Automotive Stirling engine development program
The major accomplishments were the completion of the Basic Stirling Engine (BSE) and the Stirling Engine System (SES) designs on schedule, the approval and acceptance of those designs by NASA, and the initiation of manufacture of BSE components. The performance predictions indicate the Mod II engine design will meet or exceed the original program goals of 30% improvement in fuel economy over a conventional Internal Combustion (IC) powered vehicle, while providing acceptable emissions. This was accomplished while simultaneously reducing Mod II engine weight to a level comparable with IC engine power density, and packaging the Mod II in a 1985 Celebrity with no external sheet metal changes. The projected mileage of the Mod II Celebrity for the combined urban and highway CVS cycle is 40.9 mpg which is a 32% improvement over the IC Celebrity. If additional potential improvements are verified and incorporated in the Mod II, the mileage could increase to 42.7 mpg
Automotive Stirling engine development program
This is the ninth Semiannual Technical Progress Report prepared under the Automotive Stirling Engine Development Program. It covers the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth quarters of activity after award of the contract. Quarterly Technical Progress Reports related program activities from the first through the thirteenth quarters; thereafter, reporting was changed to a Semiannual format. This report summarizes the study of higher-power kinematic Stirling engines for transportation use, development testing of Mod I Stirling engines, and component development activities. Component development testing included successful conical fuel nozzle testing and functional checkout of Mod II controls and auxiliaries on Mod I engine test beds. Overall program philosophy is outlined and data and test results are presented
Wearable devices with two stage of use
A two-statewearable device may include a wearable band (e.g., a watch band) and a displaymodule (e.g. ̧ a watch face).In a "detached" state, the wearable band and display module act as separate devices, and the display module can be charging its battery while the wearable band gathers sensor data (e.g., sleep tracking data) and provides a vibrating/audio alarm clock function. In an "attached" state, the wearable band and display module act together as a single device, meaning that the data collected by the wearable band during the "detached" state is sent to and stored at the display module, and that sleep settings input at a user interface of the display module impact the wearable band's alarm function. The display module may also use its newly-recharged battery to recharge the wearable band's battery so that it can be used the next night.</p
Possible Signature of Low Scale Gravity in Ultra High Enegry Cosmic Rays
We show that the existence of low scale gravity at TeV scale could lead to a
direct production of photons with energies above 10^22 eV due to annihilation
of ultra high energy neutrinos on relic massive neutrinos of the galactic halo.
Air showers initialized in the terrestrial atmosphere by these ultra energetic
photons could be collected in near future by the new generation of cosmic ray

Automotive Stirling Engine Development Program
Development test activities on Mod I engines directed toward evaluating technologies for potential inclusion in the Mod II engine are summarized. Activities covered include: test of a 12-tube combustion gas recirculation combustor; manufacture and flow-distribution test of a two-manifold annular heater head; piston rod/piston base joint; single-solid piston rings; and a digital air/fuel concept. Also summarized are results of a formal assessment of candidate technologies for the Mod II engine, and preliminary design work for the Mod II. The overall program philosophy weight is outlined, and data and test results are presented
Neutral Pions with Large Transverse Momentum in d+Au and Au+Au Collisions
Measurements of transverse-momentum p_T spectra of neutral pions in Au+Au and
d+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=200 GeV and 62.4 GeV by the PHENIX experiment at
RHIC in comparison to p+p reference spectra at the same sqrt{s_NN} are
presented. In central Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=200 GeV a factor 4-5
suppression for neutral pions and charged hadrons with p_T > 5 GeV/c is found
relative to the p+p reference scaled by the nuclear overlap function .
In contrast, such a suppression of high-p_T particles is absent in d+Au
collisions independent of the centrality of the collision. To study the
sqrt{s_NN} dependence of the suppression Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=200 GeV

On the Origin of the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays
We present the results of a new estimation of the photodisintegration and
propagation of ultrahigh energy cosmic ray (UHCR) nuclei in intergalactic
space. The critical interactions for photodisintegration and energy loss of
UHCR nuclei occur with photons of the infrared background radiation (IBR). We
have reexamined this problem making use of a new determination of the IBR based
on empirical data, primarily from IRAS galaxies, and also collateral
information from TeV gamma-ray observations of two nearby BL Lac objects. Our
results indicate that a 200 EeV Fe nucleus can propagate apx. 100 Mpc through
the IBR. We argue that it is possible that the highest energy cosmic rays
observed may be heavy nuclei.Comment: 2 pages revtex with one figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Cronin Effect at Different Rapidities at RHIC
Calculations of the nuclear modification factor, R_dAu, for pi^0 production
in dAu collisions at s_NN^1/2 = 200 GeV are presented. The applied
pQCD-improved parton model incorporates intrinsic k_T. Nuclear multiscattering
and nuclear shadowing are considered in the Au nucleus. Theoretical results are
displayed for midrapidity and high pseudorapidity (eta), and compared to

An electron Talbot interferometer
The Talbot effect, in which a wave imprinted with transverse periodicity
reconstructs itself at regular intervals, is a diffraction phenomenon that
occurs in many physical systems. Here we present the first observation of the
Talbot effect for electron de Broglie waves behind a nanofabricated
transmission grating. This was thought to be difficult because of Coulomb
interactions between electrons and nanostructure gratings, yet we were able to
map out the entire near-field interference pattern, the "Talbot carpet", behind
a grating. We did this using a Talbot interferometer, in which Talbot
interference fringes from one grating are moire'-filtered by a 2nd grating.
This arrangement has served for optical, X-ray, and atom interferometry, but
never before for electrons. Talbot interferometers are particularly sensitive
to distortions of the incident wavefronts, and to illustrate this we used our
Talbot interferometer to measure the wavefront curvature of a weakly focused
electron beam. Here we report how this wavefront curvature demagnified the
Talbot revivals, and we discuss applications for electron Talbot
