Finding footy : female fan socialization and Australian rules football

The question of how, irrespective of gender, a person becomes a sports fan has been absent in sociological studies of sports supporters. Distinct from other studies of sport spectatorship that focus on the practices of already existing (and overwhelmingly male) fans, our research is the first to consider how women become supporters, and in doing so, it begins to redress the significant under-representation of women in sports fan research. From interviews with female supporters of the Australian Football League (AFL), this article identifies and critically assesses the modes by which women come to support sport. We propose four categories to explain the different ways women accomplish fandom, focusing on the importance of strong social ties and doxic actions in this process. The events, experiences and social relations that inform women\u27s first encounters with AFL offers a template for the wider consideration of women as social agents in the sporting landscape

Fitting in on Campus

This chapter draws on mature-age male students’ experience of embarking upon university life. Transition processes and a shift in identity are considered initially and the ways in which these are experienced across men’s experience, given their diversity, are reflected upon. Their decisions, feelings and circumstances around living arrangements; financial constraints and support; family commitments; experience of university orientation/induction; fitting in and making friends at university, and their relationships with staff are all heard. The ways in which these accounts intersect with men’s age, circumstance and orientation to study are highlighted. Research on the importance of students’ feeling a sense of belonging within the university and being accepted by both peers and tutors is drawn on at the chapter’s conclusion

Induction voltage adders and the induction accelerator family

Induction voltage adders (IVA) and induction accelerators of various types are described and their principles and advantages are discussed. The designs and technologies used in the various subsections and components of high-current IVAs are described. Some features of the pulse power that drives IVAs are discussed. Two representative high-current IVAs are briefly described, and characteristics of other IVAs with different features are mentioned. Some other IVA and induction accelerator variants that could be considered are also suggested
