Association between Resistin Levels and All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality: A New Study and a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
CONTEXT: Studies concerning the association between circulating resistin and mortality risk have reported, so far, conflicting results.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between resistin and both all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality risk by 1) analyzing data from the Gargano Heart Study (GHS) prospective design (n=359 patients; 81 and 58 all-cause and CV deaths, respectively); 2) performing meta-analyses of all published studies addressing the above mentioned associations.
DATA SOURCE AND STUDY SELECTION: MEDLINE and Web of Science search of studies reporting hazard ratios (HR) of circulating resistin for all-cause or CV mortality.
DATA EXTRACTION: Performed independently by two investigators, using a standardized data extraction sheet.
DATA SYNTHESIS: In GHS, adjusted HRs per one standard deviation (SD) increment in resistin concentration were 1.28 (95% CI: 1.07-1.54) and 1.32 (95% CI: 1.06-1.64) for all-cause and CV mortality, respectively. The meta-analyses included 7 studies (n=4016; 961 events) for all-cause mortality and 6 studies (n=4,187: 412 events) for CV mortality. Pooled HRs per one SD increment in resistin levels were 1.21 (95% CI: 1.03-1.42, Q-test p for heterogeneity<0.001) and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01-1.10, Q-test p for heterogeneity=0.199) for all-cause and CV mortality, respectively. At meta-regression analyses, study mean age explained 9.9% of all-cause mortality studies heterogeneity. After adjusting for age, HR for all-cause mortality was 1.24 (95% CI: 1.06-1.45).
CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence for an association between circulating resistin and mortality risk among high-risk patients as are those with diabetes and coronary artery disease
An environment to share in-service training on the net: An action-research about charge in primary and middle school
The net was one of the determining factors in a training of a Group of 4 primary and middle school teachers (L. M. in Forni Di Sopra and C. D. F. in Villa Santina, P. C. in Tolmezzo and D. S. in Gemona, all places in the mountains
of Friuli, in the Nord-East of Italy) in an action-research on the electric charge. It was developed through meetings with researchers in physics education and Exchange and sharing of experiences and projects on the net, in an environment designed for teaching activities and under the guidance of a project tutor. The environment allowed to establish different kinds of relations: between teachers, between them and researchers, between classes. It offered to teachers (two in middle school and two in primary school) a place for discussions during the design of paths to be presented to their classes, to structure and share the products of their training both during and after it, to reflect on their training path
Wolf-Rayet Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: the metallicity dependence of the initial mass function
We use a large sample of 174 Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies drawn from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey to study whether and how the slope of the stellar initial
mass function depends on metallicity. We calculate for each object its oxygen
abundance according to which we divide our sample into four metallicity
subsamples. For each subsample, we then measure three quantities: the
equivalent width of \hb emission line, the equivalent width of WR bump around
4650\AA, and the WR bump-to-\hb intensity ratio, and compare to the predictions
of the same quantities by evolutionary synthesis models of Schaerer & Vacca.
Such comparisons lead to a clear dependence of the slope of initial mass
function () on metallicity in that galaxies at higher metallicities
tend to have steeper initial mass functions, with the slope index ranging from
1.00 for the lowest metallicity of to 3.30
for the highest metallicity . We have carefully examined the possible
sources of systematic error either in models or in our observational

Feedback in the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/9): I. High-Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy of Winds from Super Star Clusters
We present high-resolution (R ~ 24,600) near-IR spectroscopy of the youngest
super star clusters (SSCs) in the prototypical starburst merger, the Antennae
Galaxies. These SSCs are young (3-7 Myr old) and massive (10^5 - 10^7 M_sun for
a Kroupa IMF) and their spectra are characterized by broad, extended Br-gamma
emission, so we refer to them as emission-line clusters (ELCs) to distinguish
them from older SSCs. The Brgamma lines of most ELCs have supersonic widths
(60-110 km/s FWHM) and non-Gaussian wings whose velocities exceed the clusters'
escape velocities. This high-velocity unbound gas is flowing out in winds that
are powered by the clusters' massive O and W-R stars over the course of at
least several crossing times. The large sizes of some ELCs relative to those of
older SSCs may be due to expansion caused by these outflows; many of the ELCs
may not survive as bound stellar systems, but rather dissipate rapidly into the
field population. The observed tendency of older ELCs to be more compact than
young ones is consistent with the preferential survival of the most

Acompañamiento a una comunidad Moquoit en el desarrollo de proyectos productivos agroecológicos
The Rural Soil and Water Directorate dates back to the 1970s within Chaco Ministry of Production. This directorate has been working in action, with small and medium-size producers, focused on field work, rural development, sustainability, soil care, appropriate practices and gender and rurality among others. This publication will outline an experience carried out with the Moqoit. The aim of this work was to provide technical assistance to the development of agroecological productive projects carried out by family and community producers from the Moqoit in El Pastoril, Villa Ángela, Chaco. Theoreticalpractical workshops were held related to agroecological production about sodium soil recovery treatments. As a result, it was possible to turn 0.25 ha unused property into a biodiversity community garden with soil recovery. It is not possible to sustain the processes without the local supporters who go along, monitor and strengthen these processes.La Dirección de suelos y agua rural, data sus inicios desde los años 70, como organismo dentro del Ministerio de Producción- Provincia de Chaco. Se ha caracterizado por la intervención en el territorio, sobre todo con pequeños y medianos productores, focalizados en el trabajo a campo, desarrollo rural, sostenibilidad, cuidado de los suelos, prácticas adecuadas, género y ruralidad, entre otros. En esta publicación se presentará la experiencia en el acompañamiento brindado a una comunidad Moqoit. El objetivo del trabajo fue brindar asistencia técnica para el desarrollo de proyectos productivos agro-ecológicos a productores familiares y comunitarios, de la Moqoit de El Pastoril, Villa Ángela, Chaco. Se realizaron talleres teóricos-prácticos vinculados a la producción agroecológica, con tratamientos de recuperación de suelos, de características sódicas. Como resultados, se logró convertir un predio de 0,25 ha sin utilización, en una huerta comunitaria biodiversa, con recuperación de suelo. No es posible sostener los procesos, sin los actores locales que acompañan, monitorean y fortalecen estos procesos
HCG 16 Revisited: Clues About Galaxy Evolution in Groups
We present new spectroscopic observations of 5 galaxies, members of the
unusually active compact group HCG 16, observed using the Palomar 5m telescope.
The high signal to noise ratios (S/N ) of the spectra allow us to
study the variation of the emission line characteristics and the stellar
populations in the nucleus and the circumnuclear regions of the galaxies. The
emission line characteristics of these galaxies are complex, varying between
Seyfert 2 and LINERs or between LINERs and starbursts. All of the galaxies show
traces of intermediate age stellar populations, supporting our previous result
that post-starburst galaxies are common in compact groups. The galaxies
HCG16--4 and HCG16--5 show double nuclei and therefore could be two cases of
recent merger. Our observations support a scenario where HCG 16 was formed by
the successive merger of metal poor, low mass galaxies. The galaxies HCG16--1
and HCG16--2, which are more evolved, form the old core of the group. Galaxies
HCG16--4 and HCG16--5 are two more recent additions still in a merging phase.
Galaxy HCG16--5 is a starburst galaxy which is just beginning to fall into the
core. If HCG 16 is representative of compact groups in their early stage, the
whole set of observations implies that the formation of compact groups is the
result of hierarchical galaxy formation. HCG 16 could be one example of this

Self-generated magnetic flux in YBaCuO grain boundaries
Grain boundaries in YBaCuO superconducting films are
considered as Josephson junctions with a critical current density
alternating along the junction. A self-generated magnetic flux is treated both
analytically and numerically for an almost periodic distribution of .
We obtained a magnetic flux-pattern similar to the one which was recently

Aspergillus bertholletius sp. nov. from Brazil Nuts
During a study on the mycobiota of brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) in Brazil, a new Aspergillus species, A. bertholletius, was found, and is described here. A polyphasic approach was applied using morphological characters, extrolite data as well as partial β-tubulin, calmodulin and ITS sequences to characterize this taxon. A. bertholletius is represented by nineteen isolates from samples of brazil nuts at various stages of production and soil close to Bertholletia excelsa trees. The following extrolites were produced by this species: aflavinin, cyclopiazonic acid, kojic acid, tenuazonic acid and ustilaginoidin C. Phylogenetic analysis using partial β-tubulin and camodulin gene sequences showed that A. bertholletius represents a new phylogenetic clade in Aspergillus section Flavi. Screening for Aphasia in NeuroDegeneration for the Diagnosis of Patients with Primary Progressive Aphasia: Clinical Validity and Psychometric Properties.
BACKGROUND: We evaluated the psychometric proprieties of the Screening for Aphasia in NeuroDegeneration (SAND) battery in Italian primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and movement disorder (MD) patients. METHODS: The sample included 30 consecutive PPA and 45 MD patients who completed the SAND battery together with a clinical interview and a neurological/neuropsychological examination and 130 healthy controls (HC). RESULTS: The SAND battery showed good internal consistency and good convergent and divergent validity. receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed an area under the curve of 0.978 for PPA versus HC and of 0.786 for PPA versus MD. A cutoff ≥3 gave a sensitivity of 0.933% and a specificity of 0.946% for discriminating PPA versus HC, whereas a cutoff ≥5 gave a sensitivity of 0.767% and a specificity of 0.667% for discriminating PPA versus MD. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the SAND battery is an adequate, reliable, and valid diagnostic tool for PPA
The High-Metallicity Explosion Environment of the Relativistic Supernova 2009bb
We investigate the environment of the nearby (d ~ 40Mpc) broad-lined Type Ic
supernova SN 2009bb. This event was observed to produce a relativistic outflow
likely powered by a central accreting compact object. While such a phenomenon
was previously observed only in long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), no LGRB
was detected in association with SN 2009bb. Using an optical spectrum of the SN
2009bb explosion site, we determine a variety of ISM properties for the host
environment, including metallicity, young stellar population age, and star
formation rate. We compare the SN explosion site properties to observations of
LGRB and broad-lined SN Ic host environments on optical emission line ratio
diagnostic diagrams. Based on these analyses, we find that the SN 2009bb
explosion site has a very high metallicity of ~2x solar, in agreement with
other broad-lined SN Ic host environments and at odds with the low-redshift
LGRB host environments and recently proposed maximum metallicity limits for
relativistic explosions. We consider the implications of these findings and the
impact that SN 2009bb's unusual explosive properties and environment have on
our understanding of the key physical ingredient that enables some SNe to
