    A tunable plasmonic refractive index sensor with nanoring-strip graphene arrays

    In this paper, a tunable plasmonic refractive index sensor with nanoring-strip graphene arrays is numerically investigated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The simulation results exhibit that by changing the sensing medium refractive index nmed of the structure, the sensing range of the system is large. By changing the doping level ng, we noticed that the transmission characteristics can be adjusted flexibly. The resonance wavelength remains entirely the same and the transmission dip enhancement over a big range of incidence angles [0,45] for both TM and TE polarizations, which indicates that the resonance of the graphene nanoring-strip arrays is insensitive to angle polarization. The above results are undoubtedly a new way to realize various tunable plasmon devices, and may have a great application prospect in biosensing, detection and imaging

    Trends of overweight and obesity prevalence in school-aged children among Henan Province from 2000 to 2019

    ObjectivesOverweight and obesity are harmful to human health. However, the latest trends of Chinese childhood overweight and obesity prevalence are not available. The aim of this study was to examine the trends from 2000 to 2019 among students in China.MethodsWe analyzed data of 66,072 students in the Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health from 2000 to 2019. Overweight and obesity were defined based on the standard formulated by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF standard), the World Health Organization (WHO standard), and the Working Group on Obesity in China (WGOC standard), respectively. The χ2-test was used to test the trends of overweight and obesity prevalence and logistic regression was conducted to evaluate the prevalence odds ratios of boys vs. girls and urban vs. rural areas.ResultsThe prevalence of obesity/overweight and obesity combined was 6.03/23.58% (IOTF standard), 10.56/25.88% (WGOC standard) and 10.75/29.69% (WHO standard) in 2019. From 2000 to 2019, according to the WGOC standard, the prevalence increased from 2.51 to 10.56% for obesity and increased from 9.81 to 25.88% for overweight and obesity combined (P for trend < 0.001). Obesity/overweight and obesity were greater problems in boys than girls and urban than rural areas, but urban-rural differences decreased over time.ConclusionOverweight and obesity prevalence increased significantly in children and adolescents in China from 2000 to 2019. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in rural areas may contribute to a large percentage of children with overweight and obesity

    Upregulated PD-1 Expression Is Associated with the Development of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, but Not the PD-1.1 Allele of the PDCD1 Gene

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disease with complicated genetic inheritance. Programmed death 1 (PD-1), a negative T cell regulator to maintain peripheral tolerance, induces negative signals to T cells during interaction with its ligands and is therefore a candidate gene in the development of SLE. In order to examine whether expression levels of PD-1 contribute to the pathogenesis of SLE, 30 patients with SLE and 30 controls were recruited and their PD-1 expression levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were measured via flow cytometry and quantitative real-time-reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Also, whether PD-1 expression levels are associated with the variant of the SNP rs36084323 and the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) was studied in this work. The PD-1 expression levels of SLE patients were significantly increased compared with those of the healthy controls. The upregulated PD-1 expression levels in SLE patients were greatly associated with SLEDAI scores. No significant difference was found between PD-1 expression levels and SNP rs36084323. The results suggest that increased expression of PD-1 may correlate with the pathogenesis of SLE, upregulated PD-1 expression may be a biomarker for SLE diagnosis, and PD-1 inhibitor may be useful to SLE treatment

    Human epididymis protein 4, a novel potential biomarker for diagnostic and prognosis monitoring of lung cancer

    Abstract Objective This study aimed to explore the application value of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) in diagnosing and monitoring the prognosis of lung cancer. Methods First, TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) databases were used to analyze whey‐acidic‐protein 4‐disulfide bond core domain 2 (WFDC2) gene expression levels in lung cancer tissues. Then, a total of 160 individuals were enrolled, categorized into three groups: the lung cancer group (n = 80), the benign lesions group (n = 40), and the healthy controls group (n = 40). Serum HE4 levels and other biomarkers were quantified using an electro‐chemiluminescent immunoassay. Additionally, the expression of HE4 in tissues was analyzed through immunohistochemistry (IHC). In vitro cultures of human airway epithelial (human bronchial epithelial [HBE]) cells and various lung cancer cell lines (SPC/PC9/A594/H520) were utilized to detect HE4 levels via western blot (WB). Results Analysis of the TCGA and UALCAN (The University of Alabama at Birmingham Cancer Data Analysis Portal) databases showed that WFDC2 gene expression levels were upregulated in lung cancer tissues (p < 0.01). Compared with the control group and the benign group, HE4 was significantly higher in the serum of patients with lung cancer (p < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis confirmed that HE4 had better diagnostic efficacy than classical markers in the differential diagnosis of lung cancer and benign lesions and had the highest diagnostic value in lung adenocarcinoma (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.826). HE4 increased in early lung cancer and positively correlated with poor prognosis (p < 0.001). Moreover, the results of WB and IHC revealed that the expression of HE4 was increased in lung cancer cells (SPC/A549/H520) and lung cancer tissues but decreased in PC9 cells with a lack of exon EGFR19 (p < 0.05). Conclusion Serum HE4 emerges as a promising novel biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis assessment of lung cancer

    Aerobic Oxidation of Fluorene to 9-fluorenone by Liquid-phase Catalysis and Separation of 9-fluorenone from Phenanthrene

    To realize fluorene oxidation to 9-fluorenone with high selectivity in a short time and highly efficient separation of 9-fluorenon from phenathrene, the effect of solvent and catalyst on the oxidation of fluorene to 9-fluorenone, and the type and dosage of quaternary ammonium salt phase transfer agent with the co-existance of phenathrene was investigated. Thereafter, the separation performance of phenanthrene and 9-fluorenone with different solvents was investigated. The results show that, with xylene as solvent, 45% potassium hydroxide aqueous solution as catalyst, tetrabutylammonium bromide as phase transfer agent, fluorene was completely converted into 9-fluorenone within 3 h, and phenanthrene did not participate in the reaction. With methanol, ethanol, and n-butanol as the separation solvents of phenanthrene and 9-fluorenone, cyclohexane and pentane as the refining solvents of 9-fluorenone, the purity of phenanthrene and 9-fluorenone reached above 96%. With anthracene residue as raw material, anthracene and carbazole did not participate the reaction, the purity of phenanthrene and 9-fluorenone was 97.39% and 93.66%, and the yield was 72.04% and 50.85%, respectively

    The role of neutrophils in corneal nerve regeneration

    Abstract Background To investigate the role of neutrophils in corneal nerve regeneration. Methods A mouse model simulating corneal nerve injury was established and samples from corneal scraping with and without neutrophil closure were collected. These samples were used for corneal nerve staining, ribonucleic acid sequencing, and bioinformatics. Differential expression analysis was used to perform enrichment analysis to identify any significant differences between these two groups. The differential genes were then intersected with neutrophil-associated genes and a protein-protein interaction network was constructed using the intersected genes. The immune infiltration between the two groups was examined along with the immune cell variation between the high and low gene expression groups. Results Neutrophil removal delays corneal epithelial and nerve regeneration. A total of 546 differential genes and 980 neutrophil-associated genes, with 27 genes common to both sets were obtained. Molecular Complex Detection analysis yielded five key genes, namely integrin subunit beta 2 (ITGB2), matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), epidermal growth factor (EGF), serpin family E member 1 (SERPINE1), and plasminogen activator urokinase receptor (PLAUR). Among these genes, ITGB2, SERPINE1, and PLAUR exhibited increased expression in the neutrophil-confined group, while MMP9 and EGF showed decreased expression, with MMP9 and EGF displaying a more significant difference. Immune infiltration was also observed between the two groups, revealing significant differences in the infiltration of M0 macrophages, activated mast cells, and neutrophils. Moreover, the neutrophil levels were lower in the groups with low MMP9 and EGF expressions and higher in the high-expression group. Conclusion Neutrophil confinement might significantly affect the MMP9 and EGF expression levels. Strategies to inhibit MMP9 could potentially yield therapeutic benefits

    Effects of gelatin type and concentration on the preparation and properties of freeze-dried fish oil powders

    Abstract The effects of gelatin type (porcine skin gelatin, PSG; bovine skin gelatin, BSG; fish gelatin, FG; or cold-water fish skin gelatin, CFG) and concentration on the preparation and properties of fish oil powders were investigated in this work. The oil powders were prepared using the combination method of gelatin-sodium hexametaphosphate complex coacervation with starch sodium octenyl succinate (SSOS)-aided freeze-drying. Compared with the other gelatins, CFG—with an unobvious isoelectric point, a lower molecular weight, more hydrogen bonds, and longer gel formation time—could not form complex coacervates, which are necessary to prepare oil powders. For oil powders obtained from the other gelatins, gelatin type and concentration did not have obvious effects on microscale morphologies; they did, however, have significant effects on physicochemical properties. The highest peroxide values of the oil powders were mainly dependent on the gelatins, expressed in the following manner: PSG (153 ± 5 – 168 ± 3 meq/Kg oil) < BSG (176 ± 5 – 188 ± 1 meq/Kg oil) < FG (196 ± 11 – 201 ± 22 meq/Kg oil). Acidic and neutral pH could not dissolve the complex coacervates. However, the oil powders could be quickly dissolved to form emulsion droplets in the gastric phase, and that SSOS increased coacervate stability and promoted oil digestion during the in vitro gastrointestinal process. In sum, this study contributes fundamental information to understanding the development of fish oil solid encapsulation preparations
