    Spin Hall Conductance of the Two Dimensional Hole Gas in a Perpendicular Magnetic Field

    The charge and spin Hall conductance of the two-dimensional hole gas within the Luttinger model with and without inversion symmetry breaking terms in a perpendicular magnetic field are studied, and two key phenomena are predicted. The sign of the spin Hall conductance is modulated periodically by the external magnetic field, which means a possible application in the future. Furthermore, a resonant spin Hall conductance in the two-dimensional hole gas with a certain hole density at a typical magnetic field is indicated, which implies a likely way to firmly establish the intrinsic spin Hall effect. Europe would be better off keeping these manufacturing activities, slowing down wage inflation and what is more, letting a young, cheaper workforce from the East settle down within their borders. This would aid in preserving the diverse economic structure which has been characteristic for Europe.Beside the economic growth there are two more concepts which have turned into the “holy cows” of economics during the last fifty years. One is the need to constantly improve labor productivity and the other is increasing competitiveness of nations. The high labor productivity of some countries, induces severe unemployment in the globalized world. In the other hand it is high time we understood that it is not competition, but cooperation that brings more happiness to humanity.Should we still opt for “happiness” and “sanity”, it is quite obvious that we all should, in economists’ terms, define our individual welfare functions corresponding to our own set of values, staying free from the influence of media, advertisements and fashion. The cornerstone to all this is the intelligent citizen who prefers local goods and services

    The Speed of Cooling Fronts and the Functional Form of the Dimensionless Viscosity in Accretion Disks

    We examine the speed of inward traveling cooling fronts in accretion disks. We show that their speed is determined by the rarefaction wave that precedes them and is approximately αFcF(H/r)q\alpha_F c_{F} (H/r)^q, where αF\alpha_F is the dimensionless viscosity, cFc_{F} is the sound speed, rr is the radial coordinate, HH is the disk thickness, and all quantities are evaluated at the cooling front. The scaling exponent qq lies in the interval [0,1][0,1], depending on the slope of the (T,ÎŁ)(T,\Sigma) relation in the hot state. For a Kramer's law opacity and α∝(H/r)n\alpha\propto (H/r)^n, where nn is of order unity, we find that q∌1/2q\sim 1/2. This supports the numerical work of Cannizzo, Chen and Livio (1995) and their conclusion that n≈3/2n\approx3/2 is necessary to reproduce the exponential decay of luminosity in black hole X-ray binary systems. Our results are insensitive to the structure of the disk outside of the radius where rapid cooling sets in. In particular, the width of the rapid cooling zone is a consequence of the cooling front speed rather than its cause. We conclude that the exponential luminosity decay of cooling disks is probably compatible with the wave-driven dynamo model. It is not compatible with models with separate, constant values of α\alpha for the hot and cold states.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figur

    After ten years, Georgia continues to lead the nation in providing full day, publicly subsidized Pre-K to four-year-olds whose parents choose to enroll them. In this report, we assess the extent to which differences in the way Pre-K is implemented affect children's development. Do teachers with higher levels of education have more positive impacts on children's development? Do teaching styles make a difference in terms of children's outcomes by the end of kindergarten? Do children taught using certain curricula fare better than those taught using others? Answers to questions such as these can assist Pre-K administrators in refining Georgia's program and inform those in other states who are developing or expanding their prekindergarten programs

    The ferroelectric transition in YMnO3_3 from first principles

    We have studied the structural phase transition of multiferroic YMnO3_3 from first principles. Using group-theoretical analysis and first-principles density functional calculations of the total energy and phonons, we perform a systematic study of the energy surface around the prototypic phase. We find a single instability at the zone-boundary which couples strongly to the polarization. This coupling is the mechanism that allows multiferroicity in this class of materials.     The LWA1 Radio Telescope

    LWA1 is a new radio telescope operating in the frequency range 10-88 MHz, located in central New Mexico. The telescope consists of 258 pairs of dipole-type antennas whose outputs are individually digitized and formed into beams. Simultaneously, signals from all dipoles can be recorded using one of the instrument's "all dipoles" modes, facilitating all-sky imaging. Notable features of the instrument include high intrinsic sensitivity (about 6 kJy zenith system equivalent flux density), large instantaneous bandwidth (up to 78 MHz), and 4 independently-steerable beams utilizing digital "true time delay" beamforming. This paper summarizes the design of LWA1 and its performance as determined in commissioning experiments.
