InfoVis experience enhancement through mediated interaction
Information visualization is an experience in which both the aesthetic representations and interaction are part. Such an experience can be augmented through close consideration of its major components. Interaction is crucial to the experience, yet it has seldom been adequately explored in the field. We claim that direct mediated interaction can augment such an experience. This paper discusses the reasons behind such a claim and proposes a mediated interactive manipulation scheme based on the notion of directness. It also describes the ways in which such a claim will be validated. The Literature Knowledge Domain (LKD) is used as the concrete domain around which the discussions will be held
A radical cascade approach to the skeleton of α−Cyclopiazonic Acid
3-Nitrophthalic acid 2.04 was transformed into 2.10 in 38% yield. Vinylglycine
derivative was synthesised from D-Methionine 2.12 in 42% yield.

Compounds 2.10 and 2.16 were coupled using Grubbs’ 2nd generation catalyst
creating 2.25. Unfortunately attempts to oxidise the benzylic position were
unsuccessful.

An alternative approach was investigated using diene 2.40 derived from a precursor to
2.10 and allyl bromide 2.35. Attempts to displace bromide under anionic conditions
were futile. The use of palladium formed conjugated dieneamine 2.65.

Deprotection, oxidation and elaboration of 2.10 prior to cross metathesis allowed the
synthesis of 2.114, which when subjected to radical conditions, formed a
diastereomeric mixture of 2.220.

Measuring the adaptation goal in the global stocktake of the Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement establishes a global goal on adaptation which will be assessed through the global stocktake, the first attempt by the international climate change regime to measure collective progress on adaptation. This policy analysis identifies four main challenges to designing a meaningful assessment. These are: designing a system that can aggregate results; managing the dual mandate of reviewing collective progress and informing the enhancement of national level actions; methodological challenges in adaptation; and political challenges around measurement. We propose a mixed-methods approach to addressing these challenges, combining short-term needs for reporting with longer-term aims of enhancing national adaptation actions
The Larva, Pupa and Female of Agapetus jocassee Morse (Trichoptera: Glossosomatidae)
Agapetus jocassee is a Species of Concern on the lists of the U.S.D.I. Fish and Wildlife Service because it is known from only three streams of the Lake Jocassee catchment in Oconee and Transylvania counties, South and North Carolina. To assist in solving identification problems and to contribute to knowledge of the distribution of this species, larvae and pupae of A. jocassee were collected from mountain streams in North and South Carolina, reared to adulthood and identified. The larva, pupa, and female of the species are described for the first time. Characters were found in those ontogenetic stages that distinguish this species from other Agapetus species whose immature stages and females are known. The species was collected from two streams other than the type localities, suggesting that it may be more widely distributed in streams of the Blue Ridge Escarpment than previously thought
An Examination Of Global Market Segmentation Bases And Strategic Positioning Decisions
This paper examines the conceptual linkages between global segmentation strategy and brand positioning from the perspective of firms operating in increasingly globalized markets. The manuscript suggests the combined use of macro/country-level as well as micro/behavioral-level bases of segmentation in order to leverage similar strategic positioning across global markets. The analysis presented paves the way for embarking on future research to enrich the academic understanding and managerial practice of linking global segmentation with strategic positioning decisions

Thinking’ as central to creativity in young children’s learning, this paper considers
question-posing and question-responding as the driving features of ‘Possibility
Thinking’ (PT). This qualitative study employed micro-event analysis of peer and
pupil–teacher interaction. Events were sampled from two early years settings in
England, one a Reception classroom (4- to 5-year olds) and the other a Year 2
classroom (6- to 7-year olds). This article arises out of the second stage of an ongoing
research programme (2004–2007) involving the children and practitioners in these
settings. This phase considers the dimensions of question-posing and the categories of
question-responding and their interrelationship within PT. Three dimensions of
questioning were identified as characteristic of PT. These included: (i) question
framing, reflecting the purpose inherent within questions for adults and children
(including leading, service and follow-through questions); (ii) question degree:
manifestation of the degree of possibility inherent in children’s questions (including
possibility narrow, possibility moderate, possibility broad); (iii) question modality,
manifestation of the modality inherent in children’s questions (including verbal and
non-verbal forms). The fine-grained data analysis offers insight into how children
engage in PT to meet specific needs in responding to creative tasks and activities and
reveals the crucial role that question-posing and question-responding play in creative
learning. It also provides more detail about the nature of young children’s thinking,
made visible through question-posing and responding in engaging playful contexts
Basal metabolic rate as a potential determinant in risk sensitive foraging.
In foraging, there are many possible determinants of an individual’s sensitivity to risk, such as an animal’s learning or various biological imperatives. However, few studies on risk sensitivity incorporate information about an animal’s metabolism. One measure of metabolic rate is basal metabolic rate (BMR), or the minimum rate at which metabolism must produce energy to maintain homeostasis, which is highly plastic. Therefore, we investigated a potential relationship between risk sensitivity and BMR. This metaanalysis revealed little to no relationship between BMR and risk sensitivity, perhaps because of the high intraspecific variation of each of these traits
“I just want to be skinny.”: A content analysis of tweets expressing eating disorder symptoms
There is increasing concern about online communities that promote eating disorder (ED) behaviors through messages and/or images that encourage a “thin ideal” (i.e., promotion of thinness as attractive) and harmful weight loss/weight control practices. The purpose of this paper is to assess the content of body image and ED-related content on Twitter and provide a deeper understanding of EDs that may be used for future studies and online-based interventions. Tweets containing ED or body image-related keywords were collected from January 1-January 31, 2015 (N = 28,642). A random sample (n = 3000) was assessed for expressions of behaviors that align with subscales of the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) 16.0. Demographic characteristics were inferred using a social media analytics company. The comprehensive research that we conducted indicated that 2,584 of the 3,000 tweets were ED-related; 65% expressed a preoccupation with body shape, 13% displayed issues related to food/eating/calories, and 4% expressed placing a high level of importance on body weight. Most tweets were sent by girls (90%) who were ≤19 years old (77%). Our findings stress a need to better understand if and how ED-related content on social media can be used for targeting prevention and intervention messages towards those who are in-need and could potentially benefit from these efforts.</div
Vulnerability to Stroke: Implications of Perinatal Programming of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis
Chronic stress is capable of exacerbating each major, modifiable, endogenous risk factor for cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease. Indeed, exposure to stress can increase both the incidence and severity of stroke, presumably through activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Now that characterization of the mechanisms underlying epigenetic programming of the HPA axis is well underway, there has been renewed interest in examining the role of early environment on the evolution of health conditions across the entire lifespan. Indeed, neonatal manipulations in rodents that reduce stress responsivity, and subsequent life-time exposure to glucocorticoids, are associated with a reduction in the development of neuroendocrine, neuroanatomical, and cognitive dysfunctions that typically progress with age. Although improved day to day regulation of the HPA axis also may be accompanied by a decrease in stroke risk, evidence from rodent studies suggest that an associated cost could be increased susceptibility to inflammation and neuronal death in the event that a stroke does occur and the individual is exposed to persistently elevated corticosteroids. Given its importance in regulation of health and disease states, any long-term modulation of the HPA axis is likely to be associated with both benefits and potential risks. The goals of this review article are to examine (1) the clinical and experimental data suggesting that neonatal experiences can shape HPA axis regulation, (2) the influence of stress and the HPA axis on stroke incidence and severity, and (3) the potential for neonatal programming of the HPA axis to impact adult cerebrovascular health
