Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use by african american (AA) and caucasian american (CA) older adults in a rural setting: a descriptive, comparative study
BACKGROUND: The use of CAM is at an all time high. There is very little research that compares the use of CAM in elders by ethnicity in rural settings. The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a difference between African American and Caucasian American rural elders on use of CAM and self-reported satisfaction with CAM. METHODS: The design was a descriptive, comparative study of 183 elders who reported the number of CAM used and satisfaction with CAM. A convenience sample was recruited through community service organizations in the state of Mississippi. The availability of elders through the support groups, sampling bias, subject effect, and self-report were limitations of the study. RESULTS: The commonest examples of CAM used by rural elders were prayer, vitamins, exercise, meditation, herbs, chiropractic medicine, glucosamine, and music therapy. Significant findings on SES and marital status were calculated. Differences on ethnicity and demographic variables were significant for age, education, and the use of glucosamine. CONCLUSIONS: Health care providers must be aware that elders are using CAM and are satisfied with their use. Identifying different uses of CAM by ethnicity is important for health care practitioners, impacting how health care is provided

Forced displacement it is one of the many phenomena the scourge of violence, which it constitutes the violation of human rights and crimes against humanity, affecting mainly farmers, indigenous, afrodescendant and women. In this document the Gloria’ story, taken from “Life Stories” is analyzed, which the respective reflection as well as the formulation of questions (strategic, circular and reflexive) that could be asked to the victim. The fact is that Gloria has to do with forced displacement and discrimination because she is one more victim of the armed conflict that exists in the interior of the country. Gloria's case has to do with forced displacement and discrimination because she is one more victim of the armed conflict that exists in the interior of our country.
These questions are oriented towards an ethical and proactive psychosocial approach in overcoming victimization conditions. Similarly; support actions are presented to the affected people according to the Pandurí case and psychosocial strategies for the psychosocial approach were given. These supports are made with the reflection and analyze of each one partner of group. This is a collaborative homework in which opinion and contributions are take in account.
Likewise, the fotovoice as a strategic in order to show the social reality we allow to analyze and understand the situation that affect people in different context. In the present document it was possible to demonstrate that the realities shown by the classmates refer to situations that are currently experienced as social violence, cultural violence, intrafamily violence, child abuse, abandonment in basic sanitation and streets by the State. Situations that require special attention so much that affects the quality of life of the people and communities that inhabit the different regions. Thus, our social responsibility as professionals Psychology is oriented in design and implementation strategies and activities that allowed communities to reach a better life quality. Finally, the analytical and reflective report of the photovoice experience made in step 3 of the Diploma is presented
Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) analysis of palm oil fatty acid composition in an interspecific pseudo-backcross from Elaeis oleifera (HBK) Cort,s and oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.)
IATE Axe 4 : Biotechnologie microbienne et enzymatique des lipides et des agropolymèresWe chose an Elaeis interspecific pseudo-backcross of first generation (E. oleifera x E. guineensis) x E. guineensis to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for fatty acid composition of palm oil. A dense microsatellite linkage map of 362 loci spanned 1.485 cM, representing the 16 pairs of homologous chromosomes in the Elaeis genus from which we traced segregating alleles from both E. oleifera and E. guineensis grandparents. The relative linear orders of mapped loci suggested the probable absence of chromosome rearrangements between the E. oleifera and E. guineensis genomes. A total of 19 QTL associated to the palm oil fatty acid composition were evidenced. The QTL positions and the species origin as well as the estimated effects of the QTL marker alleles were in coherence with the knowledge of the oil biosynthesis pathway in plants and with the individual phenotypic correlations between the traits. The mapping of chosen Elaeis key genes related to oleic acid C18:1, using intra-gene SNPs, supported several QTLs underlying notably FATA and SAD enzymes. The high number of hyper-variable SSR loci of known relative linear orders and the QTL information make these resources valuable for such mapping study in other Elaeis breeding materials
Predictive Value of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Feature Tracking after Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Comparison with Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography
[EN] In acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) may underestimate segmental functional recovery. We evaluated the predictive value of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) feature-tracking (FT) for functional recovery and whether it incremented the value of LGE compared to low-dose dobutamine stress echocardiography (LDDSE) and speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE). Eighty patients underwent LDDSE and CMR within 5-7 days after STEMI and segmental functional recovery was defined as improvement in wall-motion at 6-months CMR. Optimal conventional and FT parameters were analyzed and then also applied to an external validation cohort of 222 STEMI patients. Circumferential strain (CS) was the strongest CMR-FT predictor and addition to LGE increased the overall accuracy to 74% and was especially relevant in segments with 50-74% LGE (AUC 0.60 vs. 0.75, p = 0.001). LDDSE increased the overall accuracy to 71%, and in the 50-74% LGE subgroup improved the AUC from 0.60 to 0.69 (p = 0.039). LGE + CS showed similar value as LGE + LDDSE. In the validation cohort, CS was also the strongest CMR-FT predictor of recovery and addition of CS to LGE improved overall accuracy to 73% although this difference was not significant (AUC 0.69, p = 0.44). Conclusion: CS is the strongest CMR-FT predictor of segmental functional recovery after STEMI. Its incremental value to LGE is comparable to that of LDDSE whilst avoiding an inotropic stress agent. CS is especially relevant in segments with 50-74% LGE where accuracy is lower and further testing is frequently required to clarify the potential for recovery. This research was supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and co-funded by Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) (grant numbers PI17/01836 and CIBERCV16/11/00486). Self-esteem and suicidal behaviour in youth: A meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
Background: Previous literature suggests that low self-esteem is a risk
factor for suicide attempts, but no meta-analyses have been conducted
to assess this association in adolescents/young adults. The present study
examined the relationship between low self-esteem and suicide attempts in
young people (12-26 years old). Method: Meta-analyses were performed
using random-effects models (ES) and odds ratio (OR). Heterogeneity and
sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: From 26,883 initial titles,
22 studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 9 studies had data that could
be included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed that youths
with lower self-esteem were more likely to have future suicide attempts,
with an effect size (self-esteem as continuous variable) of d = .58 (95% CI
= .44 - .73) and, for low self-esteem (categorical variable) an OR = 1.99
(95% CI = 1.39-2.86; p < .001). Conclusion: A low level of self-esteem is
a risk factor for suicide attempts in adolescents/young adults
