Examining Childrens Perceptions Of Parent-Adolescent Communication Quality, Consumption Interaction, And Shopping Enjoyment

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study is to examine the influence of family communication patterns on parent-adolescent consumption interaction and adolescent shopping enjoyment. The present study utilizes survey responses from 263 high school students and 338 junior high school students. Results from each sample indicate that communication quality between parents and their adolescent children impacts the consumption interaction taking place between the parents and their children. Additionally, results indicate that mothers are more likely to positively influence adolescent shopping enjoyment as compared to fathers

Examining Minor League Baseball Season Ticket Buyersā€™ Perceptions and Behaviors

    Get PDF
Minor League Baseball attracts over 40 million fans every year. Minor League Baseball owners and general managers spend countless hours attempting to determine the most important factors motivating fans to purchase tickets for games. The present study seeks to examine Minor League Baseball season ticket buyers through two different research study methods, and at two distinct levels of Minor League Baseball. Results from both surveys and in-depth interviews suggest that family involvement, low-cost entertainment, and social interactions were motivating factors in season ticket purchases

Functional Stomata of the Atmospheric Epiphyte Tillandsia Usneoides L.

This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from: http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/2474260.Although stomatal opening in Tillandsia usneoides is not detectable by light microscopy, the guard cells swell in the dark and in the light in buffers known to stimulate stomatal opening. Abscisic acid or phenylmercuric acetate substantially reduced subsequent nocturnal C 0 2 uptake. Potassium ions were more concentrated in the guard cells in the dark than in the light. The stomata of this CAM epiphyte appear functional: open at night and closed throughout most of the day

Crassulacean Acid Metabolism in Three Species of the C4 Genus Portulaca

The putative existence of Crassulacean acid metabolism was investigated in three succulent species of the C4 genus Portulaca: P. grandiflora (a widely cultivated species), P. oleracea (a cosmopolitan weed), and P. mundula (found on rock outcrops throughout the southwestern United States). Patterns of diurnal conductance and CO2 exchange, as well as diurnal tissue malic acid fluctuations, were measured in plants under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. Net CO2 uptake in both treatments occurred only during the day, although small amounts of nighttime CO2 uptake occurred in a few individuals. Stomatal conductances in well-watered and drought-stressed P. mundula and drought-stressed P. oleracea were higher during the night than during the day, though these higher conductances were generally not accompanied by net CO2 assimilation. No significant diurnal malic acid fluctuations occurred under well-watered conditions in any species; however, under drought stress, significant diurnal malic acid fluctuations occurred in the three species. The primary source of carbon for nocturnal malic acid production is presumed to be respiratory CO2, as occurs in C3 plants that undergo CAM-cycling. This study confirms past reports of CAM acid fluctuations in P. grandiflora and P. oleracea and marks the first report of CAM activity in P. mundul

    Psychopathy, adaptation, and disorder

In a recent study, we found a negative association between psychopathy and violence against genetic relatives. We interpreted this result as a form of nepotism and argued that it failed to support the hypothesis that psychopathy is a mental disorder, suggesting instead that it supports the hypothesis that psychopathy is an evolved life history strategy. This interpretation and subsequent arguments have been challenged in a number of ways. Here, we identify several misunderstandings regarding the harmful dysfunction definition of mental disorder as it applies to psychopathy and regarding the meaning of nepotism. Furthermore, we examine the evidence provided by our critics that psychopathy is associated with other disorders, and we offer a comment on their alternative model of psychopathy. We conclude that there remains little evidence that psychopathy is the product of dysfunctional mechanisms

ESTIMATING THE VALUE OF BT CORN: A MULTI-STATE COMPARISON

Bt corn offers a powerful tool to control European corn borers and some other pests. Because pest infestations and farming practices differ across the Corn Belt, economic benefits also differ. This research estimates the value of Bt corn across the Corn Belt. Results identify areas where Bt adoption is economically justified.Crop Production/Industries, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

Effects of Irradiance on Crassulacean Acid Metabolism in the Epiphyte Tillandsia usneoides L. (Bromeliaceae)

This is the publisher's version, also electronically available from: http://www.plantphysiol.org/content/80/1/23.full.pdf+html.Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides L.) was collected in South Carolina, maintained in a greenhouse, then exposed to five levels of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) for 3 weeks. Following this treatment, plants were sampled for chlorophyll concentrations, nocturnal acid accumulations, and photosynthetic responses to subsequent exposure at a range of PPFD. No acclimation to PPFD was observed; all plants exhibited similar patterns of nocturnal C02 uptake and acid accumulation regardless of initial PPFD treatment. These patterns revealed that at a PPFD level of approximately 200 micromoles per square meter per second (daytime integrated PPFD of 10 moles per square meter per day), CAM saturated or, in low-PPFD plants, was optimal. The results of this study indicate that adaptation to high PPFD is not necessarily a requirement of CAM

Government-Industry Cooperative Fisheries Research in the North Pacific under the MSFCMA

    Get PDF
The National Marine Fisheries Serviceā€™s Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) has a long and successful history of conducting research in cooperation with the fishing industry. Many of the AFSCā€™s annual resource assessment surveys are carried out aboard chartered commercial vessels and the skill and experience of captains and crew are integral to the success of this work. Fishing companies have been contracted to provide vessels and expertise for many different types of research, including testing and evaluation of survey and commercial fishing gear and development of improved methods for estimating commercial catch quantity and composition. AFSC scientists have also participated in a number of industry-initiated research projects including development of selective fishing gears for bycatch reduction and evaluating and improving observer catch composition sampling. In this paper, we describe the legal and regulatory provisions for these types of cooperative work and present examples to illustrate the process and identify the requirements for successful cooperative research
