We study the diffractive production of high pt photons at HERA. We have
implemented the process as a new hard sub-process in the HERWIG event generator

Operations with the special purpose dextrous manipulator on Space Station Freedom
SPAR Canada is actively participating in the Space Station Freedom Program by contributing the Mobile Servicing System (MSS) which will be involved in assembly, maintenance and servicing of both the Space Station and the MSS itself. Part of the MSS is the Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator (SPDM), a two armed dextrous robot with advanced vision and manipulative capabilities. In addition to Space Station and payload servicing activities the SPDM will be designed to perform self maintenance on the MSS itself. The majority of Space Station equipment will be on orbit for the anticipated 30 year lifespan and the maintenance philosophy will be to repair by the exchange of Orbit Replacement Units or ORUs. The present concept, configuration, and operation of the SPDM and the detailed simulations associated with the maintenance of part of the MSS are described. The Design Reference Mission is the replacement of a Joint Drive Module on the Canadian large payload manipulator, the Space Station Remote Manipulator System. Other Design Reference Missions that were investigated are briefly described, and future operations activity to support the definition of SPDM requirements are discussed
Knowlesi malaria in Vietnam
The simian malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi is transmitted in the forests of Southeast Asia. Symptomatic zoonotic knowlesi malaria in humans is widespread in the region and is associated with a history of spending time in the jungle. However, there are many settings where knowlesi transmission to humans would be expected but is not found. A recent report on the Ra-glai population of southern central Vietnam is taken as an example to help explain why this may be so
Space shuttle digital flight control system
The space shuttle digital, fly by wire, flight control system presents an interesting challenge in avionics system design. In residence in each of four redundant general purpose computers at lift off are the guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for the entire flight. The mission is divided into several flight segments: first stage ascent, second stage ascent; abort to launch site, abort once around; on orbit operations, entry, terminal area energy management; and approach and landing. The FCS is complicated in that it must perform the functions to fly the shuttle as a boost vehicle, as a spacecraft, as a reentry vehicle, and as a conventional aircraft. The crew is provided with both manual and automatic modes of operations in all flight phases including touchdown and rollout

Statistics of quantum transmission in one dimension with broad disorder
We study the statistics of quantum transmission through a one-dimensional
disordered system modelled by a sequence of independent scattering units. Each
unit is characterized by its length and by its action, which is proportional to
the logarithm of the transmission probability through this unit. Unit actions
and lengths are independent random variables, with a common distribution that
is either narrow or broad. This investigation is motivated by results on
disordered systems with non-stationary random potentials whose fluctuations
grow with distance.
In the statistical ensemble at fixed total sample length four phases can be
distinguished, according to the values of the indices characterizing the
distribution of the unit actions and lengths. The sample action, which is
proportional to the logarithm of the conductance across the sample, is found to
obey a fluctuating scaling law, and therefore to be non-self-averaging, in
three of the four phases. According to the values of the two above mentioned
indices, the sample action may typically grow less rapidly than linearly with
the sample length (underlocalization), more rapidly than linearly
(superlocalization), or linearly but with non-trivial sample-to-sample

JPEG steganography with particle swarm optimization accelerated by AVX
Digital steganography aims at hiding secret messages in digital data transmitted over insecure channels. The JPEG format is prevalent in digital communication, and images are often used as cover objects in digital steganography. Optimization methods can improve the properties of images with embedded secret but introduce additional computational complexity to their processing. AVX instructions available in modern CPUs are, in this work, used to accelerate data parallel operations that are part of image steganography with advanced optimizations.Web of Science328art. no. e544
High fidelity imaging and high performance computing in nonlinear EIT
We show that nonlinear EIT provides images with well defined characteristics when smoothness of the image is used as a constraint in the reconstruction process. We use the gradient of the logarithm of resistivity as an effective measure of image smoothness, which has the advantage that resistivity and conductivity are treated with equal weight. We suggest that a measure of the fidelity of the image to the object requires the explicit definition and application of such a constraint. The algorithm is applied to the simulation of intra-ventricular haemorrhaging (IVH) in a simple head model. The results indicate that a 5% increase in the blood content of the ventricles would be easily detectable with the noise performance of contemporary instrumentation. The possible implementation of the algorithm in real time via high performance computing is discussed
