A functional role of Facebook : psychological and social needs.

Two studies were conducted to investigate motivations to use Facebook. In Study 1, data from 87 participants were used to determine which psychological (e.g., competence, autonomy, and relatedness) and social (e.g., achievement, affiliation, intimacy, and power) needs predict concrete, observable Facebook behaviors. The data supported the hypothesis that psychological and social needs will predict Facebook behaviors. The need for competence positively predicts hours per week spent on Facebook and the number of personal websites on Facebook. The need for autonomy positively predicts the number of friends and number of photo albums on Facebook. The need for relatedness negatively predicts the number of friends on Facebook. The need for achievement negatively predicts the number of About Me words on Facebook. The need for affiliation negatively predicts the number of photo albums on Facebook. In Study 2, data from 14 participants were used to determine the effect of social exclusion on response time to login to Facebook. The data supported the hypothesis that socially excluded individuals will log into Facebook faster than non-socially excluded individuals. For the socially excluded, Facebook can function to reduce social pain. These results suggest that one function of Facebook is to maintain balance in life between psychological needs, social needs, and social interactions

Black women at the crossroads: Agency, interruptions, and oppression in education

This dissertation utilizes intersectionality, critical race feminism (CRF), Black feminist research and case studies to explore Black women’s oppression in education. This research study contributes to a growing body of work on Black females’ experiences of marginalization socially and educationally. The aim of this research was threefold: (a) to provide a theoretical analysis on the marginalization of Black females in society and exercising agency; (b) to explore my own memories and amplify my voice through an autoethnography, highlighting personal lived experiences of oppression in education; and (c) to provide a qualitative analysis on Black women oppression, amplifying the voices of participants and placing them at the center of the analysis. A small dataset of four participants allowed me to identify and report specific themes that emerged from their stories. Experiences shared in this research shed light on various ways Black females experience and navigate oppression. The findings reveal intersecting social injustices that played a key role in their educational experiences

Ultrastructure of Bone Marrow of Rats After Severe Hemodilution with Starch or Modified Hemoglobin

The ultrastructure of bone marrow of rats was studied 24 h after exchange-transfusion with solutions of starch or modified hemoglobin to a hematocrit of 10-15. Blood smears of the transfused rats had 17-20% reticulocytes as compared to 5-6% for sham operated controls. In the transfused rats marrow macrophages had numerous heterolysosomes apparently containing the starch or hemoglobin from the transfused solutions. Endothelial cells and reticular cells also possessed a few heterolysosomes thought to contain starch or hemoglobin. Reticular cells of the transfused rats contained numerous glycogen particles scattered throughout the cytoplasm or arranged in large masses. Synthesis of glycogen may indicate a metabolic change in reticular cells in response to tissue hypoxia induced by the exchange-transfusion procedure

Documentary criminology: Girl Model as a case study

Visual and cultural criminology are integrated with documentary filmmaking to develop a theoretically grounded, practice-based approach called ‘documentary criminology’. The first section establishes the need for documentary filmmaking in criminology and outlines methodological opportunities. The second section examines theoretically the aesthetics and substance of documentary criminology. The third section takes the film Girl Model (Redmon and Sabin, 2011) as a case study to demonstrate how documentary criminology embedded in lived experience (in this case, the experience of scouts that recruit young Russian girls, purportedly for the modelling industry) can depict sensuous immediacy. The final section contrasts the aesthetic and ethical consequences of documentary criminology within Carrabine’s (2012, 2014) concept of ‘just’ images to a documentary filmmaking approach that remains interpretively open-ended. Aging in Rural Appalachia: Perspectives from Geriatric Social Service Professionals

This paper uses qualitative methodology to explore the experience of growing old in rural Appalachia. Given the growing population of older adults seeking and utilizing services, it is important to understand the challenges and specific needs related to aging. Within the context of rural Appalachia, these challenges and needs may be different than those in urban areas or areas outside of the region itself. From interviews with 14 geriatric service providers in rural southeast Ohio, the authors were able to identity three prevalent themes associated with aging in rural North Central Appalachia: scarcity of resources, valuing neighbors and family, and the prevalence of drug use. These findings suggest that preparation and ongoing training of rural geriatric social workers should include attention to topics such as substance abuse and strengthening social support networks that often exist in these regions

Deflected jet experiments in a turbulent combustor flowfield

Experiments were conducted to characterize the time-mean and turbulent flow field of a deflected turbulent jet in a confining cylindrical crossflow. Jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios of 2, 4, and 6 were investigated, under crossflow inlet swirler vane angles of 0 (swirler removed), 45 and 70 degrees. Smoke, neutrally buoyant helium-filled soap bubbles, and multi-spark flow visualization were employed to highlight interesting features of the deflected jet, as well as the tracjectory and spread pattern of the jet. A six-position single hot-wire technique was used to measure the velocities and turbulent stresses in nonswirling crossflow cases. In these cases, measurements confirmed that the deflected jet is symmetrical about the vertical plan passing through the crossflow axis, and the jet penetration was found to be reduced from that of comparable velocity ratio infinite crossflow cases. In the swirling crossflow cases, the flow visualization techniques enabled gross flow field characterization to be obtained for a range of lateral jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios and a range of inlet swirl strengths in the main flow
