A City Invincible? The Transition of Camden, NJ, From Industrial to Postindustrial City

    Get PDF
The primary topic of this essay is the causes for disinvestment that occurred during the deindustrialization of Camden, NJ, between 1960 and 1980. The paper constructs a framework based on the industrial history of Camden, which is composed roughly of the years between 1900 and 1960. This basis explains Camden’s transition from a small town with the purpose of ferry terminal to an industrial powerhouse city. The main portion of the essay discusses the economic and social events that affected Camden between the transformative years of 1960 and 1980, as the industrial era was concluding. The events that transpired in the city during these two decades are compared to the historical demographic information for the city to pinpoint national and local trends. The primary sources used for this demographic and population data are the United States Censuses from 1960, 1970, and 1980. After reasoning the cause for change in Camden, the focus of the essay shifts to the effects of these changes, primarily continued disinvestment, low socioeconomic status, and poor environmental conditions. The essay concludes by discussing the changes in Camden since 1980

Comparing Laboratory Instruction Methods in Biology

    Get PDF
This investigation compares achievement of ninth grade students in biology taught by inductive laboratory experiments, by deductive laboratory exercises, and by demonstration of inductive experiments. It appears that the inductive approach produced significantly greater attainment of attitudes of science. The emphasis of this on designing experiments and analyzing the data did not distract from the ability of students to learn and apply facts and principles. None of the instructional methods tested was found to be more effective with any particular ability range. Students in laboratory classes reacted more positively to their instruction than did those taught by the demonstration method

A Comparative Post-Colonial Approach to Hedayat\u27s The Blind Owl

In her article, A Comparative Post-Colonial Approach to Hedayat\u27s The Blind Owl, Yasamine C. Coulter discusses post-colonial theories of Edward Said, Frantz Fanon, and Jalal ale Ahmad, and relates them to the major themes of Hedayat\u27s novel. For the most part, the fact that the text\u27s narrator is disillusioned with his country\u27s traditional way of life makes him an outsider within his own society. However, he fails to find peace in his other, chosen, mode of being and this implies that he is unable to fully identify with Western traditions, either. It is at this point of the text that Coulter draws a parallel between the narrator\u27s distress and Sadegh Hedayat\u27s personal angst, both of which stem from an inability to reconcile Western and Eastern influences and modes of existence and culture. Moreover, the narrator\u27s inability to completely accept or disregard the notion of metaphysics is a macrocosmic manifestation of his cultural dilemma. Coulter concludes her argumentation with a discussion of how one of perhaps the most important fault lines of post-colonial discourse is very real in present-day Iran, precisely because Iranians still do not agree on how to reclaim their cultural past and assert their own identity in the real context of Western cultural omnipresence

The Thermal Environment of the Fiber Glass Dome for the New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory

The New Solar Telescope (NST) is a 1.6-meter off-axis Gregory-type telescope with an equatorial mount and an open optical support structure. To mitigate the temperature fluctuations along the exposed optical path, the effects of local/dome-related seeing have to be minimized. To accomplish this, NST will be housed in a 5/8-sphere fiberglass dome that is outfitted with 14 active vents evenly spaced around its perimeter. The 14 vents house louvers that open and close independently of one another to regulate and direct the passage of air through the dome. In January 2006, 16 thermal probes were installed throughout the dome and the temperature distribution was measured. The measurements confirmed the existence of a strong thermal gradient on the order of 5 degree Celsius inside the dome. In December 2006, a second set of temperature measurements were made using different louver configurations. In this study, we present the results of these measurements along with their integration into the thermal control system (ThCS) and the overall telescope control system (TCS).Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, submitted to SPIE Optics+Photonics, San Diego, U.S.A., 26-30 August 2007, Conference: Solar Physics and Space Weather Instrumentation II, Proceedings of SPIE Volume 6689, Paper #2

Selected Mission Architectures For The Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF): Large, Medium, and Small

    Get PDF
Four teams incorporating scientists and engineers from more than 50 universities and 20 engineering firms have assessed techniques for detecting and characterizing terrestrial planets orbiting nearby stars. The primary conclusion from the effort of the past two years is that with suitable technology investment starting now, a mission to detect terrestrial planets around 150 nearby stars could be launched within a decade. Missions of smaller scale could carry out more modest programs capable of detecting and characterizing gas giant planets around tens of stars and of detecting terrestrial planets around the nearest stars

Epidemiological analysis of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates from adult patients with cystic fibrosis

Using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, we genotyped 21 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates from patients attending an adult cystic fibrosis unit. Eleven patients exhibited pulsotypes related to 2 locally endemic strains. Eleven chronically colonized patients were assessed over a period of up to 2 years, and all demonstrated a retention of strain type
