How Polarized Have We Become? A Multimodal Classification of Trump Followers and Clinton Followers
Polarization in American politics has been extensively documented and
analyzed for decades, and the phenomenon became all the more apparent during
the 2016 presidential election, where Trump and Clinton depicted two radically
different pictures of America. Inspired by this gaping polarization and the
extensive utilization of Twitter during the 2016 presidential campaign, in this
paper we take the first step in measuring polarization in social media and we
attempt to predict individuals' Twitter following behavior through analyzing
ones' everyday tweets, profile images and posted pictures. As such, we treat
polarization as a classification problem and study to what extent Trump
followers and Clinton followers on Twitter can be distinguished, which in turn
serves as a metric of polarization in general. We apply LSTM to processing
tweet features and we extract visual features using the VGG neural network.
Integrating these two sets of features boosts the overall performance. We are
able to achieve an accuracy of 69%, suggesting that the high degree of
polarization recorded in the literature has started to manifest itself in

Estimating Small Area Income Deprivation: An Iterative Proportional Fitting Approach
Small area estimation and in particular the estimation of small area income deprivation has
potential value in the development of new or alternative components of multiple deprivation
indices. These new approaches enable the development of income distribution threshold based
as opposed to benefit count based measures of income deprivation and so enable the
alignment of regional and national measures such as the Households Below Average Income
with small area measures. This paper briefly reviews a number of approaches to small area
estimation before describing in some detail an iterative proportional fitting based spatial
microsimulation approach. This approach is then applied to the estimation of small area HBAI
rates at the small area level in Wales in 2003-5. The paper discusses the results of this
approach, contrasts them with contemporary âofficialâ income deprivation measures for the
same areas and describes a range of ways to assess the robustness of the results
An analysis of integrative outcomes in the Dayton peace negotiations
The nature of the negotiated outcomes of the eight issues of the Dayton Peace Agreement was studied in terms of their integrative and distributive aspects. in cases where integrative elements were Sound, further analysis was conducted by concentrating on Pruitt's five types of integrative solutions: expanding the pie, cost cutting, non-specific compensation, logrolling, and bridging. The results showed that real world international negotiations can arrive at integrative agreements even when they involve redistribution of resources tin this case the redistribution of former Yugoslavia). Another conclusion was that an agreement can consist of several distributive outcomes and several integrative outcomes produced by different kinds of mechanisms. Similarly, in single issues more than one mechanism can be used simultaneously. Some distributive bargaining was needed in order to determine how much compensation was required. An Experimental Investigation of Colonel Blotto Games
"This article examines behavior in the two-player, constant-sum Colonel Blotto game with asymmetric resources in which players maximize the expected number of battlefields won. The experimental results support all major theoretical predictions. In the auction treatment, where winning a battlefield is deterministic, disadvantaged players use a 'guerilla warfare' strategy which stochastically allocates zero resources to a subset of battlefields. Advantaged players employ a 'stochastic complete coverage' strategy, allocating random, but positive, resource levels across the battlefields. In the lottery treatment, where winning a battlefield is probabilistic, both players divide their resources equally across all battlefields." Gender differences in the evolution of haute cuisine chef's career
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Journal of Culinary Science & Technology on 2020, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/15428052.2019.1640156[EN] This article reviews gender differences in the career paths of successful chefs, including barriers, success factors, and the entrepreneurial path. The research was developed in 2016-17, using an international survey carried out in Spain, France, and the United States among culinary students, cooks, and chefs who responded to a structured questionnaire based on pre-selected topics. The results show that a chef's career requires various sets of skills. They should be leaders, mentors, and entrepreneurs. They work in a hard and competitive environment where building their brand and achieving public recognition is a must. Their professional satisfaction depends on learning, evolving, and launching their restaurant. Corruption and bicameral reforms
During the last decade unicameral proposals have been put forward in fourteen US states. In this paper we analyze the effects of the proposed constitutional reforms, in a setting where decision making is subject to âhard time constraintsâ, and lawmakers face the opposing interests of a lobby and the electorate. We show that bicameralism might lead to a decline in the lawmakersâ bargaining power vis-a-vis the lobby, thus compromising their accountability to voters. Hence, bicameralism is not a panacea against the abuse of power by elected legislators and the proposed unicameral reforms could be effective in reducing corruption among elected representatives
Justice from an interdisciplinary perspective: the impact of the revolution in Human Sciences on Peace Research and International Relations
Peace and justice have been a preferred couple in theoretical writings - but what do we know about their empirical relationship? Insights from other disciplines suggest that humans are highly sensitive to violations of justice and that justice concerns permeate social relations. Neuroscientists have located the parts of the brain responsible for negative reactions to violation of claims for justice. Evolutionary biologists have identified rules of distribution and retribution not only in early human societies but among other socially living species as well. Psychologists have observed the emergence of a sense of justice in very early childhood, while behavioral economists have identified behavior of average persons in experiments that deviated significantly from the model of the "economic man" and could only be explained by a sense of justice. The chapter summarizes these findings and outlines their implications for peace research. It highlights the ambivalent nature of justice for social relations. Justice concerns can exacerbate conflicts between individuals and groups but justice can also provide standards for arriving at durable peaceful solutions to conflicts. Understanding these ambivalences and their repercussions for international and intrastate relations provides a promising path towards understanding conflict dynamics
Insights on impact from the development, delivery and evaluation of the CLEAR IDEAS innovation training model
The increasing pressure on organisations to innovate more effectively in what they deliver and how they work means there is a distinct need for interventions that enhance the innovation
capabilities of employees. This paper therefore describes insights from the development, delivery and impact evaluation of a research-based innovation training model (CLEAR IDEAS) designed to improve both the idea generation and idea implementation competencies of trainees. How key findings from the creativity and innovation literature were turned into a
practical model and its operationalisation in practice are first discussed. This is followed by presenting a longitudinal evaluation of the training intervention with 151 public sector leaders. Findings showed that the model was well received, led to significant improvements in innovation competencies and resulted in certain trainees undertaking a range of actions to
introduce innovations back in the workplace while others failed to apply their learning. Longer-term data provided several examples of subsequent notable ultimate impacts on
organisationsâ functioning and public service delivery. Finally, reflections on key training, trainee, task and work environment facilitators and inhibitors of innovation training impact are
offered
