Stern-Gerlach Entanglement in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

Entanglement of spin and position variables produced by spatially inhomogeneous magnetic fields of Stern-Gerlach type acting on spinor Bose-Einstein condensates may lead to interference effects at the level of one-boson densities. A model is worked out for these effects which is amenable to analytical calculation for gaussian shaped condensates. The resulting interference effects are sensitive to the spin polarization properties of the condensate.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

Coherence freeze in an optical lattice investigated via pump-probe spectroscopy

Motivated by our observation of fast echo decay and a surprising coherence freeze, we have developed a pump-probe spectroscopy technique for vibrational states of ultracold 85^{85}Rb atoms in an optical lattice to gain information about the memory dynamics of the system. We use pump-probe spectroscopy to monitor the time-dependent changes of frequencies experienced by atoms and to characterize the probability distribution of these frequency trajectories. We show that the inferred distribution, unlike a naive microscopic model of the lattice, correctly predicts the main features of the observed echo decay.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Coherent control of population transfer between vibrational states in an optical lattice via two-path quantum interference

We demonstrate coherent control of population transfer between vibrational states in an optical lattice by using interference between a one-phonon transition at 2ω2\omega and a two-phonon transition at ω\omega. The ω\omega and 2ω2\omega transitions are driven by phase- and amplitude-modulation of the lattice laser beams, respectively. By varying the relative phase between these two pathways, we control the branching ratio of transitions to the first excited state and to the higher states. Our best result shows an improvement of the branching ratio by a factor of 3.5±\pm0.7. Such quantum control techniques may find broad application in suppressing leakage errors in a variety of quantum information architectures.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Static circularly symmetric perfect fluid solutions with an exterior BTZ metric

In this work we study static perfect fluid stars in 2+1 dimensions with an exterior BTZ spacetime. We found the general expression for the metric coefficients as a function of the density and pressure of the fluid. We found the conditions to have regularity at the origin throughout the analysis of a set of linearly independent invariants. We also obtain an exact solution of the Einstein equations, with the corresponding equation of state p=p(ρ)p=p(\rho), which is regular at the origin.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, revtex 4. Pattern formation on the surface of cationic-anionic cylindrical aggregates

Charged pattern formation on the surfaces of self--assembled cylindrical micelles formed from oppositely charged heterogeneous molecules such as cationic and anionic peptide amphiphiles is investigated. The net incompatibility χ\chi among different components results in the formation of segregated domains, whose growth is inhibited by electrostatics. The transition to striped phases proceeds through an intermediate structure governed by fluctuations, followed by states with various lamellar orientations, which depend on cylinder radius RcR_c and χ\chi. We analyze the specific heat, susceptibility S(q)S(q^*), domain size Λ=2π/q\Lambda=2\pi/q^* and morphology as a function of RcR_c and χ\chi.Comment: Sent to PRL 11Jan05 Transferred from PRL to PRE 10Jun0
