A reduced semantics for deciding trace equivalence using constraint systems
Many privacy-type properties of security protocols can be modelled using
trace equivalence properties in suitable process algebras. It has been shown
that such properties can be decided for interesting classes of finite processes
(i.e., without replication) by means of symbolic execution and constraint
solving. However, this does not suffice to obtain practical tools. Current
prototypes suffer from a classical combinatorial explosion problem caused by
the exploration of many interleavings in the behaviour of processes.
M\"odersheim et al. have tackled this problem for reachability properties using
partial order reduction techniques. We revisit their work, generalize it and
adapt it for equivalence checking. We obtain an optimization in the form of a
reduced symbolic semantics that eliminates redundant interleavings on the fly.Comment: Accepted for publication at POST'1
Formal Analysis of V2X Revocation Protocols
Research on vehicular networking (V2X) security has produced a range of
security mechanisms and protocols tailored for this domain, addressing both
security and privacy. Typically, the security analysis of these proposals has
largely been informal. However, formal analysis can be used to expose flaws and
ultimately provide a higher level of assurance in the protocols.
This paper focusses on the formal analysis of a particular element of
security mechanisms for V2X found in many proposals: the revocation of
malicious or misbehaving vehicles from the V2X system by invalidating their
credentials. This revocation needs to be performed in an unlinkable way for
vehicle privacy even in the context of vehicles regularly changing their
pseudonyms. The REWIRE scheme by Forster et al. and its subschemes BASIC and
RTOKEN aim to solve this challenge by means of cryptographic solutions and
trusted hardware.
Formal analysis using the TAMARIN prover identifies two flaws with some of
the functional correctness and authentication properties in these schemes. We
then propose Obscure Token (OTOKEN), an extension of REWIRE to enable
revocation in a privacy preserving manner. Our approach addresses the
functional and authentication properties by introducing an additional key-pair,
which offers a stronger and verifiable guarantee of successful revocation of
vehicles without resolving the long-term identity. Moreover OTOKEN is the first
V2X revocation protocol to be co-designed with a formal model.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
Reentrant violation of special relativity in the low-energy corner
In the effective relativistic quantum field theories the energy region, where
the special relativity holds, can be sandwiched from both the high and low
energies sides by domains where the special relativity is violated. An example
is provided by 3He-A where the relativistic quantum field theory emerges as the
effective theory. The reentrant violation of the special relativity in the
ultralow energy corner is accompanied by the redistribution of the
momentum-space topological charges between the fermionic flavors. At this
ultralow energy an exotic massless fermion with the topological charge
arises, whose energy spectrum mixes the classical and relativistic behavior.
This effect can lead to neutrino oscillations if neutrino flavors are still

Flow cytometric DNA ploidy analysis of ovarian granulosa cell tumors
Abstract
The nuclear DNA content of 50 ovarian tumors initially diagnosed as granulosa cell tumors was measured by flow cytometry using paraffin-embedded archival material. The follow-up period of the patients ranged from 4 months to 19 years. Thirty-eight tumors were diploid or near-diploid, while 5 were aneuploid. DNA profiles of 7 tumors could not be evaluated. All 50 tumors were immunohistochemically tested for expression of intermediate filament proteins vimentin and cytokeratin and epithelial membrane antigen. The cells of all but 3 tumors expressed vimentin. These 3 vimentin-negative tumors were positive for cytokeratin and epithelial membrane antigen. They were highly aneuploid and though originally diagnosed as granulosa cell tumors, most likely represent undifferentiated carcinomas. Hence, only 2 typical granulosa cell tumors were aneuploid. In addition, frozen tissue samples from 9 of 10 granulosa cell tumors showed a DNA diploid content. Our results indicate that granulosa cell tumors tend to be diploid or have only minor ploidy abnormalities which is in line with their relatively benign character. An undifferentiated carcinoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of tumors with a high DNA index
Deep bore well water level fluctuations in the Koyna region, India: the presence of a low order dynamical system in a seismically active environment
Water level fluctuations in deep bore wells in the vicinity of seismically active Koyna region in western India provides an opportunity to understand the causative mechanism underlying reservoir-triggered earthquakes. As the crustal porous rocks behave nonlinearly, their characteristics can be obtained by analysing water level fluctuations, which reflect an integrated response of the medium. A Fractal dimension is one such measure of nonlinear characteristics of porous rock as observed in water level data from the Koyna region. It is inferred in our study that a low nonlinear dynamical system with three variables can predict the water level fluctuations in bore wells
Qualitative Analysis of Partially-observable Markov Decision Processes
We study observation-based strategies for partially-observable Markov
decision processes (POMDPs) with omega-regular objectives. An observation-based
strategy relies on partial information about the history of a play, namely, on
the past sequence of observations. We consider the qualitative analysis
problem: given a POMDP with an omega-regular objective, whether there is an
observation-based strategy to achieve the objective with probability~1
(almost-sure winning), or with positive probability (positive winning). Our
main results are twofold. First, we present a complete picture of the
computational complexity of the qualitative analysis of POMDP s with parity
objectives (a canonical form to express omega-regular objectives) and its
subclasses. Our contribution consists in establishing several upper and lower
bounds that were not known in literature. Second, we present optimal bounds
(matching upper and lower bounds) on the memory required by pure and randomized
observation-based strategies for the qualitative analysis of POMDP s with
parity objectives and its subclasses
Natural organic matter in sedimentary basins and its relation to arsenic in anoxic ground water: the example of West Bengal and its worldwide implications
In order to investigate the mechanism of As release to anoxic ground water in alluvial aquifers, the authors sampled ground waters from 3 piezometer nests, 79 shallow (80 m) wells, in an area 750 m by 450 m, just north of Barasat, near Kolkata (Calcutta), in southern West Bengal. High concentrations of As (200-1180 mug L-1) are accompanied by high concentrations of Fe (3-13.7 mgL(-1)) and PO4 (1-6.5 mg L-1). Ground water that is rich in Mn (1-5.3 mg L-1) contains <50 mug L-1 of As. The composition of shallow ground water varies at the 100-m scale laterally and the metre-scale vertically, with vertical gradients in As concentration reaching 200 mug L-1 m(-1). The As is supplied by reductive dissolution of FeOOH and release of the sorbed As to solution. The process is driven by natural organic matter in peaty strata both within the aquifer sands and in the overlying confining unit. In well waters, thermotolerant coliforms, a proxy for faecal contamination, are not present in high numbers (<10 cfu/100 ml in 85% of wells) showing that faecally-derived organic matter does not enter the aquifer, does not drive reduction of FeOOH, and so does not release As to ground water.Arsenic concentrations are high (much greater than50 mug L-1) where reduction of FeOOH is complete and its entire load of sorbed As is released to solution, at which point the aquifer sediments become grey in colour as FeOOH vanishes. Where reduction is incomplete, the sediments are brown in colour and resorption of As to residual FeOOH keeps As concentrations below 10 mug L-1 in the presence of dissolved Fe. Sorbed As released by reduction of Mn oxides does not increase As in ground water because the As resorbs to FeOOH. High concentrations of As are common in alluvial aquifers of the Bengal Basin arise because Himalayan erosion supplies immature sediments, with low surface-loadings of FeOOH on mineral grains, to a depositional environment that is rich in organic mater so that complete reduction of FeOOH is common. Androgen receptor expression in human ovarian and uterine tissue of long term androgen-treated transsexual women
Androgen receptor (AR) modulation in human uteri and ovaries of long term androgen-treated transsexual female patients was investigated. Androgen receptor expression was evaluated immunohistochemically in the ovaries of 11 and the endometria and myometria of six androgen-treated transsexual female patients. This was compared with AR expression in the ovaries and uteri of premenopausal and postmenopausal women not receiving treatment and in 10 ovaries of female patients with polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD). In the normal ovaries germinal epithelium, granulosa cells of antral follicles, corpus luteum, and thecal and stromal cells exhibited moderate AR expression. The more intense and uniform staining of ovarian stroma of female transsexual patients and those of patients with PCOD compared with ovarian stroma of normal controls was most remarkable. This similarity in histology and distribution of ARs supports the hypothesis that PCOD is an androgen-mediated disorder. Immunostaining for ARs was only occasionally detectable in the uteri of premenopausal and postmenopausal women. In contrast, myometrial and endometrial stroma of the uteri of female transsexual patients displayed an intense and diffuse nuclear immunostaining, but glandular epithelia remained unstained. Western blot analysis of the ovaries and uterine myometrial tissue samples from transsexual female patients confirmed the presence of the 110-kd AR molecule. Because the androgen treatment of some transsexual female patients was discontinued 6 weeks before they underwent hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy, our data indicate a stable and persistent androgen-induced up-regulation of AR expression in ovaries
Observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charmed baryon decay Λ_c^+→pφ
We report the observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays Λ_c^+→pK^-K^+ and Λ_c^+→pφ using data collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR. The latter mode, observed for the first time with significant statistics, is of interest as a test of color suppression in charm decays. We have determined the branching ratios for these modes relative to Λ_c^+→pK^-π^+ and compared our results with theory
A condensed matter interpretation of SM fermions and gauge fields
We present the bundle Aff(3) x C x /(R^3), with a geometric Dirac equation on
it, as a three-dimensional geometric interpretation of the SM fermions. Each C
x /(R^3) describes an electroweak doublet. The Dirac equation has a
doubler-free staggered spatial discretization on the lattice space Aff(3) x C
(Z^3). This space allows a simple physical interpretation as a phase space of a
lattice of cells in R^3. We find the SM SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y action on
Aff(3) x C x /(R^3) to be a maximal anomaly-free special gauge action
preserving E(3) symmetry and symplectic structure, which can be constructed
using two simple types of gauge-like lattice fields: Wilson gauge fields and
correction terms for lattice deformations. The lattice fermion fields we
propose to quantize as low energy states of a canonical quantum theory with
Z_2-degenerated vacuum state. We construct anticommuting fermion operators for
the resulting Z_2-valued (spin) field theory. A metric theory of gravity
