    Savage

Savage is a stop-motion, animated graduate thesis film. It was originally conceived as a story about the perils of socially constructed reality. The film follows a feral boy and his dog as they go hunting to close to civilization. One day the two come upon a farm and it is their undoing. This film was made using traditional stop motion techniques, with the assistance of Dragon Stop Motion Software. The post work, mainly rig removal was done in After Effects and Photoshop. The following is an attempt to outline my process from concept to completion

Perfectionism is increasing over time: A meta-analysis of birth cohort differences from 1989 to 2016

From the 1980s onward, neoliberal governance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom has emphasized competitive individualism and people have seemingly responded, in kind, by agitating to perfect themselves and their lifestyles. In this study, the authors examine whether cultural changes have coincided with an increase in multidimensional perfectionism in college students over the last 27 years. Their analyses are based on 164 samples and 41,641 American, Canadian, and British college students, who completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Hewitt & Flett, 1991) between 1989 and 2016 (70.92% female, Mage = 20.66). Cross-temporal meta-analysis revealed that levels of self-oriented perfectionism, socially prescribed perfectionism, and other-oriented perfectionism have linearly increased. These trends remained when controlling for gender and between-country differences in perfectionism scores. Overall, in order of magnitude of the observed increase, the findings indicate that recent generations of young people perceive that others are more demanding of them, are more demanding of others, and are more demanding of themselves

The relationships between parental conditional regard and adolescents' self-critical and narcissistic perfectionism

Studies show that the development of perfectionism in adolescence is associated with psychologically controlling parenting. The current study extends research in this area by examining the relationship between a specific aspect of psychologically controlling parenting, parental conditional regard, and two dimensions of perfectionism, self-critical perfectionism and narcissistic perfectionism. Three hundred and sixteen adolescents (M age = 15.69 years, s = 1.23) completed a standardised questionnaire. Structural equation modelling revealed that both self-critical perfectionism and narcissistic perfectionism were positively predicted by parental conditional regard. Our findings are the first to suggest that parent socialization characterised by guilt inducement and love withdrawal may be common to the development of these two distinct dimensions of perfectionism

Long-Term, Seasonal, and Event-Driven Sediment Movement on East Beach, San Salvador Island, Bahamas

East Beach is a modern, medium-energy shoreline located on the northeast coast of San Salvador Island, Bahamas. Stake and horizon profiles were made at 9 sites along a 1-km section of the beach in June, 1990, and every six months thereafter through January,1992. These observations appear to confirm that East Beach is a prograding shoreline, building onto the eastern shelf of the island. Seasonally corrected volume calculations indicate that between June, 1990 and January, 1992 approximately 14,000 m3 of new sand per kilometer were added to the East Beach system, with most of the sand likely derived from the nearshore shelf area. Visual evidence for progradation could be seen in the formation of a heavily vegetated berm along the backshore, that by June, 1991 had reached a maximum height of 40 cm before its destruction by the powerful storm that hit San Salvador in late October, 1991. Seasonal topographic measurements and volume calculations indicate a minimum of 8,600 m3/km of sediment moving offshore in response to higher average wave energies in the winter, and returning to build a wide foreshore and pronounced berm during the summer months. The late October storm battered East Beach with waves that entrained meter-sized blocks of coral, cut back the primary dune line by an average of 5.1 m, and washed over approximately 1,500 m3of sediment into the primary dune swale. Storm damage was measurably less severe at northern stations, possibly because of sheltering by Northeast Point and Man Head Cay, or by baffling action of the dense patch reefs offshore, or both

The Oncogenic Activity of the Latent Membrane Protein of EBV in Transgenic Mice

There is an ever increasing list of disease states which have been shown to have an association with EBV latent infection. In particular research has focused on the latent membrane protein (LMP-1). Study of this gene has largely been restricted to B-cells in vitro due to the inability to infect epithelial cells with EBV in vitro. This has resulted in little information concerning the effects of LMP-1 in an epithelial environment. As a consequence, the role of LMP-1 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), with which EBV is most closely associated, is poorly understood. Creation of transgenic mice where LMP-1 is directed to the epithelial cell compartment has therefore achieved two important goals. LMP-1 can now be studied in an epithelial cell in vivo whilst the mice provide the first step in a model for the disease state of NPC. In this study the mechanism of action of LMP-1 in the PyLMP-1 line 53 of transgenic mice has been investigated. In addition, a study on the progression of the transgenic LMP-1 induced hyperplastic phenotype to carcinoma has been conducted. Firstly, using immunohistochemical techniques, the hyperplastic epidermal phenotype of the PyLMP-1 mice previously reported is shown to result from a 2-3 fold increase in the rate of cellular proliferation whilst differentiation continues unimpeded in the transgenic skin. Secondly, the mouse skin model of multi-stage carcinogenesis is utilised to show that LMP-1 does not act as an initiator of carcinogenesis nor does it affect the conversion to a more malignant tumour. However, LMP-1 does function to increase both the rate and number of lesions forming during chemical tumour promotion, and more importantly LMP-1 acts as a weak or second stage promoter on it's own. This finding has significant implications for NPC. Thirdly, by cross-breeding PyLMP-1 line 53 with other lines of transgenic or knockout mice it is shown that LMP-1 does not co-operate with activated Ra-ras or loss of p53 function in tumour progression. However, the combination of the PyLMP-1 transgene and K10-TGF?1 transgene results in embryonic lethality. Lastly, the EmuLMP-1 line 39 transgenic mice which express LMP-1 in the B-cell compartment at very low levels have been studied for a 24 month period and shown to succumb to a long latency lymphoma

Effects of the mutations Ala30 to Pro and Ala53 to Thr on the physical and morphological properties of α-synuclein protein implicated in Parkinson's disease

Abstractα-Synuclein (α-syn) protein has been found in association with the pathological lesions of a number of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, mutations in the α-syn gene have been reported in families susceptible to an inherited form of Parkinson's disease. We report here that human wild-type α-syn, PD-linked mutant α-syn(Ala30Pro) and mutant α-syn(Ala53Thr) proteins can self-aggregate and form amyloid-like filaments. The mutant α-syn forms more β-sheet and mature filaments than the wild-type protein. These findings suggest that accumulation of α-syn as insoluble deposits of amyloid may play a major role in the pathogenesis of these neurodegenerative diseases
