Kroetschās View of Myth and the Poetics of Out West Triptych
The article focuses on Robert Kroetschās view of myth and mythical fragments in his Out West Triptych and essays. One of the leading postmodernists in Canada, Kroetsch insisted on the generative use of myths and stories as well as on the free combination of mythical fragments which can release new meanings. The article points to the significance of place and prairie in Kroetsch\u27s work as well as to the creation of new meaning when a mythical fragment is used in a new Canadian context and the story is told in a different way emphasizing the two important characteristics of myth: generativity and newness

The regional position of the world container traffic is analysed in particular, indicating the most important container traffic regions and the world container traffic flows. Analysing the container traffic intensity and the dynamics in the world container ports, as referent nodes of the container traffic flows, the main world, Asiatic, American and European container ports are defined. Based on the current data and relevant forecasts of the container traffic flow dynamics and development, some predictions of the container trade development as well as the distribution of the container traffic volume towards the leading market regions are analysed too
Vegetable by-products in the European food legislative framework
Vegetable by-products are a source of many useful bioactive compounds, dietary fiber, fatty acids and proteins that have a great potential in the development of new food products and the promotion of the circular economy and sustainability. Considering processed pepper by-products as an example, the aim of this paper is to provide an overview of EU food legislation that should be taken into account before placing such products on the market, as well as of the voluntary labeling of functional, nutritional and sustainability benefits important for consumers
A practical application of sensory and rheological measurement in the development of fish pĆ¢tĆ© quality attributes
The flavor and texture of fish pĆ¢tĆ© are the most important attributes for consumers. The aim of the study was to analyze and compare commercial fish pĆ¢tĆ© with a laboratory prototype by combining sensory and rheological measurements. Quantitative Descriptive Analysis and Texture profile were established by expert sensory panelists, while the texture was additionally examined through rheological measurement. The results show a statistically significant difference between samples in relation to four flavor characteristics (color, fish odor, flavor saltiness, p < 0.05) and five texture characteristics (surface, plasticity, spreadability, density, graininess, p < 0.05). Regarding texture profile, the commercial fish pĆ¢tĆ© showed firmer density, and spreadability than does the laboratory prototype. Sensory and rheological data for both samples were highly positively correlated. Although the laboratory prototype has reached a certain level of desirable characteristics of fish pate (color, taste, spices) the acceptability of the observed differences in texture should be examined on a representative sample of consumers
Characterisation of New Bacillus circulans Strain Isolated from Oil Shale
A new strain of Bacillus sp. was obtained during experiments of oil shale demineralization, which were carried out in order to get āpureā organic matter (kerogen). The demineralization efficiency of newly isolated strain was found to be substantially higher in comparison with that of Bacillus circulans Jordan 1890. On the basis of the biochemical characteristics, protein patterns and fatty acid composition, as well as the whole genome profile and 16S rDNA sequencing, the new strain was identified as Bacillus circulans VD01
The concentration of tumor necrosis factor alpha in periapical lesions
Introduction. The balance between proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory
cytokines plays an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic periapical
lesions. The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of TNF-Ī± in
tissue homogenates of periapical lesions and analyze its levels in relation
to the symptomatology and the size of lesions. Materials and Methods. 93
samples of chronic periapical lesions were obtained after extraction of
teeth. Samples were classified according to the clinical presentation as
symptomatic and asymptomatic, and according to the size as large and small.
The concentration of TNF-Ī± was analyzed using ELISA. Results. The results
showed increased production of TNF-Ī± in symptomatic lesions compared to
asymptomatic. Higher concentration of TNF-Ī± was demonstrated in large lesions
compared to small. Large symptomatic lesions showed greater concentration of
TNF-Ī± compared to small symptomatic lesions, while bigger asymptomatic
lesions demonstrated higher amount of the cytokines compared to small
asymptomatic lesions. Conclusion. Higher concentration of TNF-Ī± in large
symptomatic lesions indicates that TNF-Ī± is an important factor responsible
for the progression of lesions
The impact of smoke point and aroma profile of sweet red pepper seed oil on culinary application and consumer acceptance
The category of edible plant oils with additional health and sustainable benefits is growing steadily. However, this category still represents a relatively small market segment known as āniche oilsā. Oils derived from byproducts, especially seeds, are considered as functional foods due to their properties. However, to increase their usage, it is necessary to examine their sensory acceptability among consumers. The results of this research demonstrate that cold-pressed sweet pepper seed oil (Capsicum annuum L.), from the Podravka and Slavonka cultivars, is acceptable to consumers as an ingredient in meal preparation and in various processed food products, due to its favorable organoleptic and physicochemical characteristics. The quality of oil is highly dependent on the quick manipulation of pepper seeds. Pepper seeds, that have been dried for a shorter time, yield oil that has a higher smoke point (230 Ā°C), which makes it suitable even for frying food. Aroma profile analysis revealed that cold-pressed sweet pepper seed oil is rich in terpene trans-Ī²-ocimene (40%), as dominant component. Trans-Ī²-ocimene plays a crucial role in the plantās protective mechanisms their during growth and development. Consequently, sweet pepper seed oil represents a potential natural resource for isolating this terpene to be used as a biopesticide. Notably, this innovative oil is entirely produced from byproducts (seeds) and thus it provides an additional benefit for consumers who seek to contribute to the sustainability of our planet through their dietary choices. Therefore, this oil holds significant potential for closing the loop in the circular bioeconomy
Copper Electrodeposition onto Palladium from a Deep Eutectic System Based on Choline Chloride
Recently, there has been an increasing interest in developing nonaqueous electrolytes which have been widely employed as an alternative media for a range of metals and metal alloys electrodepositions. A promising and new class of electrolytes among ionic liquids (Ils) are deep eutectic solvents (DESs)1 . The purpose of the copper deposition study from DESs is the application of copper coating and copper alloys in both, industry and fundamental research. In this work, the electrochemical deposition of copper onto palladium working substrate from ChCl/EG (1:2 ratio) DES electrolyte at 50Ā°C was investigated. Additionally, the Cu(II) electroreduction process was studied by potentiodynamic measurements, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, in the electrolytes with different concentrations of Cu(II) ions ranging from 0.1 M to 0.5 M. The cyclic voltammetry results indicated that the bulk deposition of Cu(II) begins to occur at around ā0.080 V vs. Cu. It was found that copper deposition onto the Pd cathode from ChCl:EG electrolyte under potentiostatic conditions is achievable. Data collected from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved that the cathodic deposits are composed of Cu and CuPd intermetallic. CuPd alloys with different Pd-Cu ratios were prepared by constant potential of ā0.100 V vs. Cu from ChCl/EG containing 0.1 M and 0.5 M Cu(II). It is worth noting that the Xray data indicated that the composition of the produced Pd-Cu films could be varied by changing the concentration of Cu(II) ions in the electrolyte or changing the deposition mode
