher dimension operators in the
gravitational action. We compute the influence of these operators on the
Schwarzschild solution using perturbation theory. All (time reversal invariant)
operators of dimension six are included (dimension four operators don't alter
the Schwarzschild solution). Corrections to the relation between the Hawking
temperature and the black hole mass are found. The entropy is calculated using
the Gibbons-Hawking prescription for the Euclidean path integral and using
naive thermodynamic reasoning. These two methods agree, however, the entropy is
