The variable Reynolds capability of the National Transonic Facility will provide a tool for understanding and quantifying uncertainties involved in extrapolating the corrected wind tunnel data from tunnel conditions to full scale flight conditions

    Some design considerations for supersonic cruise mixed compression inlets

    A mixed compression inlet designed for supersonic cruise has very demanding requirements for high total pressure recovery and low bleed and cowl drag. However, since the optimum inlet for supersonic cruise performance may have other undesirable characteristics, it is necessary to establish trade-offs between inlet performance and other inlet characteristics. Some of these trade-offs between the amount of internal compression, aerodynamic performance and angle-of-attack tolerance are reviewed. Techniques for analysis of boundary layer control and subsonic diffuser flow are discussed

    The performance of candidate supersonic cruise inlets is reviewed and the aerodynamic installation penalties for each type are defined. The main characteristics that affect the airflow schedules of variable cycle engines are defined. These schedules are compared with the airflow schedules of the candidate inlets, and appropriate inlets are matched to the variable-cycle engine characteristics. Auxiliary inlets are also considered

    A survey of inlet/engine distortion compatibility

    The history of distortion analysis is traced back to its origin in parallel compressor theory which was initially proposed in the late fifties. The development of this theory is reviewed up to its inclusion in the complex computer codes of today. It is found to be a very useful tool to guide development but not quantitative enough to predict compatibility. Dynamic or instantaneous distortion methodology is also reviewed from its origins in the sixties, to its current application in the eighties. Many of the requirements for interpreting instantaneous distortion are considered and illustrated. Statistical methods for predicting the peak distortion are described, and their limitations and advantages discussed. Finally, some Reynolds number and scaling considerations for inlet testing are considered. It is concluded that the deterministic instantaneous distortion methodology combined with distortion testing of engines with screens will remain the primary method of predicting compatibility for the near future. However, parallel compressor analysis and statistical peak distortion prediction will be important tools employed during the development of inlet/engine compatibility

    We show how a theorem of Sullivan provides a precise mathematical statement of a 3d holographic principle, that is, the hyperbolic structure of a certain class of 3d manifolds is completely determined in terms of the corresponding Teichmuller space of the boundary.     Quantum error-correcting codes and 4-dimensional arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds

    Using 4-dimensional arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds, we construct some new homological quantum error correcting codes. They are LDPC codes with linear rate and distance nϵn^\epsilon. Their rate is evaluated via Euler characteristic arguments and their distance using Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-systolic geometry. This construction answers a queston of Z\'emor, who asked whether homological codes with such parameters could exist at all.Comment: 21 page

    Current wind tunnel capability and planned improvements at Lewis Research Center

    As the propulsion and power generation center of NASA, Lewis has designed its wind tunnels for propulsion research. Therefore, the 8 by 6 Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel and the 10 by 10 Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel provide the capability to test operating propulsion systems from Mach 0.4 to 3.5. The 9 by 15 Foot Wind Tunnel can investigate propulsion installation problems at the lower takeoff and landing speeds and provides an excellent anechoic environment to measure propeller and fan noise. The Lewis Central Air System provides steady air supplies to 450 psi, and exhaust to 3 in. of mercury absolute, which are available to the wind tunnels for simulation of jets and engine induced flows. The Lewis Icing Research Tunnel is the largest in the free world that can produce icing conditions throughout the year. Rehabilitation of the Altitude Wind Tunnel at Lewis would allow testing of propulsion systems in the upper left hand corner which would be a unique capability. Also, in a mothballed state at Lewis, the Hypersonic Tunnel Facility could provide the best simulation of nonvitiated Mach 5-7 test conditions available. Studies are currently being made of the Lewis facilities to identify enhancements of their research potential for the 1990's and beyond
