The Economic Value of Rebuilding Fisheries
The global demand for protein from seafood â- whether wild, caught or cultured, whether for direct consumption or as feed for livestock â- is high and projected to continue growing. However, the ocean's ability to meet this demand is uncertain due to either mismanagement or, in some cases, lack of management of marine fish stocks. Efforts to rebuild and recover the world's fisheries will benefit from an improved understanding of the long-term economic benefits of recovering collapsed stocks, the trajectory and duration of different rebuilding approaches, variation in the value and timing of recovery for fisheries with different economic, biological, and regulatory characteristics, including identifying which fisheries are likely to benefit most from recovery, and the benefits of avoiding collapse in the first place. These questions are addressed in this paper using a dynamic bioeconomic optimisation model that explicitly accounts for economics, management, and ecology of size-structured exploited fish populations. Within this model framework, different management options (effort controls on small-, medium-, and large-sized fish) including management that optimises economic returns over a specified planning horizon are simulated and the consequences compared. The results show considerable economic gains from rebuilding fisheries, with magnitudes varying across fisheries

Measuring the Impact of Nextstep Career Advice in the North East of England
In September, 2007, the main contractors of the four nextstep networks in the North East (referred to in this paper as the âconsortiumâ) successfully submitted a proposal to the Learning & Skills Council (LSC) for funding to develop a
framework for measuring the impact of career advice. It was agreed that the project would result in a practice-based âImpact Toolkitâ that would include:-
⢠a set of impact measures that should be used in the new adult careers service with a rationale for their inclusion;
⢠methodologies for each of the impact measures identified;
⢠approaches to obtaining information on progression in learning and work â with templates and case study material;
⢠approaches to measuring soft outcomes; and
⢠suggested Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Groundwater shapes sediment biogeochemistry and microbial diversity in a submerged Great Lake sinkhole
For a large part of earthâs history, cyanobacterial mats thrived in lowâ oxygen conditions, yet our understanding of their ecological functioning is limited. Extant cyanobacterial mats provide windows into the putative functioning of ancient ecosystems, and they continue to mediate biogeochemical transformations and nutrient transport across the sedimentâ water interface in modern ecosystems. The structure and function of benthic mats are shaped by biogeochemical processes in underlying sediments. A modern cyanobacterial mat system in a submerged sinkhole of Lake Huron (LH) provides a unique opportunity to explore such sedimentâ mat interactions. In the Middle Island Sinkhole (MIS), seeping groundwater establishes a lowâ oxygen, sulfidic environment in which a microbial mat dominated by Phormidium and Planktothrix that is capable of both anoxygenic and oxygenic photosynthesis, as well as chemosynthesis, thrives. We explored the coupled microbial community composition and biogeochemical functioning of organicâ rich, sulfidic sediments underlying the surface mat. Microbial communities were diverse and vertically stratified to 12Ă cm sediment depth. In contrast to previous studies, which used lowâ throughput or shotgun metagenomic approaches, our highâ throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing approach revealed extensive diversity. This diversity was present within microbial groups, including putative sulfateâ reducing taxa of Deltaproteobacteria, some of which exhibited differential abundance patterns in the mats and with depth in the underlying sediments. The biological and geochemical conditions in the MIS were distinctly different from those in typical LH sediments of comparable depth. We found evidence for active cycling of sulfur, methane, and nutrients leading to high concentrations of sulfide, ammonium, and phosphorus in sediments underlying cyanobacterial mats. Indicators of nutrient availability were significantly related to MIS microbial community composition, while LH communities were also shaped by indicators of subsurface groundwater influence. Applicability of Modified Effective-Range Theory to positron-atom and positron-molecule scattering
We analyze low-energy scattering of positrons on Ar atoms and N2 molecules
using Modified Effective-Range Theory (MERT) developped by O'Malley, Spruch and
Rosenberg [Journal of Math. Phys. 2, 491 (1961)]. We use formulation of MERT
based on exact solutions of Schroedinger equation with polarization potential
rather than low-energy expansions of phase shifts into momentum series. We show
that MERT describes well experimental data, provided that effective-range
expansion is performed both for s- and p-wave scattering, which dominate in the
considered regime of positron energies (0.4 - 2 eV). We estimate the values of
the s-wave scattering lenght and the effective range for e+ - Ar and e+ - N2

Equivalences between GIT quotients of Landau-Ginzburg B-models
We define the category of B-branes in a (not necessarily affine)
Landau-Ginzburg B-model, incorporating the notion of R-charge. Our definition
is a direct generalization of the category of perfect complexes. We then
consider pairs of Landau-Ginzburg B-models that arise as different GIT
quotients of a vector space by a one-dimensional torus, and show that for each
such pair the two categories of B-branes are quasi-equivalent. In fact we
produce a whole set of quasi-equivalences indexed by the integers, and show

Group And Individual Social Network Metrics Are Robust To Changes In Resource Distribution In Experimental Populations Of Forked Fungus Beetles
1. Social interactions drive many important ecological and evolutionary processes. It is therefore essential to understand the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that underlie social patterns. A central tenet of the field of behavioural ecology is the expectation that the distribution of resources shapes patterns of social interactions. 2. We combined experimental manipulations with social network analyses to ask how patterns of resource distribution influence complex social interactions. 3. We experimentally manipulated the distribution of an essential food and reproductive resource in semi-natural populations of forked fungus beetles Bolitotherus cornutus. We aggregated resources into discrete clumps in half of the populations and evenly dispersed resources in the other half. We then observed social interactions between individually marked beetles. Half-way through the experiment, we reversed the resource distribution in each population, allowing us to control any demographic or behavioural differences between our experimental populations. At the end of the experiment, we compared individual and group social network characteristics between the two resource distribution treatments. 4. We found a statistically significant but quantitatively small effect of resource distribution on individual social network position and detected no effect on group social network structure. Individual connectivity (individual strength) and individual cliquishness (local clustering coefficient) increased in environments with clumped resources, but this difference explained very little of the variance in individual social network position. Individual centrality (individual betweenness) and measures of overall social structure (network density, average shortest path length and global clustering coefficient) did not differ between environments with dramatically different distributions of resources. 5. Our results illustrate that the resource environment, despite being fundamental to our understanding of social systems, does not always play a central role in shaping social interactions. Instead, our results suggest that sex differences and temporally fluctuating environmental conditions may be more important in determining patterns of social interactions
Experiences of engaging with mental health services in 16- to 18-year-olds: an interpretative phenomenological analysis
Despite older adolescence being a risk period for the development of mental health concerns, mental health service engagement is low among 16- to 18-year-olds. As therapeutic attendance is linked to clinical outcome, it is important to understand engagement in this population. There is a paucity of research looking specifically at the older adolescent engagement phenomenon. Previous qualitative research into adolescent experiences has provided rich and detailed results. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was chosen as the methodological approach. Ten 16- to 18-year-olds were recruited from two London-based child and adolescent mental health services. Each young person was interviewed to understand his or her personal experience of engaging in mental health services, and associated engagement barriers and facilitators. Interviews were transcribed and underwent analysis. Analysis revealed ten subthemes subsumed within four superordinate themes: engagement begins at help seeking, strength of inner resolve, evolution of the self and in the clinic room. Themes are discussed in detail. Conclusions are drawn in relation to previous theory and research. When considering 16- to 18-year understandings of the engagement phenomena, key elements include clinician and service developmental appropriateness, negotiation of developmental tasks in relation to engagement, experience of the physical building environment, and awareness of service policy. Suggestions for clinical practice in relation to engagement facilitators and threat are made, and recommendations for future research proposed
Circle talks as situated experiential learning: Context, identity, and knowledgeability in \u27learning from reflection\u27
This article presents research that used ethnographic and sociolinguistic methods to study ways participants learn through reflection when carried out as a âcircle talk.â The data indicate that participants in the event (a) invoked different contextual frames that (b) implicated them in various identity positions, which (c) affected how they could express their knowledge. These features worked together to generate socially shared meanings that enabled participants to jointly achieve conceptualizationâthe ideational role âreflectionâ is presumed to play in the experiential learning process. The analysis supports the claim that participants generate new knowledge in reflection, but challenges individualistic and cognitive assumptions regarding how this occurs. The article builds on situated views of experiential learning by showing how knowledge can be understood as socially shared and how learning and identity formation are mutually entailing processes
