Hierarchical Merger of Primordial Black Holes in Dwarf Galaxies
We study the merger history of primordial black holes (PBHs) in a scenario
where they represent the dominant dark matter component of a typical dwarf
galaxies' core. We investigate the possibility of a sequence of collisions
resulting in a hierarchical merger of black holes and look at the final mass
spectrum in such {\it clusters}, which initially present a monochromatic
(single-mass) PBH population. Our study shows that the merging process results
in the transfer of about of the total mass of the core to the merger
products regardless of the initial mass of PBHs, with about of energy
radiated out in the form of gravitational waves. We find that, in the lighter
mass limit, black holes up to eight times more massive than the original
population can be formed within a Hubble time.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, updated reference

A new mouse model to study restoration of interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression in a Cre-dependent manner : microglial IL-6 regulation of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
Altres ajuts: "La Marató TV3" 20142210Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine that controls numerous physiological processes both in basal and neuroinflammatory conditions, including the inflammatory response to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). IL-6 is produced by multiple peripheral and central cells, and until now, the putative roles of IL-6 from different cell types have been evaluated through conditional cell-specific IL-6 knockout mice. Nevertheless, these mice probably undergo compensatory responses of IL-6 from other cells, which makes it difficult to assess the role of each source of IL-6. To give some insight into this problem, we have produced a novel mouse model: a conditional reversible IL-6 KO mouse (IL6-DIO-KO). By using double-inverted, open-reading-frame (DIO) technology, we created a mouse line with the loss of Il6 expression in all cells that can be restored by the action of Cre recombinase. Since microglia are one of the most important sources and targets of IL-6 into the central nervous system, we have recovered microglial Il6 expression in IL6-DIO-KO mice through breeding to Cx3cr1 -CreER mice and subsequent injection of tamoxifen (TAM) when mice were 10-16 weeks old. Then, they were immunized with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein 35-55 peptide (MOG) 7 weeks after TAM treatment to induce EAE. Clinical symptoms and demyelination, CD3 infiltration, and gliosis in the spinal cord were evaluated. IL6-DIO-KO mice were resistant to EAE, validating the new model. Restoration of microglial Il6 was sufficient to develop a mild version of EAE-related clinical symptoms and neuropathology. IL6-DIO-KO mouse is an excellent model to understand in detail the role of specific cellular sources of IL-6 within a recovery-of-function paradigm in EAE
Spatially Explicit Modeling Reveals Cephalopod Distributions Match Contrasting Trophic Pathways in the Western Mediterranean Sea
Populations of the same species can experience different responses to the environment
throughout their distributional range as a result of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in habitat
conditions. This highlights the importance of understanding the processes governing
species distribution at local scales. However, research on species distribution often averages
environmental covariates across large geographic areas, missing variability in population-
environment interactions within geographically distinct regions. We used spatially
explicit models to identify interactions between species and environmental, including chlorophyll
a (Chla) and sea surface temperature (SST), and trophic (prey density) conditions,
along with processes governing the distribution of two cephalopods with contrasting life-histories
(octopus and squid) across the western Mediterranean Sea. This approach is relevant
for cephalopods, since their population dynamics are especially sensitive to variations
in habitat conditions and rarely stable in abundance and location. The regional distributions
of the two cephalopod species matched two different trophic pathways present in the western
Mediterranean Sea, associated with the Gulf of Lion upwelling and the Ebro river discharges
respectively. The effects of the studied environmental and trophic conditions were
spatially variant in both species, with usually stronger effects along their distributional
boundaries. We identify areas where prey availability limited the abundance of cephalopod
populations as well as contrasting effects of temperature in the warmest regions. Despite
distributional patterns matching productive areas, a general negative effect of Chla on
cephalopod densities suggests that competition pressure is common in the study area.
Additionally, results highlight the importance of trophic interactions, beyond other common
environmental factors, in shaping the distribution of cephalopod populations. Our study presents a valuable approach for understanding the spatially variant ecology of cephalopod

Primordial black hole formation during slow-reheating: a review
In this paper we review the possible mechanisms for the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) during a slow-reheating period in which the energy transfer of the inflaton field to standard model particles becomes effective at slow temperatures, offering a comprehensive examination of the theoretical foundations and conditions required for each of formation channel. In particular, we focus on post-inflationary scenarios where there are no self-resonances and the reheating epoch can be described by the inflaton evolving in a quadratic-like potential. In the hydrodynamical interpretation of this field during the slow-reheating epoch, the gravitational collapse of primordial fluctuations is subject to conditions on their sphericity, limits on their spin, as well as a maximum velocity dispersion. We show how to account for all conditions and show that PBHs form with different masses depending on the collapse mechanism. Finally we show, through an example, how PBH production serves to probe both the physics after primordial inflation, as well as the primordial powerspectrum at the smallest scales

Case report: First report on human infection by tick-borne Babesia bigemina in the Amazon region of Ecuador.
Babesiosis is a protozoan disease acquired by the bite of different species of ticks. More than 100 Babesia spp. infect wild and domestic animals worldwide, but only a few have been documented to infect humans. Generally, babesiosis is asymptomatic in immunocompetent persons; however, in immunocompromised can be life-threatening. A 13-year-old boy from the Amazon region presented with a 3-month evolution of fever, chills, general malaise, and arthralgia accompanied by anemia and jaundice. In the last 4 years was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. By nested-PCR using 18S RNA ribosomal gene as target and DNA sequencing, the phylogenetic analysis showed Babesia bigemina as the causative agent in the blood. Treatment with oral quinine plus clindamycin for six continuous weeks was effective with no relapse occurring during 12 months of follow-up. This is the second human case in Ecuador but the first caused by the zoonotic B. bigemina which confirms the existence of active transmission that should alert public health decision-making authorities on the emergence of this zoonosis and the need for research to determine strategies to reduce tick exposure
Cfr(B), cfr(C), and a New cfr-Like Gene, cfr(E), in Clostridium difficile Strains Recovered across Latin America
Indexación: Scopus.Cfr is a radical S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) enzyme that confers cross-resistance to antibiotics targeting the 23S rRNA through hypermethylation of nucleotide A2503. Three cfr-like genes implicated in antibiotic resistance have been described, two of which, cfr(B) and cfr(C), have been sporadically detected in Clostridium difficile. However, the methylase activity of Cfr(C) has not been confirmed. We found cfr(B), cfr(C), and a cfr-like gene that shows only 51 to 58% protein sequence identity to Cfr and Cfr-like enzymes in clinical C. difficile isolates recovered across nearly a decade in Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Chile. This new resistance gene was termed cfr(E). In agreement with the anticipated function of the cfrlike genes detected, all isolates exhibited high MIC values for several ribosome-targeting antibiotics. In addition, in vitro assays confirmed that Cfr(C) and Cfr(E) methylate Escherichia coli and, to a lesser extent, C. difficile 23S rRNA fragments at the expected positions. The analyzed isolates do not have mutations in 23S rRNA genes or genes encoding the ribosomal proteins L3 and L4 and lack poxtA, optrA, and pleuromutilin resistance genes. Moreover, these cfr-like genes were found in Tn6218-like transposons or integrative and conjugative elements (ICE) that could facilitate their transfer. These results indicate selection of potentially mobile cfr-like genes in C. difficile from Latin America and provide the first assessment of the methylation activity of Cfr(C) and Cfr(E), which belong to a cluster of Cfr-like proteins that does not include the functionally characterized enzymes Cfr, Cfr(B), and Cfr(D).https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/AAC.01074-1

Geographic Distribution of Human Infections with Zoonotic Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Anthropophilic Hookworms in Ecuador: A Retrospective Analysis of Archived Stool Samples.
Zoonotic human infections with Ancylostoma ceylanicum have recently been reported in the Americas. We used archived human stool samples to study the geographic distribution of human infections with A. ceylanicum and anthropophilic hookworms in different geoclimatic regions (coastal, Andean, and Amazon) of Ecuador. We analyzed retrospectively archived human stool samples from five studies previously screened for hookworm infection by microscopy, of which four included hookworm-positive samples only and one involved hookworm-negative samples to increase geographic distribution of sampling. Stools were analyzed using multi-parallel quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays to detect Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, A. ceylanicum, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and Strongyloides stercoralis. Sequencing was done for the A. ceylanicum cox1 gene. A total of 132 samples were analyzed, of which 69 (52.3%) were from hookworm-positive and 63 (47.7%) from hookworm-negative individuals by microscopy. Overall, 82.6% of microscopy-positive samples and 33.3% of microscopy-negative samples were positive for hookworm by qPCR. Of microscopy-positive samples, 36.2% were A. ceylanicum, 37.7% A. duodenale, and 33.3% N. americanus, whereas equivalent proportions for microscopy-negative samples were 1.6%, 31.7%, and 1.6%, respectively. Ancylostoma duodenale was the most widely dispersed geographically, followed by N. americanus. Ancylostoma ceylanicum was least dispersed but was detected in coastal and Amazon regions. In conclusion, human infections with A. ceylanicum, A. duodenale, and N. americanus were detected in different geoclimatic regions of Ecuador. Additional studies are required to further define the epidemiology of human A. ceylanicum infections, but the potentially widespread presence of this helminth in human populations in Ecuador has implications for hookworm control strategies
Characterising droughts in Central America with uncertain hydro-meteorological data
Central America is frequently affected by droughts that cause significant socio-economic and environmental problems. Drought characterisation, monitoring and forecasting are potentially useful to support water resource management. Drought indices are designed for these purposes, but their ability to characterise droughts depends on the characteristics of the regional climate and the quality of the available data. Local comprehensive and high-quality observational networks of meteorological and hydrological data are not available, which limits the choice of drought indices and makes it important to assess available datasets. This study evaluated which combinations of drought index and meteorological dataset were most suitable for characterising droughts in the region. We evaluated the standardised precipitation index (SPI), a modified version of the deciles index (DI), the standardised precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and the effective drought index (EDI). These were calculated using precipitation data from the Climate Hazards Group Infra-Red Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS), the CRN073 dataset, the Climate Research Unit (CRU), ECMWF Reanalysis (ERA-Interim) and a regional station dataset, and temperature from the CRU and ERA-Interim datasets. The gridded meteorological precipitation datasets were compared to assess how well they captured key features of the regional climate. The performance of all the drought indices calculated with all the meteorological datasets was then evaluated against a drought index calculated using river discharge data. Results showed that the selection of database was more important than the selection of drought index and that the best combinations were the EDI and DI calculated with CHIRPS and CRN073.
