Teachers’ Perception in Writing Action Research in a Public Elementary School in the Philippines
Action research plays an important role in education. It enables teachers to discover what went wrong and what could be done to address classroom problems and issues. Consequently, it has now become one of the major professional development concerns for public school teachers in the Philippines. Teachers are encouraged by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to conduct a school-based action research as part of their performance appraisal and evaluation. In addition, it helps the teachers to explore innovative teaching strategies that will suit the needs of the learners. Although, there are promising benefits brought by research, it still remains a challenge among educators due to tight teaching work loads and ancillary roles performed by teachers.
To address this issue, the study aimed to assess the teachers’ perception in writing research based on their level of agreement. Its end goal is to help school administrators and education planners to develop capacity building that will help teachers to appreciate more the value of research. It utilized a quantitative-descriptive design. Fifteen (15) teachers were involved in the study that represented the 100% of the total population of the teaching force in the school. The main data-gathering instrument used was questionnaire. Computation of the weighted mean and ranking were employed in the statistical treatment of data. The results revealed that teachers strongly agreed on the basic principles of action research which signifies their knowledge and understanding of what research is all about. Continuous professional development is suggested to upgrade and strengthen teachers’ skills in writing educational research

PC-SPES for treatment of prostate cancer: herbal medicine.
The number of patients who seek treatment with complementary and alternative medicine has increased during the past decade. The trend is primarily driven by consumers who start to change their views toward conventional pharmaceutical approaches that are offered to them. Among all complementary and alternative therapies used in the management of prostate cancer, Prostate Cancer-SPES (PC-SPES) has attracted much national attention because of its potency, controversy, and recall by the US Food and Drug Administration. PC-SPES contains extracts from a mixture of eight common herbs that have been used for thousands of years. This article is devoted to reviewing the basic and clinical data of using PC-SPES in prostate cancer therapy. It also explores the difference in philosophies between Western medicine and herbal medicine and explains the inherent difficulties in evaluating herbal medicine. The article concludes that PC-SPES cannot be evaluated by the same standards established to test synthetic pharmaceutical compounds. Thus, new standards need to be developed for the evaluation of herbal medicine.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Effect of Hordeum vulgare, Moringa oleifera and Vitex negundo extracts on the hippocampus and memory of the Mus musculus
Herbal medicine such as Hordeum vulgare, Moringa oleifera and Vitex negundo are widely recognized around the world as dietary supplements, remedy for ailments and bodily sustenance. Moreover, studies have shown that intake these herbal medicines can have an effect in the memory retention in mice, however, no further studies have been conducted in comparing between Lagundi, Moringa and Barley and their optimal dosages on treatments for the effect of memory in mice. In this study, the mice were orally gavaged with three specific dosages (250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg and 750 mg/kg) of each herbal supplements, Barley, Moringa and Lagundi. The mice were then subjected to a 2- day water maze test and the neurological effects such as hippocampal reduction and degeneration were analyzed histologically. The result showed that in the Water Maze Test, all dosages of the different treatments showed no significant difference with the control group, therefore memory improvement or impairment was not shown during the maze test. In the histological analysis, however, it showed that Barley did not interfere with the hippocampal neurons the cells are within the normal limit and did not undergo cell degeneration. Moringa and Lagundi on the other hand, resulted to neurotropic effects of impaired hippocampal neurons with Lagundi causing more damage than Moringa
