Sustainable Goods Movement: Environmental Implications of Trucks, Trains, Ships, and Planes

Consumers today have a hard time avoiding products manufactured and transported overseas, as economic globalization moves more goods from factories to major markets throughout the world. For example, in 2005, imports and exports represented approximately 25% of the U.S. economy, up from 15% in 1990.1 Increased goods movements to and from international markets generate increased domestic freight transport, as products are shipped to and from a nation’s ports within a domestic freight transportation infrastructure that includes trucks, trains, ships, and planes. Freight’s increasing economic role implies a proportional increase in energy use and emissions from freight transport modes, contributing significantly to global, regional, and local air pollution problems. Global and domestic trends suggest that freight transportation will become even more important, an emerging leviathan threatening both climate change mitigation and air quality goals across other sectors. Regulators, environmental managers, and decision-makers need to better understand these trends to address problems of emissions, climate change, and energy conservation associated with goods movement. This article considers emerging environmental issues that affect global freight movement and identifies some of the challenges to improve freight mobility and sustainability

Student Perceptions Of Value Added In An Active Learning Experience: Producing, Reviewing And Evaluating A Sales Team Video Presentation

This study investigates the effectiveness of a video team-based activity as a learning experience in a sales management course. Students perceived this learning activity approach as a beneficial and effective instructional technique.  The benefits of making a video in a marketing course reinforce the understanding and the use of the sales process in a creative way. In addition, we found this learning activity helped develop critical thinking by engaging students in creating and developing innovative products and services.  This unique procedure in involving them with hand-on learning activities through a video presentation is professed by students to greatly improve their performance in a sales management course

CT and hemifacial spasm.

Journal ArticleForty-six patients with typical hemifacial spasm had CT. Thirty-eight (83%) were abnormal, including two with surgically documented tumors. Thirty-six had a characteristic dolichoectatic vertebrobasilar artery, with the convexity pointing to the side of the spasm in 92% of the scans. This study suggests that CT is worthwhile procedure in the evaluation of hemifacial spasm and that dolichoectatic vertebrobasilar arteries are very frequently associated with hemifacial spasm

Pseudotumor cerebri and pregnancy.

Journal ArticlePseudotumor cerebri (PTC) is most commonly seen in obese women of reproductive age. We studied 109 women with PTC between ages 16 and 44 years. In 11, PTC started during pregnancy. Thirteen women with previous diagnosis of PTC, including two of the aforementioned 11, had an additional 17 documented pregnancies. Patients were matched by age and parity with controls. Obstetric complications occurred more frequently in the controls. Visual loss occurred with the same frequency in pregnant and nonpregnant patients. Treatment of PTC patients in pregnancy should be the same as for nonpregnant PTC patients, except that calorie restriction and diuretic use are contraindicated. Obstetric management is no different from that of normal pregnancy
