Optimization of thermal systems with sensitive optics, electronics, and structures
A strategy was investigated by which thermal designers for spacecraft could devise an optimal thermal control system to maintain the required temperatures, temperature differences, changes in temperature, and changes in temperature differences for specified equipment and elements of the spacecraft's structure. Thermal control is to be maintained by the coating pattern chosen for the external surfaces and heaters chosen to supplement the coatings. The approach is to minimize the thermal control power, thereby minimizing the weight of the thermal control system. Because there are so many complex computations involved in determining the optimal coating design a computerized approach was contemplated. An optimization strategy including all the elements considered by the thermal designer for use in the early stages of design, where impact on the mission is greatest, and a plan for implementing the strategy were successfully developed. How the optimization process may be used to optimize the design of the Space Telescope as a test case is demonstrated

Topological Defects in Twisted Bundles of Two-Dimensionally Ordered Filaments
Twisted assemblies of filaments in ropes, cables and bundles are essential
structural elements in wide use in macroscopic materials as well as within the
cells and tissues of living organisms. We develop the unique, non-linear
elastic properties of twisted filament bundles that derive from generic
properties of two-dimensional line-ordered materials. Continuum elasticity
reveals a formal equivalence between the elastic stresses induced by bundle
twist and those induced by the positive curvature in thin, elastic sheets.
These geometrically-induced stresses can be screened by 5-fold disclination
defects in lattice packing, and we predict a discrete spectrum elastic energy
groundstates associated with integer numbers of disclinations in cylindrical
bundles. Finally, we show that elastic-energy groundstates are extremely
sensitive to defect position in the cross-section, with off-center
disclinations driving the entire bundle to buckle, adopting globally writhing

Applicability of Modified Effective-Range Theory to positron-atom and positron-molecule scattering
We analyze low-energy scattering of positrons on Ar atoms and N2 molecules
using Modified Effective-Range Theory (MERT) developped by O'Malley, Spruch and
Rosenberg [Journal of Math. Phys. 2, 491 (1961)]. We use formulation of MERT
based on exact solutions of Schroedinger equation with polarization potential
rather than low-energy expansions of phase shifts into momentum series. We show
that MERT describes well experimental data, provided that effective-range
expansion is performed both for s- and p-wave scattering, which dominate in the
considered regime of positron energies (0.4 - 2 eV). We estimate the values of
the s-wave scattering lenght and the effective range for e+ - Ar and e+ - N2

Lectures on mathematical aspects of (twisted) supersymmetric gauge theories
Supersymmetric gauge theories have played a central role in applications of
quantum field theory to mathematics. Topologically twisted supersymmetric gauge
theories often admit a rigorous mathematical description: for example, the
Donaldson invariants of a 4-manifold can be interpreted as the correlation
functions of a topologically twisted N=2 gauge theory. The aim of these
lectures is to describe a mathematical formulation of partially-twisted
supersymmetric gauge theories (in perturbation theory). These partially twisted
theories are intermediate in complexity between the physical theory and the
topologically twisted theories. Moreover, we will sketch how the operators of
such a theory form a two complex dimensional analog of a vertex algebra.
Finally, we will consider a deformation of the N=1 theory and discuss its
relation to the Yangian, as explained in arXiv:1308.0370 and arXiv:1303.2632.Comment: Notes from a lecture series by the first author at the Les Houches

Performance and Stability of an Agile Tail-less MAV with Flexible Articulated Wings
This paper considers the problems of (a) modelling the
ight mechanics of a tail-less MAV equipped with
exible articulated wings, and (b) the analysis of its turning performance. The wings are assumed to have two degrees of freedom - heave and twist. They are
assumed to be actuated from the root, which is the abstraction of an experimental control mechanism being developed by the authors. The dihedral and twist angles at the wing root are controlled. A novel actuator concept of axial tension to control wing stiffness has been
explored in this paper. It is shown that axial tension in the wing has a significant effect on the turning performance of the aircraft, although the effect is not uniformly beneficial in nature. The effect of
exibility on the steady state turning performance of the aircraft has been demonstrated by comparing it with that of a rigid aircraft, and with that of a similar aircraft possessing a wing with different elastic properties

This project is supported by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority through funding from the Marine Monitoring Program, and the Australian Institute of Marine Science[Extract] This report details the condition of 31 inshore coral reefs monitored under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Marine Monitoring Program and nine inshore coral reefs monitored by the Australian Institute of Marine Science’s Long-Term Monitoring Program. Results are presented in the context of the pressures faced by the ecosystem and their ramifications for the long-term health of inshore coral reefs
