Transonic propulsion system integration analysis at McDonnell Aircraft Company

The technology of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is becoming an important tool in the development of aircraft propulsion systems. Two of the most valuable features of CFD are: (1) quick acquisition of flow field data; and (2) complete description of flow fields, allowing detailed investigation of interactions. Current analysis methods complement wind tunnel testing in several ways. Herein, the discussion is focused on CFD methods. However, aircraft design studies need data from both CFD and wind tunnel testing. Each approach complements the other

Lost in \u27Trans\u27media: Where the Intersection Between Media Convergence and Missions is Found

Throughout history there has been a constant need among humans to create an avenue by which we share a connection of commonalities and differences. This desired avenue may be reflected through the exchanging of language with another which is commonly known as, communication. During this time there have been a wide variety of technological advancements invented for the purpose of connection. A newly emerging media term called transmedia authored by Henry Jenkins, was analyzed within this study. Transmedia is a method that communicates different portions of a fictional story each across different media. This thesis was conducted for the purpose of determining if transmedia could be applied to Christian missions for further dispersion of the Gospel message globally. These core goals summarize the research questions for this study. The core method used within this study to determine the use of transmedia is Jenkins Seven Principles of Transmedia which include Spreadability vs. Drillability, Continuity vs. Multiplicity, Immersion vs. Extractability, Worldbuilding, Seriality, Subjectivity and Performance. These principles assisted in establishing the criteria for how a transmedia story world is built and the methods used in doing so. The results showed that transmedia could be applied to a non-fictional story world and could also be used within Christian missions. However, there were limitations present in building a non-fictional transmedia story that was already created and where the message would still maintain its authenticity. The results concluded that in order to overcome this limitation then fictional elements, such as portraying a character from a different perspective, would be incorporated within the non-fictional story world. Therefore, the message would maintain its authenticity but the audience would be given the opportunity to engage and become involved within the story world based upon the fictional elements. This ultimately allows for social exchange to occur where a variety of cultures and people groups are reached based upon the variety offered. As a result, further dispersion of the Gospel occurs

Feeding Behavior and Influence of Hemp Varieties and Fertilization Rates on Damage Caused by Corn Earworm, Helicoverpa zea

Production of industrial hemp, Cannabis sativa L., has increased tremendously in the U.S. after its legalization through the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, known as the 2018 Farm Bill, which allowed commercial hemp production. By grower number, in 2020, Tennessee was the nation’s largest hemp program with over 1,800 producers licensed to grow up to 6,500 hectares (16,000 acres) according to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. Though fiber and seed have a role in the industry, most growers (ca. 98%) concentrate on cannabidiol production because of the expected higher cash value potential per hectare. Introducing hemp as a monocrop system in this temperate region while researchers scramble to provide pest management strategies seems to be brewing a perfect storm for hemp. This emerging industry has been negatively impacted by larvae of corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), which feed on developing inflorescences. Unfortunately, few synthetic chemical pesticides are labeled for use on hemp which provides a unique opportunity to investigate alternative control methods. A two-year study designed to characterize and evaluate the impact of corn earworm on hemp was initiated in eastern and western Tennessee by examining varietal characteristics, agronomic practices, and larval damage levels. The primary research goals of this project were to: 1) characterize the feeding behavior of corn earworm on hemp and assess the fitness of corn earworm reared on two varieties of hemp, 2) determine the impact of corn earworm on five varieties of hemp, and 3) determine the influence of hemp variety and fertilization practices on corn earworm. The results of this study have revealed that variety and plant maturity are highly correlated to larval damage (p≤0.05). No correlation between fertilizer or cannabinoid concentrations and larval damage was found (p\u3e0.05). Findings from this research allow hemp growers to make informed agronomic decisions before planting to improve hemp production in Tennessee. Further research on floral processing requirements, pesticide efficacy, terpene attractance to corn earworm moths, parasitoid species as a means of biological control, and varietal selection will lessen the impact of corn earworm larval damage on hemp

    Tennessee Death Taxes

The leading articles in this symposium stress the problems which federal death duties create in the planning of estates. The purpose of this note is to discuss the Tennessee Inheritance Tax,\u27 and to indicate how its treatment of particular types of property and forms of ownership differs from the federal succession tax. The federal tax poses no problem to the Tennessean of moderate means in planning his estate. By some elementary advance planning, all but very substantial estates may be made free of federal tax. In no event will an estate be subject to federal tax which is valued at less than 60,000afterauthorizeddeductions.Thisspecificexemptionof60,000 after authorized deductions. This specific exemption of 60,000 is now only the starting point. The Revenue Act of 1948 has included an additional deduction where property passes to a surviving spouse. By use of this marital deduction there is a splitting of ownership for estate tax purposes. A similar drastic change was made in the federal gift tax. Under prior law the donor could make annual gifts of 3,000toanynumberofdonees.Inadditiontotheseannualexclusions,thedonorhadaspecificexemptionof3,000 to any number of donees. In addition to these annual exclusions, the donor had a specific exemption of 30,000. This amount could be given in any one year or spread over several years. The 1948 Act has provided that a married donor under certain circumstances may avail himself of his spouse\u27s exemptions and exclusions. This doubles the amount of property of which such donor may divest himself free of tax

The Flow of Narrative: Misleading Structures and Uncertain Faiths in Wieland

A lingering question in criticism of Wieland asks why the narrator, Clara, uncharacteristically withholds knowledge of events and perpetrators—a decision making for exciting reading but showing a baffling artifice. Why does this traumatized protagonist spend so much time imparting her past ignorance when the eventualities are known to her at the time of her writing? Some suggest that Clara withholds the facts in an attempt to impart a feeling to readers, enlisting their sympathy and casting Carwin as the villain. Others read Clara\u27s narrative strategies as a product of mental instability, perhaps even insanity. But there exists another possibility: I suggest that Clara\u27s narrative logic is part of a larger theory of causality, accepted with complete faith by Clara and her companions, and characterized most often by a conceptualization of “flow” in the text. This term flow, and related ones like “chain” and “train”, are used with almost neurotic constancy to describe the connections between precedents and antecedents, defining the actions of the present in terms of past inertia and predicting the future with prophetic surety. Likewise, these terms feature heavily in the long, pregnant passages regarding the drift of consciousness in the interior life of the narrator. Clara\u27s retention of the eventual facts need not be read as an artificial device of story-telling, nor a manipulative tool in the prosecution of Carwin, but instead as emblematic of the novel\u27s interrogation—and ultimate critique—of Enlightenment faith in perfect continuity, a faith which would justify Clara\u27s dogged commitment to revealing events only in their original sequence. Ultimately, I argue that Brown\u27s novel gestures toward the possibility of a more open Gothic model of events and thoughts, which could address the problematic ambiguities that remain despite Clara\u27s attempt to impose a rigidly causal and chronological narrative
