The “Emerging Unconventional Plants for Derived Food Products and Ingredients”
Frontiers in Nutrition Research Topic aimed to address innovative solutions to ensure food
security, such as nutrient-rich alternatives, sustainable agriculture, and advanced industrial
technologies, by exploring Unconventional Edible Plants for developing new, nutritious,
and safer food products. This Topic falls in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda,
driven by societal, economic, and environmental factors, to eliminate world hunger and
poverty. Research on sustainable agriculture, nutritional profiling, and innovative food
development holds promise in integrating these unconventional plants into daily base diets
worldwide, a perspective that has been shared in academia, not only for food purposes (1)
but also medicine (2). The present Research Topic gathered 41 authors from China, Israel,
India, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia that provided in-depth scientific knowledge regarding the
potentiality of unconventional plants to be applied as functional ingredients in food and
pharmaceutical formulations. The use of Unconventional Plants has been carried out for
hundreds of years by local populations, who, knowing their attributes, use them in their
daily lives for various purposes. By applying state of the art technologies and methodologies
in the studies mentioned above, we have clear examples of the practicality of this topic at
an economic level, but above all at a social level. The author(s) declare financial support was received for

This experience report summarizes the activities developed in an University Extension Project, held in six online meetings organized by servers of a technological educational institution, students and people from the external community. The proposal was a demand of students who participated in presential modality of the referred project. We aim to promote Yoga as a healthy exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, through weekly practices whose themes were pointed out by the group during the meetings: what is Yoga; concentration; learning; positivity; Yoga at work; the importance of breathing. Registration and classes were carried out in virtual platforms with open access to the community. The registration form allowed to outline the health habits and perceptions of the participants regarding the pandemic moment and their expectations in relation to Yoga. We present the development process, the records of each meeting and the reflections on this extension activity. The results indicated that Yoga is an important element for extension activities, as it promoted a healthy action, bringing servers, students, and the external community closer together in a unique context of illness.
Women in primary health care: physical exercise, lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors
Lifestyle disorders are related to inappropriate habits. Exercise programs can reduce the risk of to be affected by them. To evaluate and compare the effects of two programs on some of the parameters that determine the health of women attended at a Unidade Básica de Saúde (community health center), 54 women aged from 40 to 80 were grouped together into two groups: G1 (n = 26) to exercise the standard program (walking) and G2 (n = 28) to do the exercises of an alternative program (calisthenics + walking). The sessions for sixty minutes occurred four times a week for 16 weeks. The G1 and G2 participants exhibited loses (p <0.05) weight, reduced their body mass index, body fat percentage and blood pressure, as well as higher speed and higher oxygen consumption. G1 exhibited reduced diastolic blood pressure, increased forced vital capacity, and reduced cholesterol. G2 showed reduction of the total cholesterol level, the triglycerides levels and the VLDL. Our conclusion is that the programs showed similar positive results, in spite of superiority of the results presented by G2. However, they did not reduce cardiovascular risk

Quality assessment of jabuticabas (cv. sabará), submitted to refrigerated storage and conditioned in different packaging

ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest
Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest.
