Stamped Amphora Handles from Tel Beersheba

Get PDF
This article publishes the 39 stamped amphora handles found during excavations conducted at Tel Beersheba between 1969 and 1976. All were found in poorly stratified contexts and so have no real stratigraphic value. They do, however, attest to the importance of Beersheba in the Rhodian economic sphere of the late Hellenistic period and add to our knowledge of Rhodesian fabricants and eponyms of the second century B.C

Excavations on the Kastro at Kavousi. An Architectural Overview

Get PDF
Excavations on the Kastro at Kavousi (P1. 77:a) were conducted over a five-year span between 1987 and 1990 and again in 1992.1 Seasons of study and site conservation took place in 1991 and between 1993 and 1995. Preliminary reports have been published through 1990,2 but these give only a fragmentary picture of the development of the settlement because they do not take into account the excavations of 1992 or the work accomplished during the study seasons. It is now possible to present a fuller picture of the settlement; accordingly, this article provides an overview of the work accomplished to date

Racial Disparities in Sentencing: Implications for the Criminal Justice System and the African American Community

Get PDF
This paper analyzes the consequences of discriminatory sentencing on the African American community. The intent is to review factors that contribute to the over-representation of African Americans in the prison system and to analyze the way that the judicial system maintains these disparate numbers through practices and procedures, racial profiling, historical biases and quasi legal procedures sanctioned by the mainstream process under the guise of law and order. Review of the literature, extensive meta- analysis and statistics confirms and support the statistics presented and the finding provided. The results of these harsh and disparate sentencing are resulting in the weakening and destruction of the alreadyfragile African American community. Without a complete overhaul of the judicial system and sensitizing of the decision-makers in the legal and political community, these negative impacts will continue to have adverse effect on a large number of Americans who would otherwise become productive citizens. The conclusion presents remedies and alternatives to the disparate sentencing and incarceration practices perpetrated on members of the African American population

Habitual physical activity and the risk for depressive and anxiety disorders among older men and women

Background: Regular physical activity is generally associated with psychological well-being, although there are relatively few prospective studies in older adults. We investigated habitual physical activity as a risk factor for de novo depressive and anxiety disorders in older men and women from the general population. Methods: In this nested case-control study, subjects aged 60 years or more were identified from randomly selected cohorts being followed prospectively in the Geelong Osteoporosis Study. Cases were individuals with incident depressive or anxiety disorders, diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR (SCID-I/NP); controls had no history of these disorders.Habitual physical activity, measured using a validated questionnaire, and other exposures were documented at baseline, approximately four years prior to psychiatric interviews. Those with depressive or anxiety disorders that pre-dated baseline were excluded. Results: Of 547 eligible subjects, 14 developed de novo depressive or anxiety disorders and were classified as cases; 533 controls remained free of disease. Physical activity was protective against the likelihood of depressive and anxiety disorders; OR = 0.55 (95% CI 0.32–0.94), p = 0.03; each standard deviation increase in the transformed physical activity score was associated with an approximate halving in the likelihood of developing depressive or anxiety disorders. Leisure-time physical activity contributed substantially to the overall physical activity score. Age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, weight and socioeconomic status did not substantially confound the association. Conclusion: This study provides evidence consistent with the notion that higher levels of habitual physical activity are protective against the subsequent risk of development of de novo depressive and anxiety disorders.<br /
