    Ground-based gravitational wave laser interferometers (LIGO, GEO-600, Virgo and Tama-300) have now reached high sensitivity and duty cycle. We present a Bayesian evidence-based approach to the search for gravitational waves, in particular aimed at the followup of candidate events generated by the analysis pipeline. We introduce and demonstrate an efficient method to compute the evidence and odds ratio between different models, and illustrate this approach using the specific case of the gravitational wave signal generated during the inspiral phase of binary systems, modelled at the leading quadrupole Newtonian order, in synthetic noise. We show that the method is effective in detecting signals at the detection threshold and it is robust against (some types of) instrumental artefacts. The computational efficiency of this method makes it scalable to the analysis of all the triggers generated by the analysis pipelines to search for coalescing binaries in surveys with ground-based interferometers, and to a whole variety of signal waveforms, characterised by a larger number of parameters.Comment: 9 page

    TUT7 catalyzes the uridylation of the 3′ end for rapid degradation of histone mRNA

    The replication-dependent histone mRNAs end in a stem–loop instead of the poly(A) tail present at the 3′ end of all other cellular mRNAs. Following processing, the 3′ end of histone mRNAs is trimmed to 3 nucleotides (nt) after the stem–loop, and this length is maintained by addition of nontemplated uridines if the mRNA is further trimmed by 3′hExo. These mRNAs are tightly cell-cycle regulated, and a critical regulatory step is rapid degradation of the histone mRNAs when DNA replication is inhibited. An initial step in histone mRNA degradation is digestion 2–4 nt into the stem by 3′hExo and uridylation of this intermediate. The mRNA is then subsequently degraded by the exosome, with stalled intermediates being uridylated. The enzyme(s) responsible for oligouridylation of histone mRNAs have not been definitively identified. Using high-throughput sequencing of histone mRNAs and degradation intermediates, we find that knockdown of TUT7 reduces both the uridylation at the 3′ end as well as uridylation of the major degradation intermediate in the stem. In contrast, knockdown of TUT4 did not alter the uridylation pattern at the 3′ end and had a small effect on uridylation in the stem–loop during histone mRNA degradation. Knockdown of 3′hExo also altered the uridylation of histone mRNAs, suggesting that TUT7 and 3′hExo function together in trimming and uridylating histone mRNAs

    The Living Application: a Self-Organising System for Complex Grid Tasks

    We present the living application, a method to autonomously manage applications on the grid. During its execution on the grid, the living application makes choices on the resources to use in order to complete its tasks. These choices can be based on the internal state, or on autonomously acquired knowledge from external sensors. By giving limited user capabilities to a living application, the living application is able to port itself from one resource topology to another. The application performs these actions at run-time without depending on users or external workflow tools. We demonstrate this new concept in a special case of a living application: the living simulation. Today, many simulations require a wide range of numerical solvers and run most efficiently if specialized nodes are matched to the solvers. The idea of the living simulation is that it decides itself which grid machines to use based on the numerical solver currently in use. In this paper we apply the living simulation to modelling the collision between two galaxies in a test setup with two specialized computers. This simulation switces at run-time between a GPU-enabled computer in the Netherlands and a GRAPE-enabled machine that resides in the United States, using an oct-tree N-body code whenever it runs in the Netherlands and a direct N-body solver in the United States.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures, accepted by IJHPC

    Children's suggestibility in relation to their understanding about sources of knowledge

    In the experiments reported here, children chose either to maintain their initial belief about an object's identity or to accept the experimenter's contradicting suggestion. Both 3– to 4–year–olds and 4– to 5–year–olds were good at accepting the suggestion only when the experimenter was better informed than they were (implicit source monitoring). They were less accurate at recalling both their own and the experimenter's information access (explicit recall of experience), though they performed well above chance. Children were least accurate at reporting whether their final belief was based on what they were told or on what they experienced directly (explicit source monitoring). Contrasting results emerged when children decided between contradictory suggestions from two differentially informed adults: Three– to 4–year–olds were more accurate at reporting the knowledge source of the adult they believed than at deciding which suggestion was reliable. Decision making in this observation task may require reflective understanding akin to that required for explicit source judgments when the child participates in the task
