Ruin problems and dual events
Dickson (1992) uses dual events to explain results relating to the distribution of the surplus immediately prior to ruin in the classical surplus process. In this paper we show that dual events can be used to explain other results in ruin theory. The effect on interest of negative surplus
In the classical continuous time surplus process, we allow the process to continue if the surplus falls below zero. When the surplus is below zero, we assume that the insurer borrows any sum of money required to pay claims, and pays interest on this borrowing. We use simulation to study moments and distributions of three quantities: the time to recovery to surplus level zero, the number of claims that occur when the surplus is below zero, and the maximum absolute value of the surplus process when it is below zero. Differential Hox expression in murine embryonic stem cell models of normal and malignant hematopoiesis
The Hox family are master transcriptional regulators of developmental processes, including hematopoiesis. The Hox regulators, caudal homeobox factors (Cdx1-4), and Meis1, along with several individual Hox proteins, are implicated in stem cell expansion during embryonic development, with gene dosage playing a significant role in the overall function of the integrated Hox network. To investigate the role of this network in normal and aberrant, early hematopoiesis, we employed an in vitro embryonic stem cell differentiation system, which recapitulates mouse developmental hematopoiesis. Expression profiles of Hox, Pbx1, and Meis1 genes were quantified at distinct stages during the hematopoietic differentiation process and compared with the effects of expressing the leukemic oncogene Tel/PDGFR;2. During normal differentiation the Hoxa cluster, Pbx1 and Meis1 predominated, with a marked reduction in the majority of Hox genes (27/39) and Meis1 occurring during hematopoietic commitment. Only the posterior Hoxa cluster genes (a9, a10, a11, and a13) maintained or increased expression at the hematopoietic colony stage. Cdx4, Meis1, and a subset of Hox genes, including a7 and a9, were differentially expressed after short-term oncogenic (Tel/PDGFR;2) induction. Whereas Hoxa4-10, b1, b2, b4, and b9 were upregulated during oncogenic driven myelomonocytic differentiation. Heterodimers between Hoxa7/Hoxa9, Meis1, and Pbx have previously been implicated in regulating target genes involved in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) expansion and leukemic progression. These results provide direct evidence that transcriptional flux through the Hox network occurs at very early stages during hematopoietic differentiation and validates embryonic stem cell models for gaining insights into the genetic regulation of normal and malignant hematopoiesis

Quantum Computing and Hidden Variables I: Mapping Unitary to Stochastic Matrices
This paper initiates the study of hidden variables from the discrete,
abstract perspective of quantum computing. For us, a hidden-variable theory is
simply a way to convert a unitary matrix that maps one quantum state to
another, into a stochastic matrix that maps the initial probability
distribution to the final one in some fixed basis. We list seven axioms that we
might want such a theory to satisfy, and then investigate which of the axioms
can be satisfied simultaneously. Toward this end, we construct a new
hidden-variable theory that is both robust to small perturbations and
indifferent to the identity operation, by exploiting an unexpected connection
between unitary matrices and network flows. We also analyze previous
hidden-variable theories of Dieks and Schrodinger in terms of our axioms. In a
companion paper, we will show that actually sampling the history of a hidden
variable under reasonable axioms is at least as hard as solving the Graph
Isomorphism problem; and indeed is probably intractable even for quantum

Paraphrases and summaries: A means of clarification or a vehicle for articulating a preferred version of student accounts?
The use of group discussions as a means to facilitate learning from experiences is well documented in adventure education literature. Priest and Naismith (1993) assert that the use of the circular discussion method, where the leader poses questions to the participants, is the most common form of facilitation in adventure education. This paper draws on transcripts of facilitation sessions to argue that the widely advocated practice of leader summaries or paraphrases of student responses in these sessions functions as a potential mechanism to control and sponsor particular knowledge(s). Using transcripts from recorded facilitation sessions the analysis focuses on how the leader paraphrases the students’ responses and how these paraphrases or ‘formulations’ function to modify or exclude particular aspects of the students’ responses. I assert that paraphrasing is not simply a neutral activity that merely functions to clarify a student response, it is a subtle means by which the leader of the session can, often inadvertently or unknowingly, alter the student’s reply with the consequence of favouring particular knowledge(s). Revealing the subtle work that leader paraphrases perform is of importance for educators who claim to provide genuine opportunities for students to learn from their experience
PKS2250-41: a case study for triggering
We present the results of a multiwavelength study of the z = 0.31 radio
source PKS2250-41. Integral field unit and long-slit spectroscopy obtained
using VIMOS and FORS1 on the VLT, and archival HST optical imaging observations
are used to study the morphology, kinematics and ionisation state of the
extended emission line region (EELR) surrounding this source, and also a
companion galaxy at a similar redshift. Near-infrared imaging observations
obtained using the NTT are used to analyse the underlying galaxy morphologies.
The EELR displays a complex variety of different gas kinematics and ionization
states, consistent with a mixture of radio source shocks and AGN
photoionization. The radio galaxy is likely to lie within a group environment,
and is plausibly undergoing interactions with one or more other objects. The
disk-like galaxy to the northeast of the radio source lies at a similar
redshift to the radio galaxy itself, and has its major axis position angle
aligned with the filamentary continuum and line emission extending outwards
from the radio galaxy. This filamentary structure is most plausibly interpreted
as a tidal structure associated with an interaction involving the radio source
host galaxy and the aligned companion galaxy to the north-east; this encounter
may have potentially triggered the current epoch of radio source activity.
Overall, PKS2250-41 displays some of the best evidence that radio source

Jump-like unravelings for non-Markovian open quantum systems
Non-Markovian evolution of an open quantum system can be `unraveled' into
pure state trajectories generated by a non-Markovian stochastic (diffusive)
Schr\"odinger equation, as introduced by Di\'osi, Gisin, and Strunz. Recently
we have shown that such equations can be derived using the modal (hidden
variable) interpretation of quantum mechanics. In this paper we generalize this
theory to treat jump-like unravelings. To illustrate the jump-like behavior we
consider a simple system: A classically driven (at Rabi frequency )
two-level atom coupled linearly to a three mode optical bath, with a central
frequency equal to the frequency of the atom, , and the two side
bands have frequencies . In the large limit we
observed that the jump-like behavior is similar to that observed in this system
with a Markovian (broad band) bath. This is expected as in the Markovian limit
the fluorescence spectrum for a strongly driven two level atom takes the form
of a Mollow triplet. However the length of time for which the Markovian-like
behaviour persists depends upon {\em which} jump-like unraveling is used.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

Mental health first aid for the UK Armed Forces
Education programmes in mental health literacy can address stigma and misunderstanding of mental health. This study investigated self-rated differences in knowledge, attitudes and confidence around mental health issues following participation in a bespoke Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course for the Armed Forces. The mixed methods approach comprised quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A survey, administered immediately post training (n=602) and again at 10- months post attendance (n=120), asked participants to rate their knowledge, attitudes and confidence around mental health issues pre and post training. Quantitative findings revealed a significant increase in knowledge, positive attitudes and confidence from the post training survey which was sustained at 10-months follow-up. Semi-structured telephone interviews (n=13) were conducted at follow-up, 6- months post attendance. Qualitative findings revealed that participation facilitated an ‘ambassador’ type role for participants. This study is the first to have investigated the effect of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) in an Armed Forces community. Findings show participants perceived the training to increase knowledge regarding mental health and to enhance confidence and aptitude for identifying and supporting people with mental health problems. Results suggest that such an intervention can provide support for personnel, veterans and their families, regarding mental health in Armed Forces communities
