    The Bond Between a Horse and a Human

    The bond that exists between a horse and human was examined using EEG from the horse and human simultaneously. Three volunteers ranging from novice to elite horse experience participated with an unfamiliar horse. The elite participant was also recorded with her own horse. A dose-response effect was tested using 6 conditions requiring increasing interaction between the horse and human (baseline - apart, standing together, petting, grooming, sitting, and riding). EEG was recorded from 10 locations on the horse and the human. EEG brain maps illustrated that increasing interaction between the horse and human showed more synchronous EEG. The elite horse person showed greater synchronization with her own familiar horse. Perhaps these findings illustrate the bond that exists between horses and humans

    Analytical and experimental investigation of fatigue in a sheet specimen with an interference-fit bolt

    A fatigue analysis, based on finite-element calculations and fatigue tests, was conducted for an aluminum-alloy sheet specimen with a steel interference-fit bolt. The stress analysis of the region near the bolt hole showed that the beneficial effect of an interference-fit bolt can be interpreted as the combined result of two effects: (1) load transfer through the bolt and (2) the compressive interference stresses in the sheet. Results of the fatigue tests show that progressively higher interference levels produced longer fatigue lives. The tests also show that a high level of interference prevents fretting at the bolt-sheet interface and that interferences larger than this level produced little additional improvement in fatigue life

    An elastoplastic analysis of a uniaxially loaded sheet with an interference-fit bolt

    The stresses and strains in a uniaxially loaded sheet with an unloaded interference-fit bolt were calculated by an elastoplastic finite-element analysis. The material properties represented a 7075-T6 aluminum alloy sheet and a steel bolt. The analysis considered the two ideal cases of no slip and no friction at the bolt-sheet interface for a single combination of bolt diameter, interference level, and cyclic loading. When the bolt was inserted, the sheet deformed plastically near the hole; the first tensile load cycle produced additional yielding, but subsequent cycles to the same level caused only elastic cyclic stresses. These stresses together with fatigue data for unnotched specimens were used to estimate crack initiation periods and initiation sites. The cases analyzed with interference-fit bolts were predicted to have crack initiation periods which were about 50 times that for a clearance-fit bolt. Crack initiation was predicted to occur on the transverse axis at a distance of about one radius from the hole

    A hypervelocity impact shield and method for protecting a wall structure, such as a spacecraft wall, from impact with particles of debris having densities of about 2.7 g/cu cm and impact velocities up to 16 km/s are disclosed. The shield comprises a stack of ultra thin sheets of impactor disrupting material supported and arranged by support means in spaced relationship to one another and mounted to cover the wall in a position for intercepting the particles. The sheets are of a number and spacing such that the impacting particle and the resulting particulates of the impacting particle and sheet material are successively impact-shocked to a thermal state of total melt and/or vaporization to a degree as precludes perforation of the wall. The ratio of individual sheet thickness to the theoretical diameter of particles of debris which may be of spherical form is in the range of 0.03 to 0.05. The spacing between adjacent sheets is such that the debris cloud plume of liquid and vapor resulting from an impacting particle penetrating a sheet does not puncture the next adjacent sheet prior to the arrival thereat of fragment particulates of sheet material and the debris particle produced by a previous impact

    Failure to detect "cap" structures in mitochondrial DNA-coded poly(A)-containing RNA from HeLa cells

    The structure of the 5'-termini has been investigated in mitochondrial DNA- coded poly(A)-containing RNA from HeLa cells. For this purpose, mitochondrial RNA isolated from cells labeled for 3 hours with [32P]orthophosphate in the presence of 20 ”g/ml camptothecin, and selected for poly(A) content by two passages through oligo(dT)-cellulose, was digested either with the nuclease P1 or with a mixture of RNases: the digestion products were then fractionated by two-dimensional electrophoresis. No "cap" structures were detected under conditions where the presence of such structures in one out of five to ten RNA molecules would have been recognized. It is, therefore, likely that "cap" structures are completely absent in HeLa cell mitochondrial poly(A)-containing RNA
