Industrial production is one of the leading indicators of gross domestic product which reflects the overall economic performance of a country. In other words decreases or increases in industrial production point out a contracting or expanding economy. Therefore, changes in prices of oil and natural gas which are the crucial inputs to the industrial production are also important for the overall economy. This study examines the effects of changes in oil and natural gas prices on the industrial production in the 18 Eurozone member countries during the period January 2001-September 2013 by using panel regression. We found that oil prices and natural gas prices had negative effect on industrial production in the Eurozone member countries.

Determining the causal relationships among entrepreneurship, educational attainment and per capita GDP in high-income OECD countries

The entrepreneurship has been evaluated as playing a central role in explaining economic growth by many economists and policy makers. This role has recently been the subject of a growing literature. However, entrepreneurship literature generally has been focused on evaluating the effect of entrepreneurship on economic growth. This study will evaluate the causal relationships among women’s and men’s entrepreneurship, women’s and men’s educational attainment and per capita GDP in 20 high-income OECD countries over the period 2001-2011. To do this, applying the Granger panel non-causality test, the empirical findings of the study showed that there exists a unidirectional causal relationship running from women’s entrepreneurship to women’s educational attainment. Thus, the findings showed that the women entrepreneurship is a reason for increased women’s educational attainment. In addition, the findings showed that per capita GDP is important source for the total entrepreneurship activities as well as women’s and men’s educational attainment

Effects of Currency Unions on Foreign Direct Investment Inflows: The European Economic and Monetary Union Case

ABSTRACT: Reducing exchange rate and inflation, transaction costs and achieving the economic convergence among member countries are major causes of establishing a monetary union. This paper examines the effects of European Economic and Monetary Union on inflows of foreign direct investments to the Eurozone by using panel data from 16 Group of 20 countries for the period 1999-2012. We found that real GDP, GDP growth rate and exchange rates of 16 Group20 countries affect inflows of real foreign direct investment positively while exchange rate volatility, inflation volatility and distance affects inflows of real foreign direct investment negatively. So European Economic and Monetary Union contribute to the inflows of foreign direct investment by reducing the exchange rate volatility, inflation volatility and distance and supporting economic growth

Testing the Validity of Political Business Cycle for the Fragile Five Countries

Abstract. Using panel least squares estimation method, this study examines the linksbetween both the business cycles-the components of political stability and the businesscycles- aggregate political index (overall score) in the Fragile Five countries, namelyTurkey, Indonesia, India, South Africa and Brazil for the period 1986-2013. According tothe empirical findings, higher degrees of political instability are associated with lowergrowth rates of GDP. Moreover, the results suggest that law and order, socio-economicconditions and internal conflict have a positive impact on GDP growth rate. In otherwords, countries with a lower political risk related to these three indicators had greaterGDP growth rate in the period 1986 to 2013. In addition, other findings suggest that highinflation and greater population growth are associated with lower GDP growth, whileGDP growth rate in a previous year are positively associated with the business cycles. So,we concluded that political stability is playing an important role in shaping of the businesscycles of the Fragile Five countries

Buckling and post-buckling behavior of various dented cylindrical shells using CFRP strips subjected to uniform external pressure: Comparison of theoretical and experimental data

    No full text
Thin-walled circular cylindrical shells are used in many civil engineering applications. Any initial geometric imperfections and the type of applied load determine the buckling and the post buckling of cylindrical thin-walled shell structures. Fourteen thin-walled cylindrical shell models in two groups (labelled without CFRP and with CFRP) with different dent directions (H = horizontal, V = vertical and D = 45 degrees diagonal direction) and dent depths (2t(c) and 4t(c)) subjected to external pressure were tested in the present research (t(c) is the thickness of the cylindrical shell). The results of testing under different theories and codes are compared. Moreover, the results are identified and investigated in the present experimental research

CFRP Effect on the Buckling Behavior of Dented Cylindrical Shells

Considering that the use of thin-walled shells is expanding every day, it is important to examine the problem of instability in this form of structure. Many steel structures such as high-water tanks, water and oil reservoirs, marine structures, and pressure vessels, including shell elements, are under stress tension. In addition, shell elements are subject to instability owing to the loads applied. Ten thin-walled cylindrical shell specimens in two groups with different dent depths of t(c) and 2t(c), and the different dent number subject to uniform external pressure were tested in the present research (t(c) is the thickness of cylindrical shell). The samples were modified to include either one or two dent line with amplitudes of h/3 in height (h the height of cylinder shell). Moreover, CFRP Strips on the dent depth was used in one of the groups. The results of testing under different theories and codes are compared
