Posttraumatic Growth in United States Military Veterans
PTSD’s prevalence in U.S. military veterans requires a greater understanding of the disorder as well as knowledge of the concept of PTG. PTG has been described as a positive outcome from a traumatic experience (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996). Research on PTG found that veterans that were married, had strong social support, identified as being a minority, and participated in various trauma-related therapies reported higher levels of PTG. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the contributing factors of PTG in U.S. military veterans. Knowledge of the contributing factors, signs, and facilitation of PTG is important in relation to the strengths-based perspective of social work practice
The stability of immunoglobulin messenger RNA in B cell lines
An important determinant of the level of protein produced from any particular gene is the cellular content of its messenger RNA, which in turn may be regulated at the levels of both synthesis and degradation. For example, as B cells differentiate, there is a large increase in the abundance of messenger RNA coding for immunoglobulin, which is not fully accounted for by an increase in the rate of gene transcription. The aim of this work has been to investigate the role of changes in messenger RNA stability in the regulation of immunoglobulin gene expression. Initial experiments used a model system, consisting of mouse fibroblast cells containing a high copy number recombinant human growth hormone gene, to develop a method for measuring RNA half-lives in mammalian cells. Pulse chase analysis was carried out using a ribonuclease protection assay to detect specific transcripts. This method was then used to investigate the rates of decay of immunoglobulin heavy chain RNA in two cell lines representing the resting B cell and the plasma cell stages of differentiation. It was found that heavy chain RNA had a significantly longer half- life in the cell line representing the plasma cell stage. This increase in half-life makes a significant contribution to the increase in heavy chain mRNA levels in these cells. To investigate factors which might control the stability of heavy chain RNA in plasma cells, a transfection system was employed to facilitate half-life measurements on a variety of mutated heavy chain RNA molecules. Heavy chains altered at their 5' and 3' ends were placed under the control of a heat shock promoter, and transfected into cells representing the plasma cell stage. This allowed a pulse of heavy chain mRNA to be generated upon treatment of the cells with elevated temperature, the decay of which could be monitored by Northern blot analysis. It was found that sequences at the 5' end of the molecule are important for its stability in cell lines representing the plasma cell stage

Preparing Education Leaders to Meet Diverse School Needs: A Cross-Case Analysis of Principal Preparation Programs
As schools become increasingly culturally diverse, school leaders require the preparation to assist them with the challenges they may face. Educational leaders have a responsibility to guarantee that all students are receiving an equitable and fair education. School leaders have a duty to promote teaching and learning for all students. Principal preparation program should prepare today\u27s school leaders with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to be culturally aware and hold high expectation for all students and create inclusive school environments. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and determine if principal preparation programs in South Carolina are preparing school leaders to lead successfully in culturally diverse schools, as culturally competent, culturally responsive, and socially just school leaders. A multi-case study approach was used to collect and analyze data from four principal preparation programs to assess the effectiveness of their programs. The findings revealed that principal preparation programs were not preparing aspiring school leaders to lead effectively in culturally diverse school settings as culturally competent, responsive, and socially just leaders. Principals are being prepared with the traditional preparation program design and content knowledge. In conclusion, the researcher provides recommendations for principal preparation programs, state accreditation agencies, and list implication for changing policy
The Power Fantastic: How Genre Expectations Mediate Authority
This dissertation reconciles academic and popular uses of the term genre, concluding that genre is a transmedial, mutable, associative, recognized system regulated through tacit understandings of prestige and power in a given Social space. The study employs a digital humanities method (dependent on digitally facilitated data analysis), conducting descriptive discourse analysis on collected online discussions from fan spaces concerning the fantasy genre and matters related to fantasy. In this way, I construct an image of the fantasy genre, and genre in general, as a multimodal space in which material freely passes between traditional and new media and participants actively negotiate their own authorities
RodCon: Bringing the Community Together with Comics
RodCon, Rod Library’s annual free comic-con, aims to provide an engaging, dynamic event that celebrates comic books, pop culture, and their contributions to academia and literacy. RodCon creates a welcoming forum where the community and visitors to our community can discuss and celebrate issues of race, gender, sexuality, and equality as they pertain to popular culture, all while creating a fun and engaging space for children of all ages. Through campus partnerships, RodCon provides a platform for UNI students to apply what they are learning in the classroom and engage with the community in ways that they can’t within the classroom. This free and family-friendly event brought over 3,000 people to the UNI campus and Rod Library in 2017 and 2018
Factors that influence women\u27s disclosures of substance use during pregnancy : a qualitative study of ten midwives and ten pregnant women
The present study was designed to examine the factors that motivate or act as barriers to disclosure of substance use by pregnant women. Participants included 10 midwives and 10 pregnant women who attended two ante-natal clinics at an Australian maternity hospital. One clinic specialized in women who were substance users and one clinic was specifically for young women (under 19 years of age). Midwives and pregnant women were interviewed in-depth about disclosure of substance use. Interview transcripts were analyzed, and the results revealed six main themes: practice style, assessment of substance use, practice environment and privacy, child protection issues, health of the baby, and continuity of care. The findings are discussed in relation to recommendations for best practice in midwifery care when working with pregnant women who use substances.<br /
The Effects of Magnetic Insoles on Lumbar Flexion
Magnets have been used for therapeutic purposes for hundreds of years. Today, magnetic devices and other alternative therapies are more popular than ever among the general public. The effect of these magnetic devices is dependent on several variables including strength, depth of penetration, placement, time exposed to the magnetic field, and polarity. There are many proposed theories on how magnets affect the body, but there is little research to support them. One of the theories proposed is that magnets alter connective tissue elasticity and allow greater range of motion (ROM). Additional research needs to be conducted to validate or negate these proposed theories.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of magnetic insoles on lumbar flexion. The study also evaluated the placebo effect of having knowledge of the theoretical effects of a strong magnetic insole on lumbar flexion measurements.
Thirty-eight subjects between the ages of 20 and 49 participated in this double blind study. A participant survey was used to collect general demographic data and as a screening tool to exclude those with any pathology and/or conditions that could have been adversely affected by the magnets or testing procedure positions/movements. For Trial 1, active flexion at the lumbar spine was measured by the double inclinometer method at baseline and on each of the three different sets of insoles. Two sets of insoles contained magnets, each of which was of a different strength, while the third insole did not contain any magnets. The measurements were repeated in Trial 2 to evaluate the placebo effect. No significant difference was found when comparing lumbar ROM across the three insoles for either trial. A significant difference was found in ROM for lumbar flexion between males and females on all insoles.
Although this study found no increase in lumbar flexion when standing on magnetic insoles, these results cannot be carried over to other possible effects of magnetic devices. The results of this study have provided additional information regarding the effects of magnetic devices on healthy subjects and have illustrated the need for further research on the various magnetic devices that have become so popular.
Future research may further evaluate the effects of magnet therapy by including individuals with impairments, other magnetic devices, various magnet placement methods, and various treatment durations. Only as research accumulates will consumers be able to make informed decisions regarding the use of magnetic devices as an alternative therapy
A Collaborative Voyage to Improve Students\u27 Career Information Literacy
Librarians, a member of the Hotel College faculty, and a member of the Career Services staff at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas collaborated in the design, implementation and evaluation of a non-traditional research assignment asking students to demonstrate real world information literacy skills.
Session attendees will explore the process by which the traditional librarian-teaching faculty member collaboration grew into a richer project involving a non-traditional partnering. Attendees will be guided through a discussion on levels of collaboration and an audit of potential non-traditional partner opportunities at their own institutions.
Attendees will examine the product of this partnership: an assignment that asks students to generate informed questions to ask in a job interview. The assignment was designed to be useable in larger classes where a classic “term paper” style research assignment might be unrealistic to effectively administer and grade. After a session with the librarians on conducting research, students enrolled in a course on professional development within the hospitality industry are required to develop questions that they might ask of an interviewer that demonstrate the company- and industry-specific knowledge they gleaned via their research. Students are motivated by the idea of positioning themselves favorably in an interview in a way that a traditional term paper on a company or an industry fails to motivate. Attendees will brainstorm ways a similar approach (assigning the development of informed questions) might be used in different settings.
The presentation will close by describing the personal and professional benefits of collaboration for those involved
Implementing a Deliberate Neologism about the Filipino-American Identity Crisis
Neologisms are words that have recently entered our language but are only just beginning to be accepted as part of daily usage. As the English language evolves, new neologisms are formed while the usage of certain words may fade into relative obscurity. New words are coined to reflect the changing moods and cultural needs of the time. When it comes to critical race theory, neologisms can be used as a method of spreading awareness and addressing a problem. The Filipino American community is a marginalized group that experiences identity disturbance from the duality of both their nationality and ethnicity. Furthermore, there seems to be prejudice for Filipinos in the diaspora from both Filipinos from the Philippines and Americans alike. The Filipino American identity has been the subject of debate between Filipinos and Americans. Our neologism, “incogthymia,” was invented in response to this debate. In this presentation, we will showcase the process of inventing & the results of attempting to implement a deliberate, academic neologism. We also highlight evidence from scholarly articles and personal accounts to demonstrate the Filipino American Identity Crisis
