A randomised trial evaluating Bevacizumab as adjuvant therapy following resection of AJCC stage IIB, IIC and III cutaneous melanoma : an update
At present, there are no standard therapies for the adjuvant treatment of malignant melanoma. Patients with primary tumours with a high-Breslow thickness (stages IIB and IIC) or with resected loco-regional nodal disease (stage III) are at high risk of developing metastasis and subsequent disease-related death. Given this, it is important that novel therapies are investigated in the adjuvant melanoma setting. Since angiogenesis is essential for primary tumour growth and the development of metastasis, anti-angiogenic agents are attractive potential therapeutic candidates for clinical trials in the adjuvant setting. Therefore, we initiated a phase II trial in resected high-risk cutaneous melanoma, assessing the efficacy of bevacizumab versus observation.
In the interim safety data analysis, we demonstrate that bevacizumab is a safe therapy in the adjuvant melanoma setting with no apparent increase in the surgical complication rate after either primary tumour resection and/or loco-regional lymphadenectomy
Electrically tunable selective reflection of light from ultraviolet to visible and infrared by heliconical cholesterics
Cholesteric liquid crystals with helicoidal molecular architecture are known
for their ability to selectively reflect light with the wavelength that is
determined by the periodicity of molecular orientations. Here we demonstrate
that by using a cholesteric with oblique helicoidal(heliconical) structure, as
opposed to the classic right-angle helicoid, one can vary the wavelength of
selectively reflected light in a broad spectral range, from ultraviolet to
visible and infrared (360-1520 nm for the same chemical composition) by simply
adjusting the electric field applied parallel to the helicoidal axis. The
effect exists in a wide temperature range (including the room temperatures) and
thus can enable many applications that require dynamically controlled
transmission and reflection of electromagnetic waves, from energy-saving smart
windows to tunable organic lasers, reflective color display, and transparent

Blood, sweat, and tears: developing clinically relevant protein biosensors for integrated body fluid analysis
Biosensors are being developed to provide rapid, quantitative, diagnostic information to clinicians in order to help guide patient treatment, without the need for centralised laboratory assays. The success of glucose monitoring is a key example of where technology innovation has met a clinical need at multiple levels-from the pathology laboratory all the way to the patient's home. However, few other biosensor devices are currently in routine use. Here we review the challenges and opportunities regarding the integration of biosensor techniques into body fluid sampling approaches, with emphasis on the point-of-care setting

Patient-reported outcomes in PROSPECT trial (Alliance N1048) ā FOLFOX is not a panacea
The PROSPECT was a randomized phase III trial that included patients with resectable rectal cancer (clinical stage cT2-3N+ or cT3N0). The trial aimed to test the hypothesis that pre-operative chemotherapy consisting of 6 cycles of FOLFOX given over a 12-week period, followed by total mesorectal excision (TME) surgery, was non-inferior to pre-operative long-course chemoradiotherapy (CRT). The primary endpoint of the study was disease-free survival (DFS), and patients were also monitored for other relevant oncological outcomes such and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) using patient-reported outcome (PRO) tools [1, 2]
