    A conformal field theory description of the paired and parafermionic states in the quantum Hall effect

    We extend the construction of the effective conformal field theory for the Jain hierarchical fillings proposed in cond-mat/9912287 to the description of a quantum Hall fluid at non standard fillings nu=m/(pm+2). The chiral primary fields are found by using a procedure which induces twisted boundary conditions on the m scalar fields; they appear as composite operators of a charged and neutral component. The neutral modes describe parafermions and contribute to the ground state wave function with a generalized Pfaffian term.     Dissipative quantum mechanics and Kondo-like impurities on noncommutative two-tori

    In a recent paper, by exploiting the notion of Morita equivalence for field theories on noncommutative tori and choosing rational values of the noncommutativity parameter Ξ\theta (in appropriate units), a general one-to-one correspondence between the mm-reduced conformal field theory (CFT) describing a quantum Hall fluid (QHF) at paired states fillings Μ=mpm+2\nu =% \frac{m}{pm+2} and an Abelian noncommutative field theory (NCFT) has been established . That allowed us to add new evidence to the relationship between noncommutativity and quantum Hall fluids\cite% {ncmanybody}. On the other hand, the mm-reduced CFT is equivalent to a system of two massless scalar bosons with a magnetic boundary interaction as introduced by Callan et al., at the so called ``magic''\ points. We are then able to describe, within such a framework, the dissipative quantum mechanics of a particle confined to a plane and subject to an external magnetic field normal to it. Here we develop such a point of view by focusing on the case m=2m=2 which corresponds to a quantum Hall bilayer. The key role of a localized impurity which couples the two layers is emphasized and the effect of noncommutativity in terms of generalized magnetic translations (GMT) is fully exploited. As a result, general GMT operators are introduced, in the form of a tensor product, which act on the QHF and defect space respectively, and a comprehensive study of their rich structure is performed.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in International Journal of Modern Physics

    We construct an effective conformal field theory by using a procedure which induces twisted boundary conditions for the fundamental scalar fields. That allows to describe a quantum Hall fluid at Jain hierarchical filling, nu=m/(2pm+1), in terms of one charged scalar field and m-1 neutral ones. Then the resulting algebra of the chiral primary fields is U(1)xW_m.     A conformal field theory description of magnetic flux fractionalization in Josephson junction ladders

    We show how the recently proposed effective theory for a Quantum Hall system at "paired states" filling v=1 (Mod. Phys. Lett. A 15 (2000) 1679; Nucl. Phys. B641 (2002) 547), the twisted model (TM), well adapts to describe the phenomenology of Josephson Junction ladders (JJL) in the presence of defects. In particular it is shown how naturally the phenomenon of flux fractionalization takes place in such a description and its relation with the discrete symmetries present in the TM. Furthermore we focus on closed geometries, which enable us to analyze the topological properties of the ground state of the system in relation to the presence of half flux quanta.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure, Latex, revised versio

    We propose a CFT description for a closed one-dimensional fully frustrated ladder of quantum Josephson junctions with Mobius boundary conditions, in particular we show how such a system can develop topological order.     The issue of the number, nature and sequence of phase transitions in the fully frustrated XY (FFXY) model is a highly non trivial one due to the complex interplay between its continuous and discrete degrees of freedom.     Total thyroidectomy associated to chemotherapy in primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid

    Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid (PSCCT) is a rare malignant disease with rapid fatal prognosis. The onset is generally characterized by sudden bilateral latero-cervical lymphadenopathy. The Authors report patient of 58-year-old who referred for evaluation of rapidly aggravating bilateral latero-cervical lymphadenopathy. The US highlighted the presence of a hypoechoic nodular lesion characterized by peri and intra-nodular vascularization. Multilayer CT showed diffused involvement of mediastinal and bilateral latero-cervical lymph nodes, with no evidence of primary pulmonary neoplasia or elsewhere. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy. The peri-isthmic tissue was removed due to the presence of a small roundish formation, that was due to lymph node metastasis at histological examination. Histological diagnosis: PSCCT. The immunohistochemical panel of the thyroid lesion was indispensable for the differential diagnosis between PSCCT, medullary carcinoma, anaplastic carcinoma, and thyroid metastasis of neoplasia with unknown primitiveness. The patient underwent chemotherapeutic treatment with Carboplatin and Paclitaxel with modest improvement of dysphagia symptoms and reduction of 10-15% of the target lesions. The clinical course was characterized by loco-regional progression of the disease with exitus in 10 months after diagnosis. Survival and quality of life after surgical therapy and chemotherapy were like that of patients undergoing only chemotherapy. Due to the extreme rarity of the neoplasia, 60 cases described in Literature, no exclusive guidelines are reported for PSCCT. More extensive case studies are needed to evaluate the effects of total thyroidectomy with intent R0/R1 on improving survival and quality of life of patients with PSCCT

    Conformal Symmetry and Universal Properties of Quantum Hall States

    The low-lying excitations of a quantum Hall state on a disk geometry are edge excitations. Their dynamics is governed by a conformal field theory on the cylinder defined by the disk boundary and the time variable. We give a simple and detailed derivation of this conformal field theory for integer filling, starting from the microscopic dynamics of (2+1)(2+1)-dimensional non-relativistic electrons in Landau levels. This construction can be generalized to describe Laughlin's fractional Hall states via chiral bosonization, thereby making contact with the effective Chern-Simons theory approach. The conformal field theory dictates the finite-size effects in the energy spectrum. An experimental or numerical verification of these universal effects would provide a further confirmation of Laughlin's theory of incompressible quantum fluids.Comment: 39 pages, 7 figures (not included, they are mailed on request), harvmac CERN-TH 6702/9

    CFT description of the Fully Frustrated XY model and phase diagram analysis

    Following a suggestion given in Nucl. Phys. B 300 (1988)611,we show how the U(1)*Z_{2} symmetry of the fully frustrated XY (FFXY) model on a square lattice can be accounted for in the framework of the m-reduction procedure developed for a Quantum Hall system at "paired states" fillings nu =1 (cfr. Cristofano et al.,Mod. Phys. Lett. A 15 (2000)1679;Nucl. Phys. B 641 (2002)547). The resulting twisted conformal field theory (CFT) with central charge c=2 is shown to well describe the physical properties of the FFXY model. In particular the whole phase diagram is recovered by analyzing the flow from the Z_{2} degenerate vacuum of the c=2 CFT to the infrared fixed point unique vacuum of the c=3/2 CFT. The last theory is known to successfully describe the critical behavior of the system at the overlap temperature for the Ising and vortex-unbinding transitions.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure, to appear in JSTA

    Infinite Symmetry in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

    We have generalized recent results of Cappelli, Trugenberger and Zemba on the integer quantum Hall effect constructing explicitly a W1+∞{\cal W}_{1+\infty} for the fractional quantum Hall effect such that the negative modes annihilate the Laughlin wave functions. This generalization has a nice interpretation in Jain's composite fermion theory. Furthermore, for these models we have calculated the wave functions of the edge excitations viewing them as area preserving deformations of an incompressible quantum droplet, and have shown that the W1+∞{\cal W}_{1+\infty} is the underlying symmetry of the edge excitations in the fractional quantum Hall effect.
