Collaboration in Musical Theatre Writing
Good musical theatre writing is generally assessed by how intentional it is in telling its story. Since it is a very difficult thing to tell a story using music, writers must exercise extreme caution in allowing a story to unfold in an effective, economic way. Recently, there has been a trend in theatre for projects to be developed in a way that utilizes less time of writers sitting alone in a room, and more of material being developed on its feet. Devised theatre, as it is often called, is anathema to the traditional practices of musical theatre writing. The results of this project, the music and lyrics for a modern adaptation of Aristophanes\u27 Lysistrata, shed light on musical theatre writing and its relationship to collaboration. Though the songs that were generated as a result of Lysistrata were often fraught with errors in terms of structure, rhyme, and meter, the artistic ambition contained in the songs was at least slightly commendable. If devising has a place in musical theatre writing, it is as a method of generating new material, not as a way of refining material with high standards
Domestic Violence in the National Football League
This study was conducted to examine the relationship that existed between domestic violence incidents involving National Football League (NFL) players and the popularity of the league. With more media coverage on playersâ off the field exploits there was potential that players committing crimes as heinous as domestic violence was having an impact on how fans consumed the NFLâs products. This was initially sparked by the widely publicized incident featuring former Baltimore Ravens running back, Ray Rice. As the league struggled to figure out on how to best handle player discipline for domestic violence the public opinion of the NFL diminished.
Fan behavior was the measurable component for NFL popularity and was examined by looking at metrics such as television viewership and game attendance. Domestic violence incidents were totaled from an NFL player arrest database. The incidents were examined for physical violence and any resulting player releases. By compiling secondary data describing fan behavior and comparing it to total domestic violence incidents among NFL players it could be seen that fan behavior was generally unchanged by NFL players committing domestic violence. The study provided a look into the impact of players off field behavior on the business of the NFL.
What was found was there was not conclusive evidence that a relationship between domestic violence in the NFL and the leagueâs popularity exists. Despite predictions that fan behavior display a noticeable change in relation to domestic violence incidents in the NFL, the data did not reflect such a finding, and statistical tests did not reflect a significant relationship. For the NFL, it may reveal that behavior of their fans, such as attending games or consuming NFL products from home, may not be hampered by the off the field follies of the leagueâs players. However, having already weathered a storm of criticism regarding the leagueâs policies and demeanor towards domestic violence, understanding how people respond to such incidents could prove critical for the NFL long term
Exploring the Notion of Forgetting
Ignorance and forgetting are similar in some regards, as both involve a state of not knowing. Often forgetting, like ignorance, can put us at a disadvantage in regards to a lack of retaining knowledge. Forgetting can lead to ignorance if not realized and remedied. However, just as ignorance is more than a lack of knowledge, forgetting is more than a lack of remembrance. There are many kinds of forgetting, each with different kinds memories lost and purposes served. Despite the inherent risks of forgetting, there are advantages, ones that make forgetting an essential part of human cognition. In fact, without the ability to forget, we could never remember
The spectroscopic chemical and photophysical properties of Martian soils and their analogs
The program of research outlined should advance significantly the understanding of the spectral signal of montmorillonites in general and the variations produced in it by structural and surface ferric and ferrous iron and interlayer water as a function of several environmental conditions that are different between Earth and Mars. In addition, an extensive data base was collected providing spectral characterization of several features (iron, both surface and structural, OH-groups, both structural and from adsorbed water and O(-) centers) that are known, or thought to be, influential in directing the surface activity of these important materials. With this data base with which to assess the results of the Viking labeled release simulation studies, it should be possible to gain important insights into the mechanisms of surface reactivity for this important chemical reaction. The results to be gained from these studies will provide a significant body of ground base truth from which to assess: the presence of smectite clays on Mars; the mineralogical form in which the Martian iron is bound; establish upper limits on the present surface water content of Martian soils; perhaps provide insights on the Martian surface radiation history; and to make strong predictions about the nature of surface chemistry on Mars, if iron-bearing clays are a significant component of the surface mineralogical assemblage
The Short-Term Effects of Viewing Relationally Aggressive Media on Hostile Cognitions in College Women
Correlational and experimental research indicates that relationally aggressive media exposure is associated with increased aggression (e.g., Coyne, Archer, & Eslea, 2004; Coyne et al., 2008; 2011). The General Aggression Model (GAM) (Anderson & Bushman, 2002) suggests that cognitions about aggression mediate the relationship between aggressive media exposure and subsequent behavior, but little research has examined this possibility in regards to relationally aggressive media. The goals of this study were (1) to examine the short-term effects of viewing relationally aggressive media on hostile response generation in women, and (2) to examine whether pre-existing relational aggression moderates these effects. 158 college women were randomly assigned to view either a relationally aggressive or neutral movie clip. After viewing, participants read 5 vignettes that described interpersonal conflicts, and then were asked to generate a behavioral response to each scenario. There was a significant interaction of type of movie clip viewed and pre-existing relational aggression. Specifically, watching the relationally aggressive movie clip caused participants who were high on relational aggression to generate significantly more hostile responses than those low on relational aggression. These findings provide evidence that relationally aggressive media exposure affects cognitive processes underlying aggressive behavior, but that these short-term effects are moderated by individual differences in aggression. Implications for future research are discussed
Guest observer program OAO
The OAO-A2 observations of two Be stars, 60 Cygnus and gamma Cassiopeia, were analyzed. It is shown that unpolarized radiation produced by continuous Balmer emission in the atmospheres of Be stars is significant in the explanation of the polarization observed below the Balmer discontinuity. Available multicolor polarimetry data was also analyzed with respect to interstellar polarization
Optical contamination screening of materials with a high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity resonated continuously at 1.06-”m wavelength in vacuum
An optical-loss measurement system based on a resonant Fabry Perot cavity at 1.06”m in vacuum has been developed for independent monitoring of the cavity total loss and the optical absorption loss. Maintenance of cavity resonance over a one-month period allows the assessment of long-term degradation of the cavity optics in the presence of outgassing materials, with sensitivities of 5 ppm yr for total cavity loss and 2 ppm yr for cavity absorption loss. Test results for light-emitting diodes, Kapton-insulated cable assemblies, and Vac-seal epoxy adhesive are given. Scaling of these results to the optical performance requirements of LIGO is discussed
